Wagga Wagga Art Gallery marks 40 yearsFor the first few years after its launch in

1975, the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery was housed in the Historic Council Chambers on Baylis Street, which is now the home of the Museum of the Riverina.

In 1981, the Gallery relocated to a site on Gurwood Street, a renovated supermarket shared with the City Library.

That year also saw the first exhibition of art glass at the Gallery, which was the starting point of what is now the world-famous

National Art Glass Collection. Both the glass collection and the Gallery’s other major asset, the Margaret Carnegie Print Collection, have grown since those early days into one of the most significant art collections in regional NSW.

In 1999, the Gallery moved once again to its current location in the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre.

Designed by award-winning Melbourne architects Garner Davis, the Gallery’s new

home included a separate building specifically for glass, the National Art Glass Gallery.

Since 2007, the Gallery has established two exhibition spaces dedicated for local artists and community groups of the Riverina, the Links Gallery in the main building and the E3 art space by Wollundry Lagoon.

In 2010, the Gallery launched the National Student Art Glass Prize, aiming to support glass in the tertiary education sector across the country. The success of this prize, which

has returned every two years in 2012 and 2014, has strengthened Wagga’s place as a centre of glass as an artform in Australia.

This key role has been underlined by the National Ausglass Conference, which was held in Wagga in 1999 when the new building opened and more recently in 2013.

Wagga is the only regional centre in Australia, outside the capital cities, ever to have hosted this major international event.

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is the home of the National Art Glass Collection, the largest in the country.

More than 500 items are held in this collection, which acquired its title of national significance in 1992.

In the late 1970s, Wagga was one of the first places in Australia where glass was taught. John Elsegood established a hot glass teaching studio at the Riverina College of Advanced Education in 1978 after earlier visits from international glass artists.

Judy Le Lievre, the first full-time director of the Gallery, had studied with John Elsegood and her enthusiasm for glass led to the first national exhibition of contemporary glass by Australian artists in 1981. Works acquired from this exhibition were the first pieces in what has become the National Art Glass Collection.

Further major survey exhibitions followed throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and the collection continued to grow. With the opening of the National Art Glass Gallery in 1999, the collection has a permanent home and can be visited throughout the year.

Australia’s largest glass collection

In 1980, Holbrook-based collector and patron of the arts Margaret Carnegie AO OAM donated more than 120 prints by modern Australian artists to the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

This donation formed the foundation of what is now one of the largest collections of prints in regional Australia, with more than 1500 artworks.

In recognition of Mrs Carnegie’s generosity and support this is now the Margaret Carnegie Print Collection, and one of the Gallery’s exhibition spaces is also named in her honour.

Prints from this collection are exhibited throughout the year and have also toured nationally to other galleries and museums across the country.

Over recent weeks Wagga Wagga has been treated to a number of high profile sporting events, and the community has embraced

them enthusiastically.I for one, as a cricket tragic,

particularly took advantage of the NSW versus Victoria Sheffield Shield match at Robertson Oval, as I did when we were treated to the women’s state teams last year. I was very excited to see top class players compete in my home town.

In addition to the spectacle, these events have been built around encouraging

participation in an active and healthy community. While watching the cricket it was good to see young girls and boys being active by taking the opportunity to set up impromptu cricket games around the ground.

The Sheffield Shield match was also the backdrop for the naming of new practice nets after Warren Smith, who has dedicated a large part of his life to ensuring that

kids in our community can enjoy the sport and become the best they can be at it. People like Warren deserve to be recognised for the contribution they make, and there are many of them in our community.

People who build opportunities for us all to enjoy a rich, happy, active and healthy life. Opportunities to be physically active, culturally engaged

and to enjoy our natural environment.

Council supports these people and opportunities where we can because we know these things are important to individuals, and important to the growth of our community. They are also a contributing factor to the economic growth of our city as they make it attractive for businesses and professions to relocate here.

Roads rates and rubbish are an important core aspect of Council’s work, but we must also ensure we build a balanced community that is active, healthy and engaged. After all it does us no good if we have the best roads in the country but they only lead out of town.

It’s all about balance.Councillor Kevin Poynter

This week’s pet of the week is a tan/white male basset hound called Barry.

Barry is about four years old and is an obedient and well-mannered dog. He is very relaxed around people and other animals and would suit a more mature family.

You can adopt Barry from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter for $291.18, which includes microchipping, lifetime registration, vaccination, desexing, worming, heartworm test and a vet check.

If you would like to meet Barry, or any of the other animals at the shelter, visit between 1pm and 4.15pm from Monday to Saturday.

The friendly Animal Management Rangers can be contacted on 6971 4651 during business hours.

Tip of the week: If your dog defecates in a public place, it is your responsibility to correctly dispose of it. Penalty notices of $275 can be issued for non-compliance.

Grants program open for 2015-16Applications for a share of $175,000 as part

of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Annual Grants Program open on Monday 16 March.

The funding project was launched on 11 March at Riding for the Disabled, which benefited from a $1650 grant to replace riding boots and helmets as part of the 2014-15 program.

“Through the grants program, Council supports a wide range of services and activities that build community capacity, foster social networks and information exchange, facilitate cooperation and build on existing community strengths,” Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said.

Councillor Kevin Poynter helped launch the 2015-16 program and was thrilled to see the impact the grant had made at Riding for the Disabled.

“I’m proud to say that the grants program has been the catalyst for some fantastic projects over the past several years, evident here at Riding for the Disabled where Council’s grants program will significantly assist in the replacement of riding boots and helmets,” he said.

“The annual grants program provides an

outstanding opportunity across areas such as sport, infrastructure, promotion, arts, neighbourhood development and support to rural villages.”

Applications are open from Monday 16 March until at 11.59pm, Sunday 31 May.

Application forms and grants guidelines will be available at upcoming information/grant writing workshops, at Wagga Wagga City Council customer service and online at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/grants.

Three more community information sessions will be held this week to give residents and businesses across the Local Government Area an update on flood management.

The meetings will feature information about the detailed

design process of the Main City and North Wagga levees and about alternative flood management options for North Wagga.

“Flood Management is something that affects us all,” Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said.

“The community will get the chance to hear about the Main City levee and options for the North Wagga levee.

“We live and work on a floodplain and this is the next step in a long-term conversation with the community about flood management.”

WHAT IS IT? Class 3 noxious weed – regionally controlled weed.WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? It is a long lived summer active perennial that produces short rhizomes that form a dense grass tussock. It grows to 1.5m, has greyish-green leaves and the seed head has a very distinct Y formation or “rabbit ears” shape.WHERE IS IT FOUND? The weed grows in sandy to

loamy soils during spring and after rain in summer. Commonly seen along roadsides, rail corridors and disturbed bushland.HOW IS IT SPREAD? It reproduces through quick maturing light seeds, which can be spread by passing vehicles, slashing and natural elements.WHAT CAN I DO? Isolating and/or reducing movement through infested areas is

essential. In late autumn/winter, tussocks can be reduced by burning or slashing followed by herbicides.
