  • WHAT IS CANCER?Cancer is when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all develop because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.

  • WHAT CAUSES CANCER?Cancer begins with damage (mutations) in DNA.

  • WHO GETS CANCER?Anyone can get cancer !!!

Cancer doesn't discriminate when it comes to race, age or gender.

  • RISK FACTORSFamily History- 10% of cancers are due to an inherited condition. If cancer is common in your family, it's possible that defective genes are being passed from one generation to the next. Age GenderEnvironmental factors- chemical exposure, radiation, occupation, diet, tobacco, pollutants.Cancer is not contagious

  • RISK FACTORS FOR LUNGCANCER Main risk --- smoking ! Causes genetic changes in cells lining the lungs that ultimately lead to the development of cancer.Exposure to second-hand smoke, even huqa and sheesha, all increase the risk of developinglung cancer greatly.

  • SYMPTOMS OF LUNG CANCER No definite symptoms -- with earlystage lung cancer.Symptoms may include: Persistent coughSputum streaked with bloodChest pain without apparent causeVoice changeRecurrent pneumonia or lung infections

  • LUNG CANCER DIAGNOSISTreatable if detected at an early stage. Various tests to help in the diagnosis:Chest x-rayChest CT (computerized tomography) scanBronchoscopy (insertion of a tube into the airways to examine the lining)Sputum cytology (examination of cells in the phlegm)

  • TREATMENT OPTIONS Surgery: to remove cancerous tissue. Chemotherapy: to destroy cancer cells using anti-cancer medications. Radiation: to destroy cancer cells using high energy x-rays.

  • EARLY DETECTION AND PREVENTIONDO NOT SMOKE and/or use tobacco products.Proper management and treatment of any chronic lung diseases one might have.Reduce exposure to chemicals involved in increasing risk, such as asbestos

  • ALTERNATES TO QUIT SMOKING

**Some damage is reversible (eg, on the heart) and some is irreversible (eg, COPD). As lung cancer takes years to develop, it may surface after a smoker has stopped smoking. If lung cancer has not developed by about 11-13 years after quitting, it is unlikely that it will.Quitting smoking brings many rapid benefits, such as reduced levels of carbon monoxide in the blood, reduced risk of heart disease, and, for women who want to have children, healthier pregnancies.Smoking cessation is important because nonsmokers diagnosed with lung cancer have a better prognosis than do those who smoke.

See Section on Quitting for more details.*Smoking is the single most common cause of cancer, and exposure to cancer-causing substances in tobacco products accounts for about 30 percent of cancer deaths in the United States. To reduce your cancer risk, dont smoke or use tobacco products. Avoid smoke-filled rooms if possible.*
