Council News marks one year

Tweets from 29 June Council meeting

Continued from page 1“Council is taking advantage

of the process of renewing the kerbside waste collection contract to look at ways to further reduce the amount of recyclables, garden green waste and food organics that go into landfill,” Mr Kausche said.

“There are a number of options available to assist this process, but significant community input is required in the planning stage to ensure that any potential changes are a success.”

Anything relating to Council’s waste services is up for discussion.

This includes, but is not limited to:

• introducing food organics collection and processing systems

• voluntary increases in size of household recycling bins and frequency of collection

• new pre-booked bulky waste collections in lieu of Free Tip Days

• extending kerbside waste collections

• enhancing the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre

• development of new waste recovery opportunities More information and

opportunities to contribute to the discussion can be found online.

Described at the time as a “one-stop shop” for news, public notices, job vacancies, events and more, Council News has been providing the community with vital information on a weekly basis ever since.

Weekly information

from us to you

On the surface, it

might not look like

much has changed.

But beneath the ground, thousands

of tonnes of contaminated material

has been removed from the former

Tarcutta Street gasworks site as part

of the remediation project, which

began in March 2013.

“About 14,000 tonnes of tar-

impacted material has been removed

from the site as part of Council’s

commitment to protect groundwater

and the surrounding environment

from contaminated material,” Wagga

Wagga City Council’s Manager

Environmental and Recreation

Services Mark Gardiner said.

“This has been a huge project for

Council, with four main excavations

along with several smaller trenches

to remove the source of

contamination and prevent it from

spreading.”

The gasworks started in the 1880s

and ceased operating in 1964. Over

the decades, the coal gasification

process created by-products such

as ash, tar pitch, coke, cyanide and

more – which were disposed of into

a former creek and then drained into

the Murrumbidgee River.

The gasworks site was gradually

extended towards the creek channel

and ash, coke and various other

production wastes were used as

backfill material.

After the closure of the gasworks

there have been several clean up

events between the 1960s and

1990s, often during demolition or

construction works.

In August 2012, Council appointed

Association members have been

rolling the pitch and working hard

to ensure a quality play surface

for the Blues and Bushrangers.

While the final squads are not

decided, it is expected a slew of

stars will descend on Robertson

Lyon, Moises Henriques, Doug

Bollinger, Chris Rogers, Peter

Siddle, Cameron White, Matt

Wade and James Pattinson all

available for selection.

Lyon, who hails from

staff team member at

Manuka Oval before

that, told Council News

he was looking forward

to spending some time

in the region.“I don’t get back to

the Riverina that often

unfortunately,” he said.

“I’d like to get there a

little bit more to see my

mother, father and grandmother.

“With my job now I

spend a lot of time away

from home, so whenever

I get back there it is

always good to catch up

Sheffield Shield cricket

to regional centres like

Wagga would benefit the

game and help nurture

the next generation of

first class players.

“I am looking forward

to getting down to

Robertson Oval and taking Shield

cricket to Wagga Wagga,” he said.

“Hopefully we see plenty of local

kids come out to the match.”

NSW captain Henriques agreed

and was particularly keen to see

the hometown of Blues bowling

coach Geoff Lawson.

One of the many talents that

help make Wagga the City of

Good Sports, Lawson was a fast

bowler for NSW and Australia

and also had a stint coaching

Pakistan.“The players won’t have much

knowledge of the ground at

Wagga Wagga, but information

tells me we’ll be training on Geoff

Lawson’s namesake ground,”

Henriques said.

“I think we should have a bit

of inside knowledge from big

Geoffro and he’ll be able to pass

on some information on how that

wicket plays.”Heading into this weekend’s

game against Tasmania, NSW

is currently ranked fourth with

19.12 points. Victoria sits on top

of the table with 28.21 points, with

Western Australia (22.01) second

and Tasmania (20.38) third.

The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery will celebrate 40 remarkable years at a special event this week.

The Wagga Wagga Art Society’s Silver Jubilee exhibition opened in the

Historic Council Chambers on 18 March 1975, writing the first chapter in the Gallery’s already rich history.

To help celebrate the past 40 years, four stunning new exhibitions have been brought together. The exhibitions will be launched at the Gallery’s anniversary on Wednesday, 18 March at

6pm in the Civic Centre.“This is not just about

the Gallery as an isolated institution,” Gallery manager Stephen Payne said.

“This is an occasion to celebrate all the cultural achievements of our community over the past four decades, and to embed Wagga Wagga as the

creative hub of our region into the future.”

From the Gallery’s own collections, Inspiration: 1975-2015 showcases the highlights of donations and acquisitions built up over 40 years, including works from the National Art Glass Collection and the Margaret Carnegie Print Collection.

Also drawing on the National Art Glass Collection, Evidence in Possession: The formative years of Australian studio glass illuminates Wagga’s role in the birth of glass as an artform across Australia.

The Wagga Wagga Art Society returns with Odyssey, an exhibition of works by

the Society’s members throughout the region.

Rounding out the celebrations is ABC Open: Our people, our stories, which uncovers the creative storytellers and makers of the Riverina.

New exhibitions to help celebrate anniversary

Council News is a new initiative of Wagga Wagga City Council aimed at providing the community with a ‘one stop shop’ for Council news, public notices, job ads and information on a weekly basis. “The main aim for Council when taking on this new initiative was to increase the community’s

ability to access the wide range of information generated by Council while effectively managing our overall annual expenditure on advertising,” said Mayor Rod Kendall. Each week, Council News will contain the latest decisions and deliberations of Council, news and information on the programs, services and projects available to the community as well as jobs, development application notifications, tenders and public notices.

“Council News is about taking a whole new approach to keeping our community up to date,” said Mayor Kendall.“The decision to implement

Council News is consistent with Council’s recent decisions about adjusting our operations to create a more financially sustainable future path.” All Council’s are legally required to advertise items such as tenders, development consent items, road regulations and public notices in their local newspaper.“Council News capitalises on meeting our legal notification requirements, by bundling it together with additional information that will help residents be involved and stay up to date with Council’s role in their community.”A crucial part of Council’s community engagement objectives is ensuring increased

and consistent information is delivered direct from Council to local residents in a timely and cost effective manner. Communication occurring between Council and the community via traditional media, websites, social media and community meetings all plays a part in increasing the amount of information delivered direct from Council to local residents. For its part, Council News will appear each week in The Weekend Advertiser, and Riverina Leader. It is also available from Council’s website at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/councilnews and readers can choose to subscribe to get it emailed direct each week.

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

The city’s newest animation wunderkinds have graduated from the first-ever Wagga Waggafest Winter School.

After a week-long workshop that involved plenty of fun, creativity and imagination, the students have the chance to submit their creations in this year’s Waggafest, which has the theme “the best is yet to come”.

Local animation wizards Alice Markham and John Oldroyd led the two sold-out classes, sharing their stop-motion animation secrets.

Ms Markham, a CSU honours student, said watching the kids’ stories come to life was a very rewarding experience.

“Because we’re doing stop-motion animation they bring in their own toys and they move it frame by frame to create their own little production,” she said.

“If they have their own characters or stuffed animals they could bring them in and use them in their story.”

From Lego that comes to life to colourful drawings scribbling their way across the screen, Winter School has been full of amazing stories for Ms Markham.

“There’s a few favourites,” she said. “There’s one where a little girl who has an ice cream and when she licks it she gets transformed into a world of cuteness where everything around is just adorable.

“It’s been really fun teaching them what I’ve learnt at CSU.”

Entries for this year’s short film competition close on August 30.

The iconic bunya pine in the Victory Memorial Gardens was removed this week following safety concerns.

The tree, which was believed to be planted between 1910 and 1920, has a significant lean in the upper part of the trunk.

Three independent arborists’ reports were conducted over the past six months before the decision to remove the tree.

It will be replaced with a Queensland kauri pine — a relative of the bunya.

A number of other trees around the CBD and in Lake Albert have also been removed recently due to safety concerns. FAREWELL: The significant lean on the bunya pine was even more noticeable as

arborists removed the outer limbs and branches

Meet JesseThis week’s pet of the week is

Jesse, an approximately one-year-old male kelpie.

This charming young fellow would suit a family with a large area of land and high, solid fences.

Jesse will make a perfect working dog, but is not suitable for living in town. He needs a family with plenty of time to exercise him.

Jesse can be adopted for $299.40, which would include vaccinations, desexing, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check.

You can meet Jesse and his furry friends at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, open Monday to Saturday from 1pm to 4.15pm.

For further information, contact the friendly Animal Management Rangers on 6971 4651or visit www.rescuerex.webs.com.

Phil PinyonGENERAL MANAGER

Thousands of residents filled the Victory Memorial Gardens for the Centenary of Anzac service this year and Wagga Wagga City Council last week made a special presentation to the local RSL Sub-Branch to mark the occasion.

The 2 May edition of Council News featured a photo taken from the top of the Historic Council Chambers, which captured the attention of the Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-Branch.

General Manager Phil Pinyon, Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes and Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor

Rod Kendall presented the Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-Branch with a framed copy of the photo.

Council also presented the Sub-Branch with a bronze plaque featuring the Ode to be installed at the Eternal Flame in the Victory Memorial Gardens.

RSL Sub-Branch president Kevin Kerr was thrilled with the photo and plaque.

“It’s a magnificent photo,” he said. “People mention something like 15,000 and outside of this photo they were down the street everywhere.

“With the plaque, people hear the Ode, but now they can take some time to reflect on it.”

HISTORIC OCCASION: Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-Branch (from left) secretary Ken May, vice-president Harry Edmonds, treasurer Brian Watts and president Kevin Kerr are presented with a framed photo marking Anzac Day in the city by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall, General Manager Phil Pinyon and Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes.
