The KYP DifferenceA KYP education is centred upon the real-world skill your child needs most to succeed: flawless spoken and written communication in English.

KYP knows that the single most important skill your child can learn is to communicate effectively. We focus on critical thinking, writing, and confident public speak-ing. We teach these skills through a global curriculum.

Our founderKELLY YANG is the New York Times best-selling, award-winning author of FRONT DESK and winner of the 2018 Asian Pacific American Award for Literature. Kelly uses her experience in the publishing industry to ensure KYP’s curriculum and teaching methods for writing are cutting-edge.

Kelly immigrated to America when she was 6 years old and grew up in Southern Califor-nia. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law School, having entered college at the age of 13 and Harvard Law School at the age of 17. In 2005, at the age of 20, Kelly became one of the youngest graduates of Harvard Law School.

After law school, she gave up law to pursue her passion for writing and for teaching to write. In 2005, Kelly founded The Kelly Yang Project to help students in Asia find their voice and become better writers and more powerful speakers. As an award-winning au-thor, she’s designed the KYP curriculum to instill a passion for writing in children from a very early age.

“Effective English communication is the number one most essential skill for global academic and professional success. Wheth-er your kids are going to grow up tto be au-thors, lawyers, or businessmen, that ability is KEY in today’s world.”

10-11 years oldIntermediate Creative Writing Intermediate-level students are trained to be independent story writers. They will be challenged to complete an 800-1200-word original short story in class every two weeks. Introductory Critical Writing Students develop their critical reasoning ability and academic writing abilities, preparing them for secondary school writing and higher-level coursework. Introductory Global Thinking In this course, students are taught to think, speak and write from a global perspective. We tackle the tough social and cultural issues in modern society through intensive, interactive class dis-cussions. We ask students to write, present, and debate about a wide variety of topics. In Glob-al Thinking, students learn how to analyse the crucial elements that drive the pace of current events, and how to speak and write about those elements with confidence and clarity. Classes will rotate between writing, debating, and public speaking lessons which combine these skills. Introductory Debate Why debating? Debate is the fastest-growing ECA globally because of its ability to transform young people into global people. It merges five essential skills: public speaking, critical thinking, logical analysis, world issue awareness, and personal organisation. This is an excellent class for beginner debaters who either want to pursue debate seriously in secondary school or those who are curious about debate.

12-13 years oldIntensive Young Authors Workshop Students will deconstruct plots, hone their writing skills and learn literary techniques that will take their work from proficient to publishable. Students will workshop their writing and learn skills, devices, and secrets of professional authors to take their writing to the next level. Students will also learn how to analyse literature. Intermediate Critical Writing Students will perfect written analysis and argumentation to the level demanded by elite second-ary schools and university admissions tests by writing one planned and polished thesis-based essay on a current events topic each week.

Intermediate Global Thinking This course teaches students to think, speak, and write from a global perspective. We tackle more difficult social and cultural issues in modern society through intensive, interactive class discussions on a wide variety of challenging topics taken straight from the week’s news head-lines. Students learn how to analyse the crucial elements that drive the pace of current events and how to speak and write about those elements with confidence and clarity. Students will also learn how to debate in the World Schools-style and cover the basics of Model United Nations procedure.

Advanced Global Thinking Advanced Global Thinking is taught in the “Harvard Law School style” — in small seminars led by an experienced practitioner. Using KYP’s award-winning method for teaching, Advanced Global Thinking students tackle the tough social and cultural issues in modern society through intensive, interactive class discussions. Students learn to listen, speak, and write powerfully and pre-cisely on a wide variety of topics, such as immigration reform, humanitarian efforts, and diplomacy. Model United Nations (open to students 12-13 by assessment) MUN students simulate the United Nations and UN committees. They learn about current events and foreign policy, and perfect research, public speaking, debate, and writing skills as well as team-work, leadership, and negotiation. Students in this class will train to compete in overseas compe-titions in Greater China and East Asia. 2. I agree that my child will not miss class except in case of emergency or illness. If my child will miss class for other reasons, I will notify KYP at least 2 hours before the start of the class. Failure to provide prior notification will forfeit the option for a make-up class.

3. I agree to schedule a make-up class to take place within two weeks from the absence date and agree to KYP’s policy that disallows any makeup classes after these two weeks. Make-up class requests must be received at least 24 hours in advance of the intended make-up class. I understand that arranging make-up classes is solely my responsibility.

4. I agree to the maximum of 3 make-up classes during the Fall Term (August to December) and the maximum of 5 make-up classes during the Spring Term (January to June). I acknowl-edge that make-up maximums cannot be carried into future terms and do not apply to hol-iday courses (i.e. Christmas, Summer). I agree to settle an admin fee of $100/per lesson to schedule make-up lessons in excess of these maximums.

5. I accept KYP policies on cancellation due to weather and civil unrest: no make-up lessons will be provided for cancelled lessons due to typhoons or other adverse weather; make-up lessons for cancellations due to civil unrest will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

6. I agree to allow my child to be photographed, videoed, and/or recorded in class while per-forming academic exercises, presenting speeches, reciting and performing creative writing, and solving creative problems. I give KYP license to use these images, recordings, and my child’s work to promote and enhance creative and critical thinking in KYP publications such as the course catalogue and the KYP website.

7. I agree to give at least 2 weeks’ notice if my child would like to switch their class to an-other time slot. I understand that the first time change is free, while subsequent changes are subject to $100/change.

8. I agree to give KYP at least 1-month’s (4-lessons’) notice in writing if my child would like to withdraw from his/her regular class or else to leave the remaining class payment in lieu of this notice. Failure to provide 30-days’ notice will forfeit the $500 deposit.

9. KYP will charge a $500 deposit upon registration. Parents may leave this deposit with KYP if they discontinue their course temporarily. However, the deposit will be forfeited after six months of inactive attendance. It is the responsibility of the parent to re-claim the de-posit during this time.

10. I agree with KYP’s invoice policy to settle the tuition on two months basis.
