What will you learn?A choice of 3 trades from the 5 traditional construction skills on offer.

Plumbing:

Introducing rain water skills – The learner is required to install guttering and downpipe to drawing.The learner will produce a variety of jigs to drawing specifications. The construction of these jigs will employ pipe bending techniques and various jointing methods to include;

15 and 22mm Copper tube.15 and 22mm Compression and Soldered joints.15mm Push Fit tubing and fittings.32 and 40 mm Push Fit Waste pipe and fittings.

Utilising the jointing and bending skills developed the learner will;

Fit a wash hand basin and toilet including hot, cold water and waste fittings.Plumb in a sink unit with hot and cold water and waste.Remove and re-fit a central heating radiator.Further learning will include Tap washer replacement, re-seating and ball valve maintenance.

Tiling:

You will learn to plan the installation avoiding waste and to achieve a professional appearance to your work.Prepare area to be tiled.Correct application of adhesives.Cut where appropriate and apply wall to predetermined plan.Lay floor tiles and cut out for waste pipe etc.Learn correct grouting techniques and polish to a professional finish.

Plastering:

You will begin by learning the necessary trowel skills to enable you to;

Apply a render scratch coat to a block wall.Install roughing beads to external corners and windows.Install drip beads / Bell cast beads.Apply second render coat.Fine down render coat to professional finish.Learn to mix plaster to appropriate consistency.Apply plaster to plasterboard / pre-plastered and rendered walls to attain a professional finish.Apply plaster to ceiling to a polished professional finish.

Brickwork:

You will learn the necessary trowel skills to enable you to lay;

You will build walls using various bonds and correctly install;

Damp proof membrane (DPC)Cavity ties and insulation.Air bricks.Concrete and steel lintels.

Painting & Decorating:

Course will begin with the learner preparing a room for decoration i.e;

Removal of all existing decoration.Repairing and filling damaged walls and ceilings.Preparation of woodwork.Application of oil based undercoats and gloss finish to all woodwork.Apply emulsion to walls and ceilings, employing correct method for cutting in.Hanging of lining papers.Hanging of pattered wallpapers.Painting technique for 6 panel door and window frames.

Carpentry

You will learn the correct use of carpentry tools and marking out methods to produce;

Internal and external Mitring of skirting board.Internal scribing for skirting board.Produce models using a variety of jointing methods.Installation of door lining.Hanging a 6 panel door including installation of furniture.

This is a City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma course which provides training to City & Guilds Certificate level in 3 different skills of the trainees choice.
