What is counter-

reformation??

It was an advance made by the church to

regain the loyalty of the church members.

When did it

happen?

• It extended from the 1530’s to the end of the sixteenth century

As a result?

There were broad changes made because of the negotiations of the Council of Trent.

What was the Council of Trent?

• It was a group of cardinals that sensed there was a corruption of traditional chants. They felt that the singers were making additions to the Gregorian melodies.

What did the Council of Trent do?

• They banned the following:– Use of certain instruments in religious

services– Practice of incorporating popular songs in

masses– Bringing in of the secular spirit that had

invaded secular music– Irreverent attitudes of church musicians
