course dates and cost before a booking is made.

Payment can be made by all major debit / credit cards (excluding American Express). We also accept bank

How to find us

Directions from Bodmin/St Austell: Take the A38 through the Glynn Valley passing Trago Mills on the

right hand side. At the Dobwalls roundabout take the first exit for Liskeard and follow the bypass down

the hill heading in the direction of Plymouth.

Do not take the first junction off for Liskeard on the left hand side but instead continue a short distance

and take the next turning on the left signposted for Callington. At the small roundabout adjacent to the

Premier Inn (Liskeard Tavern) take the first exit, arriving at another roundabout opposite Morrisons

supermarket.

Take the third exit and follow the road up the hill heading for Callington. The South West Assessment and

Training (SWAAT) building is almost at the top of the hill on the right-hand side. However, if you reach

Liskeard Hospital you have driven too far!

From Plymouth: Cross Tamar Bridge and at roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A38 Signposted

Liskeard. At next roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A38 Signposted Liskeard A390. At Island Shop

junction branch left, then at roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A390 Signposted Liskeard, Bodmin.

At roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A390 Signposted Tavistock. At roundabout (opposite Morrisons

Supermarket) take the 2nd exit onto the A390 Signposted Callington, Tavistock. The South West

Assessment and Training (SWAAT) building is almost at the top of the hill on the right-hand side. However,

Gas Courses Managed Learning Program (MLP) Gas Diploma

Introduction

An in-depth course designed for new entrants to the gas industry (categories 2 and 3) to meet the core ACS assessment requirements. The Cert-ain Certification Ltd. Gas Diploma has been approved by the Gas Industry Standard Setting Body, Energy and Utility Skills. Individuals holding the Cert-ain Certification Ltd. Gas Diploma are recognised as being eligible to undertake relevant domestic gas assessments for the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS). Course objectives/key benefits On completion delegates will be able to confirm their safety awareness and knowledge in the contents of the course listed and will be able to apply for and sit the core ACS gas assessments, which in turn will enable them to apply for Gas Safe registration. Who is the course aimed at? New entrants with no previous qualifications, but experience of working supervised within the gas industry, to enable them to meet the core ACS assessment requirements. PLEASE NOTE: Candidates wishing to undertake this course must be able to provide evidence that they have been working under supervision within the gas industry, by way of a completed portfolio. The target groups for the Qualification are those learners who are;

• Preparing for employment, new entrants to the occupation.

• Existing personnel in the industry seeking to obtain a qualification to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of gas utilisation.

• Preparing learners for further learning or training and/or developing knowledge and/or skills in a work area of existing personnel seeking to extend their range of work.

Entry requirements/pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for applicants wishing to undertake the Gas Diploma, however, they should possess reasonable levels of English and Mathematics. Applicants will be required to gain and provide evidence of a range of relevant gas work experience under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered installer. This is an intensive course and a large amount of home study will be required to be undertaken. Only upon successful completion of the MPL Gas Diploma course will candidates be able to proceed to undertake the ACS assessment(s) and any add-ons. Assessment

Theory assessments are paper-based examinations taken throughout the learning programme, and course delegates will also need to complete a practical tasks portfolio. Further details of the requirements of the portfolio can be found in the MPL Gas Diploma Qualification Handbook.

Course Outcome/Qualification

Upon successful completion candidates will be able to undertake the relevant ACS gas assessment(s).

Fast-track Gas Course

Introduction

An in-depth course designed for both experienced gas engineers whose qualifications have lapsed to meet the core ACS assessment requirements. PLEASE NOTE: New entrants to the gas industry who hold an NVQ Level 3 in plumbing (or equivalent) must undertake the Managed Learning Program (MLP) gas course. Course objectives/key benefits On completion delegates will be able to demonstrate their safety awareness and competency in the contents of the course listed below in natural gas. Delegates will also be eligible to undertake the ACS assessments following this course PLEASE NOTE: This course can also be undertaken by anyone wishing to work solely with LPG. Please contact our office on 01579 348544 for further details. Who is the course aimed at? Those who have previously held ACS qualifications which are no longer current. New entrants to the gas industry must undertake the Managed Learning Programme (MLP) Gas course for new entrants. Entry requirements/pre-requisites In order to undertake the course candidates will need to provide evidence of previous ACS assessments and/or CORGI or GAS SAFE registration (which are no longer current). Domestic Natural Gas Initial Assessment for New Entrants (CCN1) Introduction A pre-requisite assessment for all other appliance assessments and covers all aspects of gas safety and legislation. Course objectives/key benefits Upon successful completion of the assessment candidates will be able to undertake work on domestic natural gas installations, and on appliances, depending upon the appropriate assessments being successfully undertaken. Who is the course aimed at? Anyone who intends to work on domestic natural gas installations. For those wishing to work solely on LPG installations we also offer a core LPG gas assessment. Entry requirements/pre-requisites Candidates will need to have either successfully completed the Managed Learning Programme Gas course for new entrants or Fast Track Gas course, or be able to provide sufficient evidence that they have the required skills and knowledge enabling them to undertake this assessment (i.e. be experienced to Category 1). Course content Assessment of candidate's knowledge, understanding and skills relating to the work they wish to undertake on domestic natural gas installations/appliances. Packages including add-ons are available. Add-ons for domestic natural gas available are;

• CENWAT1 - Domestic Natural Gas Central Heating Boilers and Domestic Natural Gas Water Heaters (Please note: This qualification replaces both the old CEN1 and WAT1 qualifications)

• CKR1 - Domestic Natural Gas Cookers (this also includes hobs and 'Rangemaster' type flueless cooking appliances)

• HTR1- Domestic Natural Gas Fires

• MET2 - Domestic Natural Gas Meters (up to 6m3/hr.)

• HWB1 - Swimming Pool Boilers (Please note: this only qualifies the operative to work on natural gas versions of these appliances. If LPG versions are to be commissioned, serviced or safety checked then a changeover - CONGLP1 or a CCLP1 qualification is required)

• DAH1 - Domestic Natural Gas Warm Air Heaters

Course duration One week should be sufficient to complete this assessment. However, this is dependent on the number of add-ons undertaken. Training Method This is not a training course (assessment only). Anyone requiring training needs to consider undertaking the Managed Learning Programme Gas course for new entrants or the Fast Track Gas course as required. Assessment Practical assessment and multiple-choice question papers. Course Outcome/Qualification Candidates who successfully complete the assessment(s) will be certificated under the ACS scheme for the appropriate installations/appliances for which they have been assessed and will then be able to apply for Gas Safe Registration. Materials Required It is an open book assessment and it is therefore highly recommended that candidates undertaking it have an up-to-date gas publication. Domestic Natural Gas Individual Appliance Training and Assessments (add-ons) Introduction Training and assessments for individual domestic natural gas appliances, for anyone wishing to 'add on' to their existing domestic gas qualifications. Course objectives/key benefits Upon successful completion of the assessment candidates will be able to undertake work on the domestic natural gas appliances, to which the appropriate assessments successfully undertaken apply. Who is the course aimed at? Any existing GAS SAFE registered gas operatives who intend to work on domestic natural gas installations. Entry requirements/pre-requisites Candidates will need to have either successfully completed the Domestic Natural Gas Core Assessment (CCN1) or be able to provide sufficient evidence that they have passed this assessment at another college or assessment centre. It is also a requirement that candidates MUST undertake training before carrying out the assessment, as per Guidance Note 8. This training (per appliance) is provided prior to assessment. ACOPs Gas Course Introduction This course provides anyone involved in the design or construction of domestic and non-domestic buildings, or anyone who may work with natural or liquid petroleum gas, information regarding their obligations under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, as well as other relevant legislation. Part B, 8(1) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 specifically states "No person shall make any alteration to any premises in which a gas fitting or gas storage vessel is fitted if that alteration would adversely affect the safety of the fitting or vessel in such a manner that, if the fitting or the vessel had been installed after the alteration, there would have been a contravention of, or failure to comply with, these Regulations." This basically means that anyone who, whilst working at a property, affects the gas safety in any way (whether it concerns the pipework, ventilation provisions, flue etc.) could be deemed to be in contravention of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and thus find themselves having legal action carried out against them. This course aims to prevent that from happening by making delegates fully aware of their obligations and requirements. PLEASE NOTE: This course can be undertaken 'on-site' at the delegates' premises. Course objectives/key benefits Provide knowledge and understanding of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, relevant Building Regulations and other legislation affecting gas safety during work carried out at premises. Who is the course aimed at? Insulation installers, Heating Engineers, Specifiers, Architects, Designers, Construction Engineers, Construction Supervisors, Building Control Officers, Kitchen Fitters, Carpet Fitters, Factory Workers, Builders and anyone else who is indirectly working with or around gas supplies. Entry requirements/pre-requisites There are no entry or pre-requisite requirements to undertaking this course. Course content

Course Outcome/Qualification Candidates who successfully complete the assessment will receive a SWAAT Certificate in Gas Safety Awareness. South West Assessment and Training also offer an alternative certificated version of this course; the QCF Level 2 Award in Gas Safety Awareness in Residential Premises (including Social Housing). It gives a detailed understanding of the role of a Gas Auditor and best practice procedures, as required by Gas Managers. Those working within the gas industry have a great responsibility to ensure that individuals are not affected by the work activities undertaken by any company or organisation. One of the main aspects of ensuring these properties are safe is by confirming that gas appliances have been installed and serviced correctly by employing Quality Control Auditing processes. There is also a need for the Social Housing Landlord to ensure they comply with legislation, in particular the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998 and the Health and Safety at Work Act. Introduction

A pre-requisite assessment for all other LPG appliance assessments and covers all aspects of gas safety

and legislation.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the same qualification required for anyone 're-assessing' their existing LPG CCLP1

qualification.

Anyone who has a core gas safety qualification in Natural Gas (i.e. CCN1, CCCN1, or ) are able to undertake

a changeover qualification - CONGLP1.

Introduction

This is the assessment for converting natural gas qualifications to LPG and is a pre-requisite assessment

for all other LPG appliance assessments, without holding an existing LPG core qualification.

The qualification is required if candidates wish to undertake work within the LPG sector within domestic

properties and residential park homes (defined as log cabins or chalets).

If the candidate wishes to work on mobile homes (static caravans) or touring caravans they will need to

undertake this Natural Gas to LPG conversion plus the Leisure Accommodation Vehicles (LAV) assessment.

Assessments for individual LPG gas appliances, for anyone wishing to 'add on' to their existing LPG

qualifications.


Upon successful completion of the assessment candidates will be able to undertake work on the LPG

Any existing GAS SAFE registered gas operatives who intend to work on LPG installations.


Candidates will need to have either successfully completed the Domestic Natural Gas Core Assessment

(CCN1) or Commercial/Industrial Core Assessment (CCCN1) or be able to provide sufficient evidence that

they have passed this assessment at another college or assessment centre.

electro fusion jointing, sizing external above and below ground pipework.

Where multiple gas supplies are to single dwellings and installation volume and pipe size is within scope

of BS 6891 tests for tightness within BS 6891 may be applied. Operatives involved in installing gas supplies

above scope of volumes/pipe sizes within BS 6891 will, in addition, need the TPCP1 qualification.

Part P electrical training course

Introduction

This training and assessment course covers the requirements of domestic electrical installation to

provide students with a sufficient level of competence, so that once registered with a relevant body,

they will be able to work safely, efficiently and legally on electrical equipment.

Under current building regulations, most electrical work carried out in houses must, by law, be notified

to the local authority building control. The exception to this is where the work is undertaken by a

competent person who is a member of a Governing Body and is registered onto a Part P scheme.

The scheme requires that any members can prove competency and, upon registering onto a scheme,

candidates will be assessed by the Governing Body they choose.

To register onto a Part P scheme candidates are required to have knowledge of domestic installation

and a relevant qualification which determines that they are competent and able to safely work on

electrical equipment in the home. Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification schemes will be

qualified contractors with the ability to thoroughly check relevant electrical circuits for safety.

They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulations

requirements when the work has been completed. In order for candidates to reach their full potential

Introduction

Under general health and safety law it is a legal requirement of employers and persons in charge of

buildings to consider the risks from legionella. This applies equally to schools, hotels, hospitals, local

authorities and private landlords - in fact anyone deemed to be the dutyholder of a premises.

Legionnaire's Disease is caused by inhaling small droplets of water suspended in the air and is typical in

areas where water is maintained at a temperature high enough to encourage growth such as cooling

towers, spa pools and hot water systems used in both commercial and domestic properties.

This course has been designed to meet the training requirements of the revised Approved Code of Practice

(ACOP) 'L8' and guidance for Legionnaires disease.

EAL Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

Introduction

As the Green Construction Site Operative (CSO) Card is no longer issued by Construction Skills Certificate

Scheme (CSCS), this course covers the requirements for its replacement, the Green Labourer Card.


This qualification covers the knowledge of the principles of risk assessments, the importance of safe

manual handling, working safely at height, the risks to health within a construction environment and the

NEBOSH National General Certificate Training

Introduction

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) is a globally recognised

health, safety awarding body.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NGC) is accredited at Level 3

within the National Qualifications Framework and is the most widely held health and safety qualification

in the UK

The NGC is This course is for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need to

broad understanding of health and safety issues.




This is a course designed to provide the relevant knowledge required in order to undertake the respective

NEBOSH National General Certificate examinations.


The NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety training course is aimed at staff

personnel, for example: Managers Supervisors Non-safety specialists and staff with health and safety

responsibilities and who need a grounding and recognised qualification in occupational safety and health.

Each delegate is required to sit two unit written exams during the NEBOSH General Certificate in

Occupational Health and Safety assessment and submit a hand written practical assignment.

This paperwork is explained during the course by the tutor. It is the delegate’s responsibility to submit

their assessment within the given timescale. Any assessments not returned by the deadline will result in

the delegate failing the course.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a training course to prepare the candidate for the examinations. These

examinations can be undertaken in Bristol.

Asbestos poses a serious threat to health. It is estimated that up to 500,000 non-domestic buildings in the

UK contain some form of asbestos and up to 4,000 people die each year as a result of asbestos exposure.

Manual handling training course

Introduction

A one day course providing an overview of the relevant legislation and issues, followed by a practical

checklist approach for risk assessments which can be applied in most working environments.


If you or your staff are undertaking potentially hazardous manual handling activities, then it is a legal

requirement under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations to ensure that effective training is

provided.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, more than 20% of the accidents reported each year are

Abrasive Wheels and their safe use

Introduction

This course is designed to help the individual understand their responsibilities within the workplace and

is aimed at persons working with Abrasive Wheels.

It is a legal requirement under The Provision and use of Work Equipment 1998 (PUWER) that all staff who

use abrasive wheels receive abrasive wheels training in the safe use of the tools and changing of wheels.




The aim of the course is to provide training to comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act and the

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Anyone who attends the course should be able to safely select and use abrasive cutting and grinding

wheels upon successful completion.




Anyone who uses, are likely to use, or manages anyone who uses abrasive wheels (cutters, grinders etc.)

but who have limited or no knowledge of the safety requirements or their legal obligations.

SWAAT Fire Warden training course

Introduction

This course provides delegates with an understanding of what causes fires to occur, how to prevent a fire

from happening, what their responsibilities are as a Fire Warden, and what to do in the event of a fire. It

will also enable delegates to undertake an efficient and orderly evacuation of their building in an

emergency situation.

Introduction

This course provides anyone involved in work at height, the relevant information regarding their

obligations under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, as well as other associated legislation.

Employers and duty holders have a duty to protect anyone who might be exposed to these risks by

ensuring that any form of work at height is planned, supervised and carried out safely.

It is equally suitable to anyone involved in the supervision or management of anyone who carries out work

at height, or who simply wants to know more about the Regulations, as well as those actually carrying out

the work.

Other courses EAL Assessor's Award (TAQA)

Introduction

The EAL TAQA (formerly A1) Assessors Award enables delegates to formulate assessment plans, make

judgements against performance criteria, give feedback to candidates and contribute to the internal

verification system within their own subject area.

This qualification is a pre-requisite to the Verifier (IQA) award.




To provide the required knowledge and understanding to successfully carry out unbiased and fair

assessments of competence.


This course is for any competent practitioner of practical based subjects who wishes to obtain the

relevant, current, up to date qualification, which enables them to make judgements against evidence

presented to them for assessment against subject performance criteria


Candidates should hold a level 3 qualification in their specialist subject and have been a competent

practitioner for a minimum of 3 years.

In addition, they must have been practicing within the last 2 years.

Verifier Award (IQA)

Introduction

The IQA verifier award is a single QCF unit which replaces the previous D34/v1 qualifications.

The revised standards are designed to reflect the requirements of Internal Verifiers in all occupational

sectors and are the benchmark of good practice in the Internal Verification of QCF qualifications.




V1 is a nationally recognised and widely used competence based programme that enables individuals to

conduct internal quality assurance checks of the assessment process.

This unit also contributes towards a QCF Level 3 and Level 4 in Learning and Development.

Candidates should hold a recognised and current Assessors Award (TAQA) qualification.
