year. The next $15,000 will provide both a raised chancel area and sound upgrades for our New Life Center. The chancel area will be located below the “cloud cross” and will permit those in the back to see better and therefore more easily engage in worship. It will be about 27 x 16, and include eight-foot walls on either side which will help latecomers to feel less conspicuous, and help to define the sanctuary area. Sound improvements will include new wiring and cordless microphones to eliminate distracting static. Reconfiguring or replacing existing sound equipment, along with professional sound balancing, will provide a more even sound and reduce both overly loud and

“dead” sound locations. Improved sound will help us all to worship more easily and without distraction. Our special offering will consist of financial gifts and pledge cards. We encourage you to give generously, per-haps from savings, to provide the funds needed to start work immediately. Pledge cards will be available; the first $45,000 will fund the parking lot while additional funds and pledges will gradually provide funds for New Life Center improvements. Please remember that your general giving is very impor-tant. We encourage you to avoid reducing your weekly or monthly offering to contribute to the Miracle Offering. Please be in prayer for the success of this campaign, and how God may be calling you to participate.

into healthy habits of regular and committed wor-ship. Look for special surprises for children, and special music for everyone! September 7 is also Miracle Sunday. Look for a separate article describing this important offering happening during worship. Finally, it is also our annual Church Conference, beginning at noon. Lunch is provided for all who at-tend. Both our nursery and playground areas will have supervision to provide children with activity while adults and youth focus on goal setting. Our 20/20 Vision Team has been prayerfully hard

at work and needs your help to set goals related to our vision. Through a process called weighted voting, your participation at this gathering will set goals related to con-necting, growing, and serving for the next several years. Your participation is essen-tial. I expect we will conclude at 1:15pm. I invite you to pray that God will help us all to refocus in faith, invest in God’s kingdom,

and establish goals with God’s wisdom. Please make a commitment to God to attend and actively participate in this momentous day in the life of our church!

September 7: A Triple Celebration in the

Life of Our Church!

On September 7, Amlin Church will experience the most important Sunday in the life of our church in several years. I have been praying regularly for all that God will achieve through us on that day. Many in our church have been meeting, preparing, and looking forward to this day. Our church will celebrate three important occasions and I encourage you to be part of it, as our celebration will not be complete without you! First, September 7 is Rally Day. Rally Day marks the kickoff date for faith development at Amlin. We will celebrate a new Sunday school season for chil-dren and announce new Christian living groups for adults. It’s also a great day for some of us to jump back

Covenant is an in-depth, weekly beginner group Bible study that centers around our relationships with God, with each other, and with the world. It will begin at our church during the week of Sep-tember 27. It differs from other Bible studies in that it emphasizes the biblical concept of covenant- the enduring commitment between God and people- as a unifying pattern throughout the Bible. It builds trust in others as well as confidence in scripture. Covenant requires daily readings five days per week. The group requires only an eight-week commitment (unlike Disciple Bible study, which had been a 34-week commitment). How-ever, Covenant has three eight-week units that can

dard Covenant guide book. However, Covenant also has excellent digital options. You can receive a daily email with scripture reading, or even an interactive app that can be used with a tablet. Look for more infor-mation about curriculum options and group meeting locations at the sign-up table at church on Rally Day, September 7. We hope you’ll make the commitment to dig in to God’s word, develop deeper spiri-tual friendships at Amlin, and start a new

healthy pattern by participating in Covenant Bible study! If you’d like to be a host or a facilitator, please contact Pas-tor Steve, Pastor Jennifer, or Bruce Kerr.

Bucket Challenge has been met head-on at Amlin. As part of a campaign to heighten awareness of ALS and to raise funds for research and support, friends are challenged to submit to a drenching from a bucket of ice water or to do-nate $100 to the ALS Association. In a spirit of solidarity and friendship many accept the icy pain and donate the cash as well. After the Blessing of the Beasts service recently, Jason and Amy Hissong joined Pastor Steve below the cross on the front of the NLC to be drenched or pay up. Among other Amlinites accepting the challenge are Abby & Carson Sayre, Lynn Kerr, Josh Slaughter, and Amlin Community Preschool Teacher & Director Marybeth Walters. At the speed this campaign is moving just within our congregation, there are probably dozens more by now. 30 neighbors of the Ellis family lined their street at one time to pay up. If you’re not directly called out, it’s easy to find ways to donate and support the cause. One major opportunity is the ALS Walk on Sunday, September 21. Join Pam and Gary’s team. Hopefully, many of us will walk with them even though the time conflicts with the morning worship service. Carson and Abby Sayre have a new cousin! After years of praying, Jennifer Sayre’s sister and brother-in-law adopted a 6-week old girl! Welcome McKinley Layla Allard! On July 26, 2014, through the sacrament of baptism Kendall Kropp was initiated into Christ’s holy church. She was presented by her parents, Jennifer and Brad. All present were asked to nuture and support the family and to confirm their own commitment to Christ. We are delighted to welcome them all into our church family. Were we all listening to (and heeding) Pastor Steve’s message on gifts? Kearney Lykins, relative newbie to the early service, certainly was. His talent is musical, and he has offered to add his name to those who share piano praises. Thank you, Kearney. The Pewtiful Beautiful award this month is being re-placed. Rather than recognizing an exceptionally long and lovely row of friends and family, this month we acknowl-edge all the beautiful beasts who were blessed and who blessed us with their presence on August 17. One last note, be sure to attend the very important Amlin Church Conference right after the 2nd service on Septem-ber 7. The 20/20 renewal team will be presenting a vision for our church, and they need your input. The team will provide lunch, and child-care will be provided too.

The parents of our children are amazing! Incredibly busy as their schedules must be, they posted a great collection of first day of school photos. At least 12 of our 36 or more school-age kids appeared as my friends –from Jack Rumpf enter-ing kindergarten to Mychal Ellis and Emily Kerr starting their senior year. Thanks for the memories and good luck! By the way, many of these pics can be seen on the Amlin UMC Facebook page. Check them out.! And while you’re on Facebook, check out our preschool’s new page! Search Am-lin Community Preschool to find, like and share! Arlena Allen has had an exciting summer. She won a cash prize for her cheesecake entry in the Ohio State Fair and also spent a week at Girl Scout horse-riding camp. June may be the traditional month for weddings, but the anniversaries being celebrated by Amlin couples tell a differ-ent story. Millie and Orville Cruea celebrated their 60th with a reception hosted by their children and grandchildren at Riv-erside UMC. Angie and Keith Adkins and Bruce and Lynn Kerr also had August weddings, though much more recently. Future wedding bells will be ringing in late September for Christian Mateos and Steve Mortach. We wish all these couples many happy years ahead. On Sunday, Aug. 10, our congregation found itself without our usual pastoral leadership at workshop. Pastor Steve answered the call to participate in a worship service for the Ohio State Chorale, “The Encore! Summer Honors Choir.” Pastor Jennifer was just beginning a well-deserved vacation with Don, Abby and James. We were left in very capable hands, a second Pastor Steve. Who knew that Steve Mortach is also an ordained minister? His message carried a powerful punch. Is anyone counting the number or or-dained clergy, pastors or deacons, we have in our midst? In addition to the 2 Pastor Steves, there are Sonny Bayles, Orville Cruea, Mike Baldwin, Kim Wisecup and Lynn Pease. We’re not really leaderless, are we? Last month we rejoiced that Duane Randall was back with us, his cancer in remission. This month we can give praise and thanks for a long-awaited kidney donation for Lisa , daughter of Walter and Bev Hart. Our prayers are with her as she regains her health. In a show of support for Gary Ellis and others, the Ice

After a summer hiatus, Tavern Theology is set to re-launch on Tuesdays beginning on September 9 at 7pm. Tavern Theology is an informal group that meets for about an hour for sermon discussion, spiritual friendship, and prayer. We will meet at The Pint Room on Rt 161, just east of Old Dublin. We will also have a special event early in the Tav-ern Theology season. Curious? Please sign up at the sign-in table on Rally Day, Sep-tember 7, if you’d like more information about the special Tavern Theology event.

The Farm Science Review is one of the fundraisers the Special Church Funding Team has planned this year. The Review is located on Route 40 near London. We need volunteers to serve or prepare food in the Kiwanis food tent. No experience is needed. Each volunteer will be paid and these funds are donated to the church trustees for landscaping. The dates this year are September 16th, 17th and 18th, the hours 9:30 until 2:00. You may select any date that works with your schedule. You are admitted free and parking is free. Team up with a friend and enjoy the event, there are many free items at the show. Contact Margy Johnson, Sally Pauley or Doreen Cole to sched-ule your preferred date before August 25. Thank you!

]É|Ç ZtÜçËá ZtÇz4 Dear Friends and Family, As you may know my husband Gary was diag-nosed with ALS in January 2013 after several months of trying to figure out what was wrong with his voice. Now, a short time later, this horrible dis-ease has taken more than his voice, it has taken his independence. One thing is for certain, ALS

may take his muscles but it will never take his spirit or his contagious sense of humor. I am participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS® to do my part in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Why don't you join my team? The more walkers we have, the mer-rier, and the better for the mission of The ALS Association. We need people like you on my team. Your participation in the Walk will make a difference in the lives of those affected by ALS. Think about the ways that The ALS Association has impacted those around you. The money we raise will help The ALS Association support global research, assist peo-ple with ALS, fund multidisciplinary certified clinical care centers, and foster govern-ment partnerships. Each dollar we contribute will make a difference! The ALS Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. Personally, we are very connected with the ALS Association of Central and Southern Ohio. We attend the support group regularly and have been able to use various pieces of equipment for their loan closet. Without these loaner items, many PALS would not be able to remain in their own homes. We need your support, so please do anything you can! If you can't join my team, please consider making a donation to support my efforts. This year's Walk to Defeat ALS is Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Columbus Com-mons. Registration begins at 9:30 am and the 1.5 mile walk begins at 11 am. If you plan to walk, please let me know. We will be ordering team T-shirts again this year and I will need your shirt sizes. Gary and I hope that you will join Gary's Gang to de-feat ALS! Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you at the Walk! With love, Pam Ellis [email protected]

On September 7, new officers and ministry teams are forming. There are many ways to serve as a leader or team member at Amlin. Currently we are looking for new servants for the following teams: Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC): This team provides oversight for our pastor, and assists with hiring decisions related to all staff. SPRC is also very involved in the event of pastoral change. Have you ever supervised others in the workplace? Are you comfortable with encour-aging our staff to meet their ministry goals? If so, consider SPRC! Trustees: This team is entrusted with care for our facili-ties and other arrangements pertaining to our property, insurance, and repairs. Do you have a passion for making sure that God’s house is kept in good repair? Do you have any expertise related to insurance, facilities management, or service contracts? Are you an organized person and good with details? Do you enjoy being part of a team that gets things done? If you’ve said yes to any of these ques-tions, consider Trustees! Radical Hospitality: Do you remember what it was like to step into our church for the first time? This team is respon-sible for helping Amlin Church to be more visitor-friendly. Your team would also develop and implement a plan to ensure that all are welcome and find a place to connect with our faith community. Do you have a passion that no-body “falls through the cracks at Amlin? Would you like to

Interested in Serving God through Amlin church? help welcome new people to Amlin? If so, consider Radical Hospitality! Intentional Faith Development: Do you take growing in faith seriously? Do you believe that our church needs to ensure that people of all ages have ways to grow in faith and develop spiritual friendships? Would you enjoy select-ing small group reading material or implementing creative ways to help others to grow in faith, hope, and love? If so, consider the Intentional Faith Development! Risk-Taking Mission: Have you always enjoyed finding ways to serve others outside the walls of our church? Do you believe that the church becomes alive and faithful when we serve others? Would you like to create additional opportunities for others to make a difference in the world? If so, consider Risk-Taking Mission! Passionate Worship: Do you become excited about the idea of helping to create meaningful worship? Do you have interest in creating banners or artistic altar arrangements that draw people into worship? Do you enjoy drama, play-ing music, singing? Would it be satisfying to develop ser-mon topics or worship themes as part of a team? If you’ve said yes to any of these questions, consider joining Pas-sionate Worship! Please contact Pastor Steve if you’d like to be consid-ered for any of these opportunities at [email protected] or by telephone at 614 668-5001.

The newsletter is going green! In our continuing efforts to be good stewards of the earth and of the resources that the congrega-tion of Amlin UMC has entrusted to us, the newsletter team has decided to reevaluate its distribution. In the beginning, God asked us to be good stewards, taking care of the gifts God had created, which we can see in Genesis 2:15. After much prayer and careful consideration, we have decided that we will no longer print and mail issues of Country Talk. If you do not receive the newsletter by email, please call the church office at (614) 771-1904 or email us [email protected].
