Getting Ready for Dickson, Tennessee For the past 10 years, one of the highlights of my year has been the annual sojourn to the Ercoupe Owners Club’s Fred & Dorothy Weick Annual Fly-In. With a combination of sheer luck and perhaps flying in questionable weather, I’ve managed to fly to all of them! I’ve had the fun of hosting three of them, but I must say it’s really fun when someone else is doing the work! Each fly-in has given attendees a taste of the local environment around the convention airport. Whether it’s cheese curds in Wisconsin, oddly-made ice cream in Nebraska, folk music in Arkansas, throwed rolls in Missouri, it gives us a chance not only to gather and share experiences and kick tires, but to see some parts of the country we otherwise might not. This year promises to be a memorable one. Dickson, Tennessee, lies about 40 miles west of Nashville, the country music capital of the world. And whether you are a country music fan or not, it’s a part of these United States that are well worth visiting! So what can we expect from a fly-in in the heart of Tennessee? The official lodging is a state park a few miles from the airport. The banquet will be there, too. It has beautiful views of the woods and is a restful place. But if you want to stay somewhere else, there are lots of options in Dickson! We have special pricing on our trip into Nashville on Friday night to see the Grand Old Opry at the Gaylord theater. It looks expensive, but this, folks, is the major leagues when it comes to country music! If we can get downtown before the show, I’d love to eat at the Wildhorse Saloon! We’re going to have the usual EOC stuff – technical seminar, member meeting, board meeting, tire kicking, story telling, problem solving, and so on. And there is a fly- out to Tullahoma to visit the Beechcraft History Museum. The banquet promises to be a lot of fun, as usual, with a guest speaker I think you’ll enjoy. Many of you know of his exploits, and were briefly introduced to him on the 75 th Anniversary DVD. Let’s say we’ll be racing to hear himPlease register as early as possible! It’s important for us to get a handle on numbers for ordering items and scheduling facilities. Some folks are working hard to put this convention together and you can give us a hand by letting us know as early as possible that you’re coming! See you in Dickson! March 2017 Coupe Capers 2

By Larry Snyder Coupe Capers Editor and Executive Director

It’s March! That means spring is almost here. The weather here in Arkansas has been unseasonably warm, but the winds and clouds have made flying difficult

I want to apologize to the membership for my lack of speed working on club issues. As I wrote a while back, we had a house fire at the end of October last year. The fire caused tremendous smoke and water damage to the house. ServPro came in and took away everything we own so the house could be empty for restoration and repair. I tried to take out all club related things and was largely successful, but I ended up storing some in my hangar, which is 30 miles away from the house, and some in my shop. Getting to stuff became a bit of a challenge, and remembering where it was became a big issue.

Last week marked the beginning of the end of our fire story, however it created even more stress for us. ServPro brought back our earthly belongings – furniture and more than 300 boxes! I had to do some construction my wife wanted and was not covered by insurance and it was critical it be completed before the mountain of boxes arrived.

We are still unpacking boxes, and will be doing that for the next two weeks or so. I am also building a new office just for the EOC, and once that is done I’ll be on top of it!

By the way, my Vonage phone has been in storage for all of this, so the best way to get to me is email!

Club Goings-On

Ever wish your spouse or child could be an EOC member but didn’t think it made sense to pay another $35 or $30 just to get an unneeded second copy of the newsletter? Now we have a family add-on membership that lets you sign up your spouse or child with the same mailing address for a mere $5. Now is a great time to do that, since non-members have to pay $10 more for registration for the national convention. Save $5!

Where Is Everybody?

Wow, this winter has been desolate from a Coupe Capers viewpoint! Where is everybody? I was so pleased we had a great run of contributions to the newsletter in 2016, but the past few months have been a little meager. Please tell us your stories! It doesn’t have to be War & Peace, just a

story in your own words of what you’ve been doing.

Navworx and the FAA

Rumor has it that Navworx is approaching an agreement with the FAA on certifying their low-cost ADS-B out solution. You may remember that folks were shocked a couple of months ago when the FAA suddenly pulled their approval of the unit because Navworx would not allow FAA inspectors to review their facilities.

Verses from Vernon (Gregory) We received this note from Vernon Gregory last January and are just getting around to printing it (sorry). The EOC is absolutely thrilled that Vernon has taken the Skyport inventory and name. For many of us Ercoupers, the world is not complete without a Skyport!

Vernon has personally helped me through a lot of problems as my Ercoupe underwent some extensive restoration. I think I’ve bought some 3 or 4 ailerons

from him. Don’t ask.

Anyway, here is what Vernon wrote:

Skyport had Great December. Thanks to all our members for their orders and support. We are averaging 95% ship rate. We have moved 100% of new parts and maybe 50% used. Kurt and Mike have rolled out the red carpet every trip up providing lots of help loading and answering questions I would like to thank them.

So Where Do You Like to Eat? Let’s face it, many of us live to fly and fly to eat! Yes, the $100 dollar hamburger is just the start – pilots know where all the great places are within about 200 miles of your home base.

How about starting a list of places worth flying to?

I’m going to start out with my list of favorites.

1. Lambert’s Café, Sikeston, Missouri (KSIK). When you announce you’re landing at Sikeston, most times the FBO will ask if you’re going to Lambert’s. If you want, he’ll call them and van will be there to take you there. homemade food, always crowded, but pilots get to go in the exit and get the next table! They only take cash or check, no cards.

And they throw the rolls at you!

2. Gus’s World Famous Spicy Fried Chicken, Memphis, Dewitt Spain (M01). You can take the crew car from this airport right on the Mississippi and get some great chicken. It’s only a 5-minute drive from the airport.

3. Arthur Bryant’s BBQ, Kansas City Downtown (KMKC). The tower folks are great and a GA terminal and cheap self-serve fuel are on the west side of the airport. Atlantic may loan you a courtesy car, but if not, a Uber ride is about $12. Best KC BBQ!

Now I’m waiting to hear from you! I’ll have more next month.

Tug on This – Reactions to Towing an Ercoupe Last month we published a story about severe damage inflicted on an Ercoupe by being oversteered with a powered tug. This was a warning to all Coupers – many line people simply do not know about the limitations on the nose wheel, and think that all airplanes work like Cessnas – the nose wheel can be severely oversteered without damage. When Mooney and Ercoupe owners see a tug coming our way, we break into a sweat! We received these responses – editor.

Excellent article on Tug Towing. One of the big reasons of owning an Ercoupe is because they are so light and easy to tow by hand. On tarmac IF the tires are at the proper pressures, they can be handled by a small woman.

General rule - power tow in a fairly straight line. No sharp turning allowed.

I sure wish common sense was more common.

Cheers John Phillips 415C sn 4375

I read Larry Snyder’s article about tug towing and thought it was pretty good. I thought I would add my two bits. Prior to coming to Univair, I was a ramp rat (lineman) at Denver Beechcraft and towed a lot of aircraft, both big and little. I got pretty salty at stacking a hanger and prided myself at being able to put an airplane exactly where I wanted it.

Some aircraft like the Learjet, you can spin the nose wheel completely around. The Mooney M-20 series has very tight turning limits. All of your smaller Beechcraft models like the Bonanza and Baron series had tow pins that would shear if the turn limits were exceeded. Most every aircraft with turning limits has red vertical lines painted on the nose gear strut. More often these lines would be on the steering collar which would be the most likely damaged or broken item if turning limits were exceeded.

Since linemen tow a bunch of aircraft, they are used to seeing these painted turn limits. Generally the absence of these marked tow limits is an indication that there is no limitation in how far you can turn the airplane left or right.

In my two years of towing aircraft, I never towed an Ercoupe. They mostly would avoid the Class B airspace and attendant landing fees at the old Denver Stapleton

Airport. I fueled a couple of them, but that was about it.

Even if you fly into an airport in Podunk, Kansas. Good FBOs will try to get your aircraft inside if they have hangar space and a nasty storm is brewing out to the west. Even these good intentioned people could screw up your nose gear.

It might be worth your while to move the wheel to the limits of its turning and mark some red vertical line about ¼” wide and about 1 to 1 ½” long. This little item could save you a big headache and some money down the road.

Michael D. Sellers Assistant to the President Univair Aircraft Corporation Aurora, Colorado 888-433-5433 303-375-8882 (International)

Keeping Your Engine Fair and Balanced By Fred Beem

I own Ercoupe N94423, which I just bought last March. There are a lot of things that I have found wrong with it, which is normal, I guess, when it hasn’t been flown much in the last 10 years. But anyhow there seemed to be an extra amount of vibration from the engine when I was flying. So I pulled the prop and checked it for balance and it was fine. I got to looking in Trade-A-Plane and I found an ad from Balance Masters indicating they had a balancer they made for Lycoming and Rotax engines. So I called them about putting one on my C85, they said that they did not have one to fit it but they had an 8-inch flat prop balancer.

This a unit that is a flat plate 8 inch in diameter with tubing around the outer edge filled with mercury and some kind of oil, I think, with a hole in the middle. I bought one, then I

had the holes put in the plate to match the flange and installed it behind the spinner plate, put the prop and spinner back on. When I ran the engine I did notice a lot of the vibration was gone. This unit helps balance the engine and prop; there is still vibration but not like what it was before...

I asked Balance Masters about if there was an STC for putting these units on certified aircraft and they said that they were working with the FAA and so far nothing has happened. But for now it was for experimental and ultralight aircraft.

I am not an engineer, but I do know that the truckers have been using this kind of unit on their wheels for years and have gotten 50% more life out of their tires. Just think what it could do for the life of an aircraft engine. Anyhow I am going to leave it on my Ercoupe for now until someone tells me I have to take it off.

The web site is www.balancemasters.com.

As usual, the homebuilt and ultralight worlds are ahead of certified aircraft when it comes to new advances. I have no idea what the presence of one of these on an Ercoupe would mean legally – all comments welcome! - Editor

66 years ago, when I was 17 at Bradley Field, Boise, Idaho during summer vacation from Lowell High School in San Francisco, I first soloed in an Ercoupe and then in a Luscombe 8A in 1950. By 1953 I had my Pilots License and never flew again.

Bradley Field near Boise was a public field but used primarily by my family to transport men and supplies into

our mines at Stibnite, ID and Patterson, ID. All of this was long gone by 1959. We also had a "Skytel" where pilots could stay over night at our motel. There was also a restaurant, hanger, tie downs and gas pumps. I worked a "gas boy" at Bradley Field and then in the mines during the summer.

I am now 83 and still hanging in there, but have fond memories of my Ercoupe days.

Best Wishes, Rick Bradley, now Realtor/Attorney, Coldwell Banker, Roseville, CA
