(Hepatitis, HIV, AIDS Awareness Program) Approximately 30% (1 in 3!) of persons inside Oregon Department of Correction [ODOC] institutions are liv-

ing with viral Hepatitis C. As many as 70 incarcerated persons are living with HIV, and more may be unaware

of their infection. These diseases are equal opportunity disease and understanding the basic facts of transmis-

sion and prevention are essential to staying healthy.

!!!ATTENTION!!! NOTICE FROM ADMINISTRATION

The Hepatitis-HIV-AIDS Awareness Program is a blood-borne pathogen peer-health-educator program that

supports incarcerated persons in learning the facts instead of the myths of blood-borne pathogen transmission,

prevention and treatment. This workshop series will be offered at PRCF in February, please see the sign-up

sheet in your housing unit for more information.

Did you know that having a prison based tattoo nearly triples the risk of Hepatitis C? Other risk factors in-

clude: former injection drug users, receiving clotting factors before 1987, or a blood transfusion prior to 1992.

To get tested for Hepatitis and HIV, call Medical to be added to the wait list.

And here’s what another AIP member had to say: I owe my recovery to myself. I owe the motivation to see

my program through to my support network and my fellow peers. As an addict I was a social pariah, a user, a thief, a man without his family, and lost. Drugs destroyed my relationships and made me feel hopeless. When I got to Coffee Creek my DOC case man-ager spoke to me of drug treatment at Powder River. He was of-fering me a new chance at life.

AIP has helped me take a good look at the problems that I have created in my life; walls that I built, thinking errors that I was perfect, and lies that I perceived as truth. The program has provided me the skills and courage to overcome these obstacles that I have created and lived by. I encourage each of you to hold fast to your goals of sobriety and future success. With the help of the program you will overcome.
