“It’s knowin’ that your door is always open/And your path is free to walk.”Those opening lines, an easy-going banjo riff and a descending chord pro-

gression turned Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind” into one of the best-known titles of the 1960s.

Despite its status as a classic, “Gentle” has a rather odd chart history. It peaked at No. 30 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs when it was released in 1967 and only reached No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a rerelease in 1968. “Gentle” instead found its biggest support on the Easy Listening chart, where it climbed to No. 8, boosted perhaps by its literary verbiage — “I dip my cup of soup back from a gurlin’, cracklin’ caldron in some trainyard” — in a post-folk era.

Composer John Hartford subsequently nabbed a Grammy for best country & western song, and Campbell’s recording won the Academy of Country & Western Music’s single record of the year, but the world got to know “Gentle” best as the theme song for Campbell’s CBS TV series.

“The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour was my first real introduction into music,” says producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Brantley Gilbert), who — like Campbell — first made his mark as a Los Angeles session guitarist. “He was my first hero, because he played guitar, so I watched that show religiously.”

“Gentle” appears repeatedly during Glen Camp-bell: I’ll Be Me, a documentary about his battle with Alzheimer’s disease that opens Oct. 24 in New York and Nashville. As the opening song in his farewell concert tour, the familiar chords play at numerous points in the film as he walks onstage in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York and Napa, Calif., where he gave his final concert on Nov. 30, 2012. The movie also finds him rehearsing with The Band Perry for a 2012 Grammy tribute that includes “Gentle,” and the group’s version of the song plays over the end credits.

“At the studio in L.A., when it came time for him to sing ‘Rhinestone Cowboy,’ he sat his guitar down, he took off the jacket that he had on, and he put on his rhinestone jacket to rehearse the song,” says TBP’s Kimberly Perry. “I thought that was such a cool moment, because he’s the quintessential entertainer.”

Campbell’s peak years came and went before The Band Perry had even arrived — Kimberly, the oldest of the trio, was born in 1983 — but the siblings came to appreciate Campbell through their parents. They were particularly infatuated with the lyrical craftsmanship in “Gentle On My Mind.”

“Here in The Band Perry, we have very poetic hearts,” observes Kimberly. “ ‘If I Die Young’ was a very poetic-written lyric. In fact, it was a piece of prose before it was actually a song. So I think that was really what attracted us initially to ‘Gentle On My Mind,’ especially in the first verse where it says, ‘I keep my sleep-ing bag rolled up and stashed behind your couch.’ It’s a masculine perspective.”

“When a girl sings from a guy’s perspective,” says TBP mandolin player Neil Perry, “I think that’s a really cool kind of spin on a song.”

The original perspective came courtesy of Hartford, a folk/bluegrass singer/songwriter who died in 2001. He likely wrote “Gentle” in early 1966. Hartford had been collecting some of the images in his mind, and they came tumbling out after he and Jim Glaser, of Tompall & The Glaser Brothers, took their wives to see Doctor Zhivago, an epic tale from World War I-era Russia that de-buted in theaters on Dec. 31, 1965.

“When I came home I was really turned on,” Hartford told author Dorothy Horstman in Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy. “I sat down and wrote it, and that’s how it came out. It has a lot of other scenes in it in addition to that movie, but the movie had a long traveling sensation that I liked.”

It was an appropriate song to close I’ll Be Me, since the documentary follows Campbell’s travels on his final tour. Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) president/CEO Scott Borchetta suggested TBP might want to be on the soundtrack, and “Gentle” was the band’s immediate pick.

“We’ve gotten to explore a lot of sounds,” says Kimberly, noting the pumped-up energies of “Better Dig Two” and “DONE.” “It was a very poignant moment for us to say, ‘We love the foundations of country music. That’s where our heartbeat is.’ ”

The iconic stature of “Gentle” made it tricky. It would likely sound new to many younger country fans, but the genre’s older consumers would know it intimately. TBP needed to respect the original but also bring something new to the table.

“You don’t want to lose the identity of the song,” bass player Reid Perry says. “People are used to hearing a certain sound.”

“Gentle” was the first song they tackled on day two of sessions for their third album at John and Martina McBride’s Blackbird Studios. Banjo player Ilya Toshinsky, acoustic guitarist Jerry McPherson and drummer Aaron Sterling joined

the tracking band, as did keyboard player Charlie Judge, who created an ethe-real, synth-based pad for the opening verse, which Kimberly sang in elongated fashion without a real time signature.

“There was no click track or anything,” says Huff. “She just sang the whole first verse almost like she was reading the lyrics from her diary. At the end of that first verse, that little banjo came in, and off we go to the races.”

With each successive verse, they gradually added new sounds, with Neil and Reid layering counter-melodies at the close during overdubs to define the TBP take.

“There’s not really a chorus,” Reid observes. “It’s four verses, so we had to get creative with background vocals and banjo licks and stuff like that to keep it interesting through the entire length of the song.”

The performance was interesting enough that BMLG thought it single-wor-thy, although the tempo-less, rubato first verse posed a problem. So Huff spent two days cutting and pasting alternate instrumental takes with Pro Tools from verse two to the beginning of the track to build a new foundation for the open-ing stanza. Kimberly headed to NightBird Studios in West Hollywood to re-sing that first verse. Huff listened in remotely from Nashville, trusting engineer Juliette Amoroso to capture Kimberly’s vocals properly.

BMLG’s Republic Nashville released the revised version to radio via Play MPE on Sept. 29. It debuted on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart dated Oct. 11 at No. 54. The Band Perry will sing it during an Oct. 19 Alzheimer’s benefit in Nashville that includes a screening of the film, which captures Campbell’s end-of-life health issues in a powerful way. And they’re knowin’ that the door is always open to future performances.

“We may or may not be playing this on the CMA awards,” says Kimberly. “We may or may not be revising that initial first verse.”

What’s the next career stop after a long and successful run in country record pro-motion? Increasingly, the answer to that question seems to be artist management.

When Allen Mitchell took a job at Erv Woolsey Management in late July, he became the latest in a growing string of country label execs to make a similar move. Mitchell’s 12-year promotion career included stints at Mercury, Univer-sal South and Bigger Picture. He now helps manage newcomers Tyler Reeve, Marissa Rhodes, The Davisson Brothers Band and Stone Senate.

Angela Lange joined Q Prime South as vp country promotion in February 2013. The 17-year re-cord vet was previously vp pro-motion at EMI Nashville. The move to management reunited her with Eric Church, an EMI artist managed by Q Prime that she has worked with since the beginning of his career. She now also works with fellow EMI act Brothers Osborne.

Buffy Cooper joined Morris Higham Management in January 2012 in the newly created position of vp radio promotion and marketing, arriving from the director of national promotion job at Sony’s Columbia/BNA. She now works with three acts signed to her former employer — Kenny Chesney, Jake Owen and Leah Turner — as well as indie artists Martina McBride and Old Dominion.

Karen McGuire has been working at Triple 8 Management since October 2010 as director of radio promotions after a stint at Universal South and 16 years at Curb Records. She currently represents an eclectic mix of established acts and newcomers, including Eli Young Band, Joe Nichols, Chase Rice, Sam Hunt, The Cadillac Three, Jack Ingram, Kevin Fowler and Josh Abbott Band.

Longtime Dreamworks and Show Dog-Universal regional Suzanne Dur-ham now works directly for the latter label’s proprietor, Toby Keith, and his manager, T.K. Kimbrell, at TKO Artist Management, in the capacity of Keith’s liaison to radio. She has held that position since January 2011.

Interestingly, no two of these management roles are exactly alike. While Lange and McGuire’s jobs focus mostly on country radio, Cooper’s position involves a marketing element. Durham handles some social media responsi-bilities, and Mitchell’s job is straight-up artist management.

What they have in common is that the skill sets they learned on the promo-tion side, particularly in the area of relationship-building, are helping them suc-ceed in their current roles. Except for Mitchell, all say their jobs are designed

to enhance the promotion efforts of the label staffs they work with.

But initially def ining those roles is not always easy. Cooper admits that while she and Colum-bia Records vp promotion Nor-bert Nix have a great relationship now, in the early days of her job, “I was walking on eggshells there for a while. He and I, we butted

heads hard sometimes.”Now, she says, “I always tell Norbert and [his team] they’re the front line,

and I want to support the front line,” she says of her role. “I also try not to get in the way of their relationships” with radio.

Lange agrees, saying that with the EMI promotion staff, “Early on I tried to be clear that we’re on the same team, that I’m here to help you, not to work against you … We have the same goal, really. We’re trying to get our artist played on the radio and exposed.”

Adds Lange, “It’s really been more of a mind-set of ‘I’m not here to do your job or push you out of the way. I’m here to help you as a partner.’ ”

McGuire says she’s known inside her office as “the connector,” as her job en-tails linking the management team, the artists, their labels and country radio. “It’s a partnership all the way around. The labels we have [acts signed to] are great teams, and I’ve know most of the people at the top for 25-30 years. So we’re friends first, but we’re here to do a job. I’m here to help them any way possible.”

think the difference is you only have six people running for that office. You’ve got 6,000 trying to get that track sold or to get you to come to a show. So the pool is a whole lot more crowded.

Do most artists understand they need devel-opment? A common thread of new artists is, “I’ve got my music, I’ve gotta put it out. Every-body wants it. I’m ready to go.” No, you’re prob-ably not. But for the most part, they now realize they need it. They realize there are all these ele-

ments to how the industry works. You’ve got the digital, the website, stream-ing services, the road. You’ve got, “Do I want a record deal? Do I not want a record deal? What is Sirius XM doing? How do I do that? Do I need to do the other radio, too?” There’s so many pieces, and they realize they need help.

If you go to a label, they will want to know what your social numbers are, and that’s a job in itself. It’s asking an enormous amount of an art-ist to have all that going in. Just to use that example, you are asking them to not just gain fans and followers, but to grow engagement. If you have a mil-lion likes and nobody is engaging, then it’s worthless to you. Then you have to develop content. Then you gotta figure out what content worked. Go do more of that. Oh, by the way, I have a co-write in the morning, and I’ve gotta go do this demo, and I’ve gotta do this gig because I gotta pay my rent. Then I gotta go see if I’m getting a publishing deal, because maybe then I don’t have to work a second job. I need to figure out if somebody will book some of these shows and who’s going to tell the paper we are coming. There’s all of that, and you’re spread too thin. And it’s not their skill set. What we try to do is put together that team for them, because a manager isn’t necessarily all of those things either.

Where are you with the company? It started in February, and we’ve worked with, I think, seven acts, so far. It’s grown faster than I anticipated because I guess the need that I thought wasn’t being filled really isn’t. There are other folks helping develop people as well, but there’s definitely a need and so far, it looks like we are doing a pretty good job — at least a good enough job to have people keep coming and being referred.

I guess when you have your first person that breaks through, then you’ll really be getting the phone calls. All that takes time. This isn’t about trying to race up the chart or a race to sell a million. It’s really about building the foundation and building a career that can last. —Tom Roland

Q U E ST I O N S

AnsweredStephen Linn

Owner, AmpliFLY Entertainment@StephenLinn

When Stephen Linn moved from Arizona to Nashville as a reporter for WSMV-TV in 1989, he started an odyssey that led unexpectedly to building an independent music-industry firm. He first segued into political consultant work, which led to multimedia marketing; digital marketing, music strategy and promotion for CMT; and a one-year stint at BBR Management, where he helped establish Parmalee. Linn ultimately decided to pool all the pieces from that background into AmpliFLY, a company that specializes in building business plans and marketing strategies for new acts.

What exactly is AmpliFLY Entertainment? Artist development, management and music marketing. The one thing I kept coming around to as I talked to label heads or agents or artists is that no one is really doing artist development anymore. Labels used to do it, but they don’t spend the money anymore. Some management groups do a really good job of it. But as a whole, it doesn’t get done. What we’re trying to do, it’s not about radio [or] getting on Taylor Swift’s tour. It’s about developing a sustainable career. The reality is, of everyone who’s going to play music in America this weekend — millions of peo-ple at a festival, at a club, wherever — 10 of them will be radio stars, and chances are it won’t be you. So my stock line is, “When you’re on-stage, you’re an artist. When you’re not, you’re running for governor.” It’s all that “running for governor” stuff that can build a sustainable career. If we do our jobs right, in 12-18 months, we’re out of work.

Which is harder to get attention for — an artist or a politician? It’s kind of the same. People either care about you or they don’t. I

COLT FORD’S NEW ADVENTUREColt Ford enlisted Eagle Rock Entertain-ment to shoot his first concert DVD, Crank It Up! Colt Ford Live at Wild Adventures, on Aug. 2. Set for a Nov. 11 release, the 20-track set features his version of “Dirt Road An-them,” the Jason Aldean hit he co-wrote, plus a live take on “Drivin’ Around Song,” which Ford originally cut as an Aldean col-lab. Ford’s most recent album, Thanks for Lis-tening, debuted at No. 3 on Country Albums.

Montgomery Gentry partnered with Garth Brooks’ new GhostTunes digital retail platform to offer a “Check Your Headlights” bundle with all the proceeds headed to breast cancer research. The $19.99 package includes the duo’s current single, “Headlights,” and a “Check Your Headlights” T-shirt.

Country Music Association Awards nominees Brandy Clark and Jaren John-ston will play the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame on the eve of the CMA Awards, Nov. 4, as the organization presents an installment of its Songwriters Series. Clark is nominated as a songwriter this year for co-writing Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow.” Johnston, of The Cadillac Three, is nominated as a co-producer of Dierks Bentley’s album Riser and single “Drunk on a Plane.” As a writer, he had recent hits with “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s” and “Sunshine & Whiskey.” Other writers will be announced for the Songwriter Series at a later date.

Florida Georgia Line headlines New York’s prestigious Madison Square Gar-den for the first time on Feb. 25 as the duo rolls out its Anything Goes Tour. The schedule, which marks the first time the act has topped the bill at arena-level buildings, launches Jan. 15 in Toledo, Ohio, with Thomas Rhett and Frankie Ballard on the bill.
