Walkerton Patriotic Boat Parade going under the Walkerton Bridge
On July 8, 2020, Ms. Tiffany M. Webb was sworn in as Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney of King
William County, joining Commonwealth’s Attorney, Matthew Kite, and his staff. Tiffany will be heading
up the office’s prosecutions in cases involving violence against women.
Tiffany was raised in West Point, Virginia, and educated in the West Point School system. After high
school, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she received her Bachelor of
Science in Criminal Justice in 2007, then she matriculated to The College of William and Mary School of
Law, graduating in 2011 with her Juris Doctorate.
Please see Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney, on page 7.
By Armistead Saffer The inaugural Walkerton Patriotic Boat Parade took place on the 4th of July on the Mattaponi River. About 45 boats met up in front of Dick
Campbell's Cottage and paraded up river to the Walkerton bridge led by the 38 Special, a vintage trawler built circa 1938. The bridge displayed a
giant American flag and was lined with spectators as the boats passed under it. The King William Sherriff's office also participated with Sherriff Jeff
Walton and Sgt. Mike Williams on board. Many of the boats in the parade were decorated and awards were given to the best three boats.

Have you seen Comet Neowise? It’s
visible an hour after sunset in the North
West sky below the Big Dipper. It’s best
to view it on a clear night. Using
binoculars will help because it’s
sometimes difficult to see with the naked
eye.
Comet Neowise also known as C/2020
F3 will be closest to earth on July 23rd. It
will be 64 million miles from our planet.
Comet Neowise was just discovered in
March by NASA’s space-based telescope
also called NEOWISE that searches for
dangerous objects headed towards Earth.
NEOWISE is an acronym for Near-Earth
Object Wide-field Infrared Survey
Explorer. NASA’s NEOWISE telescope
has been in orbit for ten years. Comets are
usually named after who discovers them.
Comet Neowise will only be visible
through mid-August. Get out and try to
see it. It won’t return to Earth for another
6,800 years!

Hope everyone is staying cool with the hot temperatures. Days like
this I must remember to pace myself. One day at a time, be safe. Keep
positive thoughts, they will attract more positive thoughts.
Take care until next time.

Hot and Humid
By Allen Brintley and “Pip”
The weather lately has been
pretty hot. With the temperatures
and humidity in the upper 90’s,
Pip and I both can just stand in
the shade and sweat. I guess it’s
just that time of year for it. It
does create some things to be
aware of. It’s easy for your
animal to get overheated. Make
sure they have plenty of fresh
water and a shady spot or a cover
from the sun. Also, trying to get
fly spray to stay on Pip and not
get washed off by sweat or
occasional rain. I did see some
fly spray that says it is sweat and
water-resistant. It reminds me of
that hairspray women use called
water-net or aqua-net or
something. You know that kind
that keeps their hair in place even
in a hurricane. My Granddad use
to tell me to be careful about
getting something that soap and
water won’t wash off. I’ll have to
check into that new fly spray a
little closer and may give it a try.
There was a little old lady that
heard a noise out front of her
house one hot summer day. She
looked out the front door to see a
young boy had run a hay wagon
in the ditch and turned it over in
her front yard. It was so hot, she
called to him and said “Young
man, take a break and come get
something cool to drink.” The
little boy said “Thanks just the
same, but I need to get this hay
wagon upright or my Pa is going
to be upset.” She said “Nonsense.
It’s so hot outside, your Pa won’t
be upset if you take a few
minutes and rest in the shade.”
The little boy said “Yes ma’am
he will. My Pa will be very upset
if I don’t hurry and get this hay
wagon back upright.” The little
old lady said “I don’t understand.
Where is your Pa?” The little boy
said “Under the wagon!”

Dear Editor,
REC election process
I want to begin by strongly encouraging all
members of the Rappahannock Electric
Cooperative (REC) to participate in the REC
election process. I also want to strongly endorse
Sanford Reaves, Randy Thomas and Gene
Campbell for re-election.
Why vote for the incumbent directors? They
have all worked diligently to find the right
balance between reliability, affordability and
sustainability. All three have been part of the
budget process to ensure projects funded will
maintain reliability of the REC network. They
understand the financial struggles facing REC’s
members and understand electric bills can be a
major part of their budget. All of them take
very seriously the responsibility to analyze and
approve budgets for projects that will bring the
greatest cost/benefit to keep the cost of power
affordable. Along with all REC Directors,
they care about the environment. To be
environmentally sustainable, Cooperative Sun
Share was introduced, and more renewal
energy is continually being added to REC’s
power supply. While sustainability is
important, your REC directors understand it
must also be balanced between having an
affordable and reliable power supply.
As you participate in the REC election process
please be assured that whether it is finding
viable solutions to rural broad band, or keeping
your electric rates affordable, Sanford, Randy,
and Gene are all committed to serving the
members of REC in a balanced, transparent and
accountable manner. Please vote to re-elect
Sanford, Randy and Gene so REC can continue
to maintain the right balance between
reliability, affordability, and sustainability.
Chris Shipe,
Chairman of the REC Board of
Directors
Dear Editor,
A Thank You Letter To KQPS
With all the craziness that's taken place with
Covid 19 and school systems shutting down, I
want to thank all those involved with the King
and Queen School system for a very special
service performed for our son, Jeremiah
Morris. You see, King and Queen Central High
School will be having their graduation
"tentatively" July 24th and our son had joined
the early enlistment program with the army and
would be leaving for Fort Jackson South
Carolina on June 15. The principal at Central
High School called us and asked if they could
hold a commencement service, just for
Jeremiah, as he was the only student that would
be unable to attend the regular service. He was
allowed to march into the auditorium with
"Pomp and Circumstance" playing, joining the
superintendent of schools Dr. Carter, current
and former Principals of CHS Ashley
Reynolds, and Mr. Mckellar respectively,
school board member Harwood Hall and many
other teachers and staff. There were speeches
and presentation of diploma, as well as gifts
and pictures being taken. It was truly an
outpouring of love from our Tiger Community
for our son. It was an awesome ending to his
high school career and for that we are truly
thankful.
Sincerely,
Joe and Lori Morris

King William High School Graduation Celebration
Story by Florence Cooke

Around midnight on Friday night, July 10th, a
fire on Mount Olive Road destroyed a house
and mobile home belonging to Martha Stewart.
She and her five grandchildren were getting
ready to move from the house into the mobile
home. The fire was a total loss of the house and
mobile home and there was no insurance on
either.
Fire units from Walkerton, Mangohick and
King William were on scene for several hours
and then again on Saturday morning for hot
spots. The King William Ruritan Club is
donating $500 to help support the cleanup of the
site so the family can bring in another mobile
home. The estimate for the cleanup container to
haul the debris away is approximately $1,500.
The grandmother, four grandsons – ages 16,
13, 13, and 11 and one granddaughter – age 12,
need clothes. The clothing and shoe sizes are:
Grandmother: Size 12 pants and XL tops;
Girl – Size 14 pants, large tops and size 9 shoes;
Boy #1 – 30/32 pants, large men’s shirts, 12 ½
shoes; Boy #2 – 30/30 pants, large men’s
shirts, and 9 ½ shoes; Boy #3 – 14/16 pants,

King William High School celebrated its class
of 2020 in an unprecedented but fitting and
memorable graduation ceremony on June 23rd,
24th, and 29th. Because of the COVID-19
pandemic, the school was not able to celebrate
in its traditional fashion but was still able to
put together a ceremony that served as a
satisfying ending to the graduating students'
high school career. “The class of 2020 at
KWHS is a special group of students who will
go on to do great things. They are a passionate
group of young adults who will begin to make
a difference in our community in the near
future. We are proud of who they have been for
the last 4 years and we are excited about their
future successes," stated principal Corey
McConville.
The ceremony took place over the course of
three evenings, as the first half of the
graduating class participated in the June 23rd
ceremony, the second half participated the
following evening and a makeup day occurred
on June 29th. "With the uncertainty of COVID
-19 we made the decision to move graduation
up to June 23rd. From the outset of the
pandemic, we wanted to ensure that seniors
had the opportunity to walk across the stage.

My young son,
You were taken away from us way too soon. We surely
were not ready to let you go. You would've been 33 today,
still so young. Your dad, brother and I have kept on going
without you. It has been so hard not to see you and hear
your voice and that laugh! We'd laugh at you, laughing at
the way you laughed at your jokes!! You were the most
loving and godly young man and I learned from you. You
helped me be a better Christian. The only color you saw
was in the sky, a blade of grass, a big ol jacked up truck!!.
You loved everybody and everybody loved you!! We love
you and miss you beyond measure.
~your wings were ready but our hearts were not~
Till we meet again - love you forever Mom and dad

Barbara Morgan of
King William has an
unusual hobby – she
is dedicated and
passionate about
raising and showing
se rama ban ta m
chickens. They were
imported to the
United States from
Malaysia in 2000 by
Jerry Sxhexnayde.
Serama bantams
are the smallest
bantam chicken in the world. They weigh
between six ounces for a tiny hen to a little
over a pound for a male. Bred for exhibition
they live inside and should not be put in a
chicken house outside. They can be any color
and are bred in three feather types – smooth,
silkied and frizzled. Seramas have a stunning
soldier like appearance standing at a 90 degree
angle. The ayan serama stands even more
upright with a back tail angle.
Mrs. Morgan states: “When I lived at
Waterloo in Albertson, North Carolina, I
became interested in Seramas and purchased
the beginning of my strain from the best birds I
could find. It is important to me to bring out
the natural qualities of the Serama and try to
breed to perfection.”
She has about 100 Seramas of all three breeds
and all ages in cages in a chicken house under
a big shade tree with a fan blowing to keep the
bantams cool. There are lots of crowing
roosters and flapping of wings and quiet music
playing on the radio. Mrs. Morgan is very
devoted to these Seramas and makes sure the
water and feed are replenished two times a day.
The wall in her den is covered with ribbons
won since she began showing her seramas.
She is frequently a winner in the Tabletop
Champion Class. In watching these beautiful
birds perform on a tabletop, a bird will show
off by dancing, crowing, flapping of the wings
– all with an air of greatness. They are getting
everyone’s attention by craving attention.
She is district representative of the Serama
Council of North America – Mid Atlantic
Region which covers Delaware, District of
Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia
and West Virginia. In the last month she won
three rosettes at the Mid Atlantic Regional
virtual show and two rosettes in the National
Finals virtual show – one Champion and one
Reserve.
According to Mrs. Morgan, “Seramas have
an adorable and engaging personality and make
great pets for everyone – especially children.
Encouraging local people to breed Seramas to
the standards as approved by SCNA is very
important to me. I feel that I am a true Serama
Enthusiasts and enjoy this great hobby.”

King and Queen Citizens Receive Meals
I am very grateful to my staff for putting
together a memorable event! There was a lot of
work involved, but my staff was glad to do it in
order to help our seniors celebrate." stated Mr.
McConville, who also credited the KWHS
community for making it to ensure that seniors
had the opportunity to walk across the stage.
Each student had a block of time where they
came to the school, received their diploma, and
was congratulated by the King William High
School administration. Each member of the
class of 2020 walked across the stage! Over
160 students participated over the three nights
as this deserving group of students prepares to
embark on the next chapter of their lives. The
entire ceremony was recorded. Seniors will
receive a video of the special event and
a professional picture as a thank you, as well as
a way to remember their graduation
celebration!
During the ceremony, speeches were given by
the co-valedictorians (Channing Pitts and
Meghan Gilmer), salutatorian (Zoe Wilson),
and class president (Corey Stewart).

I have enjoyed being your dentist. I am
announcing the closing of my dental
practice upon my retirement effective
August 31, 2020. I have practiced
dentistry in this community for forty-four
years, and I have chosen to bring my
active practice to a close to spend more
time with my family.
I am very fortunate to have practiced
dentistry in a community that supports my
efforts so greatly. I have enjoyed our
friendship and your commitment to oral
health over the years. It has been my
pleasure to meet the dental needs of you
and your family.
If you have insurance you may contact
your dental insurance company and they
will give you a list of dentists who will
accept your insurance. To transfer your
records to you or another provider please
send a written request with address of
where you would like them to be sent.
I wish you and your family all the
best. Keep a healthy smile!
Sincerely,
David E. Townsend, D.D.S.

"King and Queen County Public School
Board approved a Reopening Plan for the 2020
-2021 school year on July 15, 2020. King and
Queen Public Schools (KQPS) schools will
begin the 2020-2021 school year on Tuesday,
September 8, 2020. This later start date
provides additional time for the staff to prepare
for instruction through a hybrid in person and
remote learning model. It also ensures
buildings are outfitted with the necessary items
to support a safe and healthy learning
environment.
Students in grades PK-7 will follow an AA/
BB schedule. Students in Group A will receive
instruction on-site Monday and Tuesday and
work remotely from home Wednesday through
Friday. Students in Group B will work
remotely from home Monday through
Wednesday and receive instruction on-site
Thursday and Friday. Wednesdays will be
utilized for cleaning procedures, teacher
planning and professional development.
Students in grades 8-12 will follow an A/B/C
schedule. Grade 8 will attend on A days;
grades 10 and 12 will attend on B days and
Grades 9 and 11 will attend on C days. Student
schedules will be based on a 7-period day for
the 2020-2021 school year. Teachers will
utilize non-instructional time to provide
remediation, plan for remote learning and
participate in professional development.
Any siblings throughout the division will be
on-site the same days, regardless of which
schools they attend. Students will be required
to wear masks on the bus and in the building
when 6’ distancing cannot be maintained. The
division will request a variance to have
students sit one per seat and will maintain
physical distancing on routes with fewer
students.
Families can select a virtual-only learning
option if they would prefer. Families must
have internet access or the means to access
through other options such as driving to an area
with open WiFi access. More detailed
information is forthcoming in reference to class
schedules, transportation and virtual learning
options. Information will be posted to the
division website and Facebook pages as well as
mailed to all families."
