CounterPunch Charity Boxing Tournament Fundraiser Darwin’s Cyclone Amateur Boxing Clubs CounterPunch Program will again be hosting its charity boxing tournament called “Wannabe Boxing” in March 2015! This is the club’s major fundraiser to support our young participants in their activities. The “Wannabe Boxing” tournament will see a mix of men and women who will have trained together for 8 weeks getting fit to fight, developing their boxing skills and then jumping in the ring to raise money for the kids at the same time. The CounterPunch program itself has a primary focus on early intervention for young people who are starting to become disaffected at school or where behaviour change is starting to become apparent. The CounterPunch program is an opportunity for these young people to re-engage with life and learning through participation in boxing classes with coaching and mentoring in life skills. The “Wannabe Boxing” tournament is a fantastic way to raise much needed funds for the program, and the “Wannabe Boxers” will need to raise $2000 each in sponsorship to compete in the tournament. We are hoping to see family and friends, local businesses, government departments and other organisations support our “Wannabe Boxers” through sponsorship, and even follow up to make up a dinner table on the night to cheer on their heroes as they slug it out! Darwin’s Cyclone Amateur Boxing Clubs CounterPunch Program will again be hosting its charity boxing tournament called “Wannabe Boxing” in March 2015!

The Program

The CounterPunch program schedule corresponds with Northern Territory school terms. Ideally groups attend for a full school year.

Phase 1 is mainly physical activity including group “norming and forming”, establishing relationships and the introduction of boxing related activities.

Phase 2 and Phase 3 introduces the structured life skills components.

During school hours groups must be accompanied by a school supervisor.

By participating in CounterPunch students, in consultation with their school, may obtain credits towards school curriculum classes including:

Community Development

Social and Personal Development

Physical Training

Health

1 LIFE

Life skills

The CounterPunch life skills component uses discussion groups to examine questions about the way we live our lives

How can I be happy?Am I in control?Who controls my behaviour?What do I want?Is what I’m doing now getting me what I want?What do I really want?What’s my plan?

Through these discussions we learn skills to help us deal with some of the problems life throws at us such as:

How can I get on better with people? How can I deal with issues I am having at school/home/work?What can I do to help me feel good about myself? Can I change the way I look at things? If I change what I am thinking and/or doing will I feel better?Do I have a choice?

CounterPunch Darwin

The CounterPunch program is an opportunity for young people from 10 up to 19 years of age to re-engage with life and learning through participation in boxing classes with coaching and mentoring in life skills.

The 40-week program consists of physical activity and group discussion sessions. Gender specific group sizes range from 4 to a maximum of 8 participants and are supervised by two facilitators.

CounterPunch’s primary focus is on early intervention for young people who are starting to become disaffected at school or where behaviour change is starting to become apparent.
