MESSAGE FROM LINDSAY WALZFounder/Executive Director

Over the last two years, courageous heARTS has created a unique space for self-care and healing, inspiring young and old alike with a mission that speaks straight to the heart. We've shown what can happen when young people are offered the opportunity to be co-creators of their spaces. We've created meaningful opportunities for young people to express themselves through art, both individually and collectively. We've built a community of young artists that support each other's growth, encourage exploration, challenge the status quo, and are already making positive changes in their community.

These past two years have been some of the proudest of my life. courageous heARTS is the culmination of a lifetime of dreaming. I have been envisioning this space since I was 16 years old-- the dream grew as I grew. Now it's real-- but the dreaming hasn't ended. There is so much possibility held within our walls and I am eager to see what 2015 will bring!

You are one of our co-creators, because without you none of this work would be possible. Your support of the young hearts we serve is what made this dream come true.

PROJECT RestARTheARTS partnered with the Anishinabe Academy / Anne Sullivan dual school campus in the fall to offer a pilot session of Project RestART to 12 middle school students from the American Indian and Somali/East African cultural communities. During this 8-week session, students created individual and collective artwork and used the Circle process to build cross-cultural understanding and strengthen inter-school relationships.

WHY WE FIGHT

Our Youth Advisory Board completed a public art project entitled “Why Fight?” for the City of Minneapolis’ Blueprint to Prevent Youth Violence.

• Open 45 weeks during the year, offering free arts classes for youth ages 10-18. [Over 75 youth served, 15 different topics + open studio time]• Community Reflection Circle held for volunteers of all ages on a monthly basis.• Held 3 all-ages events throughout the year.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTcourageous heARTS partnered with a variety of

community organizations in 2014.

At the heARTS Center:-For the Love of heART (March 1, 2014) - A Family art making day for Valentine’s Day that book ended a Socail media campaign that highlighted the imporatance of art.

-The First Annual Bake Sale (August 23-24, 2014): The Youth advisory board’s fundraising strategy for the year

-Second Annual Gifts from the heART (November 30, 2014): Gift making day for youth in grades k-4 - stategy to engage younger youth - we offer several projects for them to make for their loved ones. We had two sessions and served 16 kids.

-Community Reflection Circle Over the Summer had 6 circles, then began a monthly schedule beginning in the fall that has now become a part of our organizational culture. It strengthens our community and build ou

In the Community:-Flint Hills Children’s Festival (May 28, 2014) - Served as an educational parnter for a school field trip day during the week. 150 kids participated in and Exquisite Corpse project.

-Roosevelt High School (May 28, 2014)- The Youth Advisory Board helped facilitate collage making at "Celebrate the Arts.”

-Northrup Run (May 31, 2014) - Served as a comunity partner and did face painting and guided drawing.

YOUTH ADVISORY BOARDBefore there was art-making at heARTS, there was a Youth Advisory Board (YAB). heARTS’ prides itself in being one of few Twin Cities spaces truly driven by youth. Our YAB, consisting of Minneapolis high school students, meets bi-monthly to make decisions about programs, evaluation and day-to-day operations.
