Summary of characteristics Introduction
This is the recommended inc ineratw f o r al l but large hospitals.
The instructions w h i c h f o l l o w a r t meant to be used in a l l countries. The b u i l d i n g instructions give the number and posit ion n f the bricks, but not the overall dimensions o f the incinerator". Th is is because bricks d i f f e r s l ight ly in size between one country and anolher, and i l is s impler lo adjust the overall si.ee o f t h e incinerator to the available bricks than t o have to cut bricks to an exact dimension.
S imi lar ly , only approximate dimensions o f the steelwork are given. The correct procedure is to lay o u t the f i rst t w o layers o f bricks, and then measure the length and breadth o f the steel w h i c h f i ts o n top. The steel top can then be made to fit the finished b r i c k w o r k .
The steel runnel and ash door can a l t o be dimensioned t o fit the b r i c k w o r k by taking measurements from the b r i c k w o r k once the tunnel is formed i n the first f ive layers o f br icks.
Use: designed espacially f o r most healthcare faci l i t ies, except large hospitals (more than 300 - 400 beds)

Remarks: Where the toad to be burned consists almost entirely o f sharps boxes f i l l e d w i t h used hypodermics, special conditions apply:
1. The plastic in the syringes has a very h igh calor i f ic value and addit ional f u e l w i l l not be required after the i n i t i a l w a r m up period.
2. Boxes should be introduced one at a t i m e . There w i l l be a b r i e f delay, then an increase i n smoke level f o l l o w e d by a gradual decrease. The next box should be introduced w h e n the smoke level is observed to be decreasing.
3. Tests have shown that this means that boxes o f up to 100 syringe* can be bunted at a rate o f about one every 10 minutes.
4. Introducing boxes at a higher rate than this w i l l result i n very h igh smoke rates and molten plastic at the base o f the incinerator.

The brick arch at the front is supported by a steel tunnel (3mm thickness). Steel angle (30x30x3) welded around the front edge of the tunnel forms the support for the ash door, which is hinged.

Operation
The incinerator should be started by purling waste papt-r, cardboard or similar easily ignited material over the grate. Burning paper can then be dropped on top, and when a good flame is established, more combustible material added till the combustion chamber is half full. I f available, about 100 cc of kerosene, diesel oil or used lubricating oil can be poured on top to speed the heating process. Only dry, non-infected waste should be added for the first 10 minutes or until a fierce flame is established.
The combustion chamber should be kept at least half full, and infectious and/or wet waste should be added above dry materials to ensure that it dries before reaching the combustion zone. Additional liquid fuel can be added i f it is suspected that the combustion rate is decreasing. Any plastic waste available wi l l also help to raise the temperature o f combustion, but both this and the nil wil l give rise to black smoke i f used to excess.
The incinerator wil l be most efficient i f it is operated for fairly long periods once it is ignited. The grate and the flue passage 10 the base o f the chimney must be kept clear by poking a steel rod through (he air inlet hole from lime to time. It may also be necessary to push down the load from time to time to prevent it "arching" above the grate. The last load before closing down should be as d ry and safe as possible, so that no unbumed material is left.

As with any type of equipment, there is a need to perform some regular maintenance lo ensure hath thai the system will continue lo work properly and to prolong (he life span ofthe incinerator.
