EMBO Courses and Workshops Programme
• Practical Courses– teach young scientists cutting edge techniques– further the transfer of up-to-date knowledge throughout
European laboratories– ~ 10 experts are involved in training up to 20 young scientists– ~ 20 sponsored annually throughout Europe– ~ 9 courses are sponsored internationally
• Travel Grants– open to accepted participants on EMBO Courses– covers long distance travel– maximum 400 Euro is available

• Workshops– bring scientists together who do not normally meet, to
consider a focused topic– encourage the exchange of important recently
discovered results– ~ 120 experts participate in these workshops– ~ 20 sponsored annually throughout Europe– ~ 3 workshops sponsored internationally

• Conference Series– support scientific community building– enables collaborative networks and new contacts to be
established– provides possible sponsorship for 3 meetings to be held
bi-annually over a 6-year period– should alternate with corresponding meetings in the USA– focus on topics of major importance to the European
scientific community

• Joint Activities– Symposia
– Promote interdisciplinary events– Interface between Life Scientists and members of
other disciplines– Co-sponsored with ESF (European Science
Foundation)– ~ 5 meetings per year

• Organizer:– Applications are invited from scientists belonging to
EMBC Member States– Funding is provided up to a maximum of 30.000 Euro– Closing dates for applications:

• Review Procedure:• Evaluated by the EMBO Courses and Workshops
Committee• Consists of 10 EMBO members• Meets twice annually• Organizers notified of the outcome 6 - 8 weeks after
deadline
• Online Helpdesk provides organisers with:• meeting website• related poster• online application system• abstract submission facility• assistance with advertising

EMBO World Activities
• started in 1998• to improve interactions between European and non-
European scientists• to raise the profile of Europe in areas where
interaction is limited• to act as a well recognized entry point into Europe
for non-European scientists
