Balranald wins Gold & Bronze! Balranald was the toast of many at the recent Inland Tourism Awards held in Broken Hill. Local tour operator Outback Geo Adventures won GOLD in the Tours and/or Transport category and after being opened for only six months the Balranald Discovery Centre picked up a BRONZE award for New Tourism Business. It is not often that a small town in outback NSW makes such a big impact at an awards ceremony with two awards. It is indicative of the focus and commitment Balranald is making towards building a sustainable tourism industry within the Shire both at a private operator level, such as Outback Geo Adventures, and at a Council level.
Outback Geo Adventures conducts unique tours from Balranald, including day tours, sunset tours and full moon tours to heritage listed Mungo National Park and day tours and sunset tours to Yanga National Park. The business which is operated by German and Paulina Ugarte continuously receives 5 star ratings on review
sites such as TripAdvisor. The Balranald Discovery Centre quickly gained attention in the region, and in its six months of operation, has been recognised as one of the best Visitor Centers around and has also been instrumental in raising Balranald’s tourism profile with visitor numbers consistently increasing when compared to previous months and years.
Balranald’s new Discovery Skate Park & Playground equipment are a hit!
It’s been a long time coming but judging from the popularity of the new skate park at the Balranald Discovery Centre, it’s been a worthwhile journey. The Balranald Discovery Skate Park is a credit to the many local residents, the Balranald Sk8 Committee, Balranald Inc, Balranald Shire Council staff and many other supporters who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively to make this dream a reality. Another popular arrival to the Discovery Centre Playground is the addition of state-of-the-art playground equipment that is fun & physical and with the edition of one special piece, is even interactive & educational. For more information on the interactive equipment please see the staff at the Information Centre.
PLEASE NOTE: Please see the advert inside for the official opening of the skate park and
coaching clinic!!

The 2015 Inland Tourism Awards were held in Broken Hill this year and Balranald businesses were very fortunate to be recognised in two categories.
I would like to congratulate German and Paulina Ugarte for winning Gold in their category of Tour and/or Tour Operator. What an achievement for your business and Balranald’s Tourism industry.
It is with pride that I also congratulate Connie Mallet and her wonderful team at the Discovery Centre for winning Bronze in the New Tourism Business category.
The Discovery Centre complex has had some changes of late, with Sue and Charlie Giansiracusa commencing in the Café and the installation of new playground equipment and skate park additions. We welcome Sue and Charlie! I also wish to thank Paul and Jo Fenna for their time managing the Café - your support has been immense.

Stronger Communities Program
Commencing in 2015/16, the Federal Government is providing $45 million in grant funding over two years to fund small capital projects in local communities in each of the 150 Federal Electorates.
This grant (allocation) is up to a maximum of $20,000 and must be matched in cash or in-kind on at least a dollar for dollar basis.
Council has $18,000 in the budget to undertake capital improvements at the Balranald Swimming Pool and would like to match these funds with grant funding to improve the temperature of the heated pool and provide separate access to the facility.
Council welcomes feedback on this proposal and/or suggestions for alternative projects to be considered for the funding. Please contact Council with your feedback by Wednesday 16 September with your suggestions / ideas.
