New York Mathematics: Applications and Concepts, Course 2 NY3

Go to bed early the night before the test. You will think more clearlyafter a good night’s rest.

Read each problem carefully, underline key words, and think aboutways to solve the problem before you try to answer the question.

Relax. Most people get nervous when taking a test. It’s natural. Justdo your best.

Answer questions you are sure about first. If you do not know theanswer to a question, skip it and go back to that question later.

Become familiar with common formulas and when they should beused.

Think positively. Some problems may seem hard to you, but youmay be able to figure out what to do if you read each questioncarefully.

If no figure is provided, draw one. If one is furnished, mark it up tohelp you solve the problem.

When you have finished each problem, reread it to make sure youranswer is reasonable.

Make sure that the number of the question on the answer sheetmatches the number of the question on which you are working inyour test booklet.

Pages NY10–NY30 of this text include a section called Countdown to the New York Test. The practice problems on these pages specifically address the New York Mathematics Performance Indicators that are assessed on the Grade 6 New York Test. Because the Grade 6 Test covers Indicators taught at the end of Grade 5 and Indicators taught at the beginning of Grade 6, theCountdown is written to address these Indicators.

Countdown to the New York TestYou should plan to complete one practice set each week to help you review the Grade 5 Post-March and Grade 6 Pre-MarchMathematics Performance Indicators.

One-a-DayPlan to spend a few minutes each day working on the practice problem(s) for that day unless your teacher asks you to do otherwise.

Reviewing SkillsIf you have difficulty with any problem, you can refer to the lesson that is referenced in parentheses after the problem.

Record AnswersYour teacher can provide you with an answer sheet to record your work and your answers for each week. A printable answer sheet is also available at ny.msmath2.net. At the end of the week, your teacher may want you to turn in the answer sheet.
