Blue Mile Tramway Link Reopens - A little rain didn’t dampen the spirits of all those who came along to a celebration marking the finish of the Blue Mile Tramway Seawall and Shared Path Upgrade. The multimillion dollar overhaul was finished three months early. The Blue Mile Tramway Seawall and Shared Path Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($900,000) and Wollongong City Council. Comic Gong - You came, you saw and everyone conquered this popular pop culture event presented by Wollongong City Libraries. And the good news is, it’ll be back again in 2019. So, pop Saturday 11 May in your diaries. Grand Pacific Walk - In the lead up to Christmas we’re working on the finishing touches on the first stage of the Grand Pacific Walk from Stanwell Park to Coalcliff. If you’re into selfies check out the viewing platform south of Lower Coast Road. It’s definitely one for Instagram. The Grand Pacific Walk Stage 1 project is proudly funded by the NSW Government under the Restart NSW Illawarra Infrastructure Fund in association with Wollongong City Council. Outdoor Fitness Equipment - We’ve continued to install free outdoor fitness equipment in key locations across the City. If you haven’t already, road test the equipment at MM Beach, Port Kembla, which delivers fitness benefits with a world class view. Port Kembla Revitalisation - Port Kembla’s bright future is the focus of the Port Kembla 2505 Revitalisation Plan and Port Kembla Implementation Plan. The plans were adopted in May and set out a 25-year vision for the suburb. Revamped Dapto Square - Through a partnership with Dapto Leagues Club, Dapto Mall management, Dapto Rotary, and Dapto Chamber of Commerce, Dapto Square has enjoyed a mini makeover. It includes a temporary play space, tables and chairs underneath shady umbrellas, Australian native bush tucker and bush medicine garden beds, and art works by local young people. Another big year working for you Port Kembla WOLLONGONG CITY COUNCIL • COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER • DECEMBER 2018 WOLLONGONG NEWS West Dapto Access Strategy including the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive link - This is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever delivered by Council. In July Council awarded the $39.9 million tender for the bridge between Fairwater Drive and Fowlers Road that spans Mullet Creek and the south coast rail line at Dapto. Work is well underway on the project anticipated to be wrapped up in 2020. The Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive Road link is funded by: $10 million from the Australian Government $22.5 million from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Illawarra Instructure Fund $3.229 million interest subsidy through the NSW Government - Office of Local Government’s Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme $600,000 Design Grant from NSW Government - Department of Planning and Infrastructure and, Wollongong City Council Wombarra Rock Pool Works - As part of our ongoing rock pool maintenance and improvement program, we’ve repaired Wombarra rock pool. The to-do list included new pool walls, a new ladder, seawall extension and new beach ramp. With good weather and seas, we hope to get it finished before Christmas. Remembering the 1998 Floods - In August we marked the 20th anniversary of the devastating floods of 1998. More than 1,000 homes were damaged by the floodwaters. The lessons learnt from this night has seen Council become an international leader in developing and managing infrastructure that directs rainfall, and implementing floodplain management strategies. UCI Road World Championships - In October it was announced one of the world’s biggest international cycling events - the UCI Road World Championships - is coming to our city in 2022. We’re proud of the role we’ve played in bringing this event to our City as it provides an opportunity to showcase our area to an unprecedented international TV audience. With 2019 just around the corner, we thought it was time to take a look at a few of the things we’ve delivered for our community over the past 12 months. We expect next year will be just as big! Countdown! To 2019 Get ready for 2019 at one of Council’s biggest and most popular family-friendly events - Acorn Lawyers’ New Year’s Eve. From 5pm on Monday 31 December the foreshore area around Belmore Basin will be a hive of circus- themed activity with live music, food and novelty stores, roaming circus performers and amusement rides. The ever-popular fireworks display will wrap things up at 9pm, giving everyone time to get home before the midnight hour is struck. It’s going to be a fun evening with more than 20,000 people expected to enjoy the family-friendly, alcohol- free event. We recommend public transport as the easiest way to get to and from the event.
