LET’S PLAN COLUMBIA TOGETHER!
For the first time in almost 50 years, the City of
Columbia will have the unprecedented opportunity to
directly connect the City’s land use plan with its zoning and
development regulations. If you care about connecting
neighborhoods, providing places for jobs, ensuring housing
choices, preserving special places and creating a Columbia
future generations will love you should participate in one of
the Plan Columbia Workshops.
The workshops and drop-in will be at the Columbia
Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln Street. It is
essential to have community input about how to
accommodate future growth and development to inform the
plan. PLAN TOGETHER is a process to shape policies that will affect how and
where the City and County will grow for years to come. Two public workshops and
a drop-in will be held to help accommodate everyone who wish to come.

CITY OF COLUMBIA CONTINUES
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE
THROUGH THE SUMMER
SCE&G TO PERFORM TREE TRIMMING ACTIVITIES
AS SCHEDULED FOR 2014
SCE&G will perform tree trimming activities along
overhead utility lines in the following
neighborhoods for the next two weeks:
Greg Park Neighborhood Association
Lake Katherine
POA of Lake Katherine
Heyward Park Neighborhood
Crosshill Neighborhood
Kilbourne Park Neighborhood Association
The trimming will be completed by SCE&G contractors and work will be closely
monitored on a daily basis by the City’s four Certified Arborists from the Forestry
and Beautification Division.
The purpose of the trimming activities is to increase safety and reliability of the
electric service. SCE&G reports an 89 percent improvement in reliability in vege-
tation related outages in areas where trimming is completed compared to a year
ago. The trimming guidelines include removing vegetation within 8-12 feet below
and beside the power lines and up to 20 feet above the power lines.
SCE&G and their contractors trim in accordance with International Society of Ar-
boriculture guidelines, using ANSI A300 pruning methods leaving good cuts that
will generate new growth.
For more information about SCE&G’s tree trimming efforts, including helpful tips
and suggestions regarding the planting of trees and other vegetation, visit

COUNCILWOMAN TAMEIKA ISAAC DEVINE
ATTENDS THE WHITE HOUSE SUMMIT ON
WORKING FAMILIES
Councilwoman Tameika Isaac
Devine will be joining
President Barack Obama, First
Lady Michelle Obama, Vice
President Joe Biden, Dr. Jill
Biden and hundreds of other
Americans for the White House
Summit on Working Families
on Monday, June 23, 2014 in
Washington D.C.
“The gap between the wealthiest in our nation and others is growing at a rapid
pace," stated Council Member Tameika Isaac Devine. “In Columbia, 24 percent of
our residents are living below the poverty line, and an alarming number of low-
wage workers are living in temporary housing. I look forward to meeting leaders
from around the country to discuss ways that we can create workable solutions
to support working families."
Cohosted by the Center for American Progress and the Department of Labor, the
Summit on Working Families will focus on creating a 21st century workplace that
works for all Americans. A key focus of the White House Summit is the initiatives
in the When Women Succeed, America Succeeds agenda – such as equal pay,
raising the minimum wage, paid family leave and affordable child care.
The Center for American Progress is an independent nonpartisan educational in-
stitute dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through progressive ideas
and action. As progressives, we believe America is a land of boundless opportuni-
ty, where people can better themselves, their children, their families and their
communities through education, hard work and the freedom to climb the ladder
of economic mobility.
