MUCHMuchis used with noncount nouns:

-How much water is in the glass?- It's almost full. There's a lot of water in the glass.

COUNT VERSUS NONCOUNTIt's important to understand the difference betweennoncount and count nounswhen using many and much. Noncount nouns are often used to describe large categories while count nouns are usually more specific.

MUCHUncountable nounscan only be used in singular. These nouns cannot be used with a number (that's why they are called 'uncountable nouns'). Uncountable nouns takemuch.Example:100 moneymuchmoney Note:Of course you can count money but then you would name the currency and say that you have got 5euro (but not 5money).

MUCH / MANYMuch and Many are usually used with the negative:Examples:There aren't many studentsin the classroom. (perhaps 4 or 5 students)There isn't much foodin the refrigerator. ( a small amount of food)

MUCH/MANYMuch and Many are usually not used in the affirmative:Examples:There are many apples in the basket.It sounds better to say...There area lot ofapples in the basket.There is much milk in the refrigerator.It sounds better to say...There isa lot ofmilk in the refrigerator.

EXAMPLESThere isacarin the street. (singular count noun)Question: Howmany carsare in the street?Answer: There are a fewcarsin the street (plural count noun)Question: Howmuch trafficis there?Answer: There is a lot oftraffic. (noncount noun)Noncount nouns always use a singular verb. Count nouns are singular or plural.
