required to complete certain course requirements. In addition to the audit fee, any course fees will also be charged.

Private lessons and independent studies cannot be audited.

Experimental Courses: Fall 2019

ANTH 330. Linguistic Anthropology. Linguistic anthropology focuses on the relationship between language and culture across time and

cultures. Topics such as translation theory, sociolinguistics, languages and dialects, linguistic nationalism, non-verbal communication,

semiotics, and the politics of language will be covered in the course. Recommended for students interested in working/living in multi-

lingual or cross-cultural contexts. (2 cr.)

ANTH 340. Global Islam. This course will look at Islam through the lens of anthropology, considering Islam as it is practiced in a wide

variety of socio-cultural contexts around the world. Special attention will be paid to Islam in diaspora communities outside majority

Muslim countries, and the resulting questions of inter-religious dialog. Students who are interested in ministry in Muslim contexts, or

Christian-Muslim relations generally, will particularly benefit from this course.

B EC 380. Community Economic Development & Enterprise. This course teaches concepts and frameworks of community economic

development with special focus on the role of private enterprise and its relationship to other key actors, such as non-profit institutions and

government agencies. Students will study ways in which community development practices, entrepreneurship, and business development

can be leveraged to promote economic opportunity in urban neighborhoods. Taught in Wheaton in Chicago only.

COMM 280. Strategic Communication. An overview of public communication with emphasis on how organizations and campaigns

develop strategic goals, choose appropriate communication channels, target audiences, and assess outcomes.

CSCI 210. Computer Programming Principles. A general, gentle introduction to problem-solving to prepare students for computer

programming. Not open to students who have passed CSCI 235 or the equivalent. (2 cr.)

MATH 380. Bayesian Statistics. Students will study advanced statistical methods from a Bayesian perspective. The course will cover all

the fundamental concepts of Bayesian methods, including Bayes Rule, hierarchical models (aka, multilevel models), Markov chain Monte

Carlo methods, and the use of STAN as the modeling algorithm. Methods will be applied to various types of data. Inference and model fit

measures will be discussed.

SCI 200. Introduction to the Health Professions. This course is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the variety of

professions impacting the healthcare environment today. Emphasis is placed upon the skills and attributes needed to effectively prepare

for entry into the professions. Students will explore health care history, health disparities, healthcare delivery, and culture as it relates to

healthcare practice, inter-professional collaboration, and professionalism. Not for students who have taken SCI 229/229L. (2 cr.)

SOC 300. Sociology of Hate. Hate has once again invaded society like a plague. Generations after the Nazi menace, the Cambodian

genocide, and other human atrocities, people are puzzled about the dynamics of hate. From the Charlottesville riots, one can observe that

legal remedies are necessary, but not sufficient, for curtailing the dangers of hate as well as its traumatic consequences. This course probes

the sociology of hate, integrating biblical perspectives in its curriculum. Why do persons and groups hate? What are the social factors that

produce hate? What roles do decisions, leadership, circumstances, and policies have in stimulating hate? Where can we find remedies for

hate? Which alternatives are effective? These and other questions will be pursued in this study. (2 cr.)

SOC 400. The FBI and Policing: Problems and Prospects. Throughout much of its organizational history, the Federal Bureau of

Investigation has been regarded as the premier law enforcement organization in the world. Its mission is to protect the United States from

its enemies, foreign and domestic, internal or external. It investigates crime, publishes data, engages in counter-terrorism operations,

tactical training, criminal profiling or analysis and surveillance activities. Its Behavioral Science Unit has made legendary contributions to

global efforts of policing, forensic science, and intelligence gathering. This course examines the role and impact of the FBI upon policing,

near and far. Moreover, the course scrutinizes current issues facing policing in the 21st century, related to police shootings, use of deadly

force, corruption, and justice.

SPAN 310. Culture and Grammar Review. This course provides an intensive review of grammar structures studied at the Intermediate

level, along with authentic cultural and literary reading selections and films related to the contemporary Spanish-speaking world. The

purpose is to solidify what has been learned previously and to equip students to engage with other content-based courses at the upper

division level. This course is open to any students above the 201 level who wish to continue their studies in Spanish. This course may count

as an elective towards the Spanish major/minor requirements.
