Papua-Neuguinea ist nach Indonesien und Madagaskar der flächenmäßig drittgrößte Inselstaat der Welt. Er liegt im Pazifik, wird zum australischen Kontinent gerechnet und umfasst den Osten der Insel Neuguinea (der westliche Teil, West-Neuguinea, gehört zu Indonesien) sowie mehrere vorgelagerte Inseln und Inselgruppen. Etwa 80 % der Landesfläche werden vom Ostteil der gebirgigen Insel Neuguinea eingenommen. Daneben gibt es eine Reihe von Inseln und Inselgruppen. Papua-Neuguinea ist Teil des pazifischen Großraums Melanesien, der von Neuguinea bis zu den Fidschi-Inseln im Osten reicht. Geografisch liegt Neuguinea am Rande des tiefen Ozeanbeckens auf einem stark verformten, bis heute vulkanisch aktiven Teil der Erdkruste. Vom Miozän bis zum Pleistozän faltete sich die Erdoberfläche hier stark und schuf die Buchten, Gebirge und Inselketten des Landes.

Most of the population of over 7 million people live in customary communities, which are as diverse as the languages. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18 per cent of its people live in urban centres. The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior.
