COURSE DESCRIPTION

The overall aim of the course is to teach the fundamental mechanisms underlying aggregation

and propagation of -synuclein and tau protein in neurodegenerative movement disorders.

Ongoing efforts for the development of therapeutic strategies targeting these two proteins will

also be discussed. The course consists of seven virtual lectures given by international experts in

the field, followed by an interactive Q&A session to answer the questions of the participants.

The course will close with an interactive panel discussion including all experts to address the

critical next steps to move the field forward.

The course is part of a broader effort of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder

Society to engage young neurologists and neuroscientists into research on movement disorders

and promote translational research involving multidisciplinary approaches.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to:

Describe the prototypical neuropathological lesions observed in synucleinopathies and

tauopathies

Recognize the complex mechanisms underlying pathological aggregation of -synuclein

and tau protein

Debate the putative role of distinct -synuclein and tau species/strains for disease

phenotypes and progression

Discuss ongoing efforts towards the development of therapies targeting -synuclein or

tau protein

EDUCATION DISCLAIMER

The primary purpose of MDS programming is to provide educational opportunities that enhance patient

care. Information presented, as well as publications, technologies, products and/or services discussed are

intended to inform attendees about the knowledge, techniques and experiences of physicians who are

willing to share such information with colleagues. A diversity of opinions exists in the medical field, and

the views of the workshop’s faculty are offered solely for educational purposes. Faculty members’ views

do not represent those of the MDS and do not constitute endorsement by MDS.

RECORDINGS PROHIBITED

Audio and videotaping are not allowed during the course. Photography of the presentations and slides is

not allowed during the activity.

COURSE EVALUATIONS

Course evaluations are available online. Please take time to complete the online evaluation form provided

following this course. Your input and comments are essential in planning future educational programs.
