“Average cases per day across our local authority areas have doubled in lit-tle more than a week and are averaging around 80 per day in the most recent figures – we expect that to go higher in coming days.

“Social distancing is still the best defence we

have, along with washing hands for 20 seconds and covering our faces when we are asked and required to do so.

“Our Public Health teams have been work-ing tirelessly to track and trace every case but there have been a number of incidents over the last few days which make this task even more difficult.

“People who have symp-toms or are asked to do so by the Health Protec-tion teams must book a test and self-isolate until they have their results.

“If you are asked to self-isolate, it is really important that you do so whatever your test status at the time.

“We have seen cases where individuals with symptoms have had a test, then gone out and infected others before getting their results – reckless and selfish behaviour.

“Failure to do so will leave us with no alterna-tive than to shut those premises down.

“A significant minor-ity believe it is OK to have house parties, hold events with unregulated crowds, ignore the rules – well it isn’t.

“Household transmis-sion remains the biggest danger. By not follow-ing the guidance, advice

and legislation you are at greater risk of spread-ing the virus to your own family, which as we have seen can lead to tragic consequences.

“None of us yet know the long-term health impact of Covid 19, while the full social and economic con-sequences are also yet to play out.

In the lead-up to Dur-ham Book Festival, which runs 9th-18th October, 4,000 copies of Written in Blood funded by Ann’s publisher Pan Macmil-lan, will be distributed by Durham County Council through a wide network.

The books will be avail-able from libraries, com-munity hubs, food banks and local businesses, as well as within the prison library service.

A grant from the County Durham Commu-nity Foundation will fund shared reading work-shops themed around the book in community groups.

As well as picking up physical copies of Writ-ten in Blood, readers can also download a free e-book version from the Durham Book Festival website.

Ann Cleeves will be

interviewed by broad-caster Steph McGovern for a digital book festival event, to be broadcast on Saturday 17th October.

They will talk about Ann’s award-winning career; how books have supported her in her own life; and why she feels reading is so vital to mental health.

Free tickets to watch the event online will be available from Thursday 10th September, when the full Durham Book Festival programme is made live at durham-bookfestival.com.

The Big Read is a long-running campaign at Durham Book Festival which celebrates the joy of reading.

Previous titles have included Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín, The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters and Northern Lights by Philip Pullman.

Each year, thousands of books are gifted to peo-ple from across County Durham, inviting them to

read for pleasure and be part of a shared moment for the county.

Claire Malcolm, Chief Executive of New Writ-ing North said: “The Big Read is a very special part of our programme where we invite everyone to join us in reading one special book.

“For many of us, read-ing is the most amazing passport to escapism: it costs nothing and offers complete freedom. Never have we needed books more!

“The Big Read is also a celebration of librar-ies at the heart of their communities and as the places where many of us discover we are readers.

“At a time when so many of us are feeling stressed and anxious due to Covid-19, we are thrilled to be working with Ann Cleeves, who is not only a fantastic writer, but has also ded-icated her career to sup-porting reading in librar-ies and the community to

bring us joy and support mental health.”

Ann Cleeves said: “I’m delighted to be taking part in Durham Festival’s Big Read, and that Writ-ten in Blood will go wild into the community for everyone to enjoy.

“In this short story, Vera is very much out of her comfort zone, advis-ing aspiring writers as part of the Durham Book Festival.

“Reading fiction is a good way to lose your-self, I hope people enjoy a moment to escape into the world of Vera Stan-hope!”

Cllr Joy Allen, Durham County Council’s Cab-inet member for trans-formation, culture and tourism, said: “The Big Read is one of the most popular parts of Durham Book Festival, as it effec-tively turns County Dur-ham into one big book club, with thousands of people all reading and talking about the same novel at once.”

Our Heroes NHSWritten in March 2020 by Clive Stokes

At that start of 2020There came a killer Bug

That meant we couldn’t see our friendsAnd stopped us giving our Mams a hug

We, like other countries thought It would not travel to our shore

But it did and killed a thousand people And then a thousand more

By then it was too lateAs this virus quickly spread

It was clear this wasn’t going awayTill thousands more were dead

We were told to observe social distancingAnd only in emergency to go outA rule put in place to keep us safeA rule people thought they’d flout

Our country was being attacked By an invisible killing force

Wiping a lot of our population outAnd didn’t show remorse

This was branded like the plagueThe likes that we have never seen

We were told that if we handled stuff Our hands we had to clean

The prime minister, Boris JohnsonHad to give a public address

For us to stay at home, save livesAnd protect our NHS

Then footage came on the tellyOf the nurses who had cried

For their colleagues trying to help us allAnd for their vocation they had died

We’ve got lots of pride for our NHSRight across our nation

So at 8 o’clock on Thursday nightsWe show our appreciation

We go outside, clap our handsOr bang our pans so loud

To let all the doctors and nurses knowOf them we are so proud

Thank you NHS

this time including Cllr Crathorne, Harvey Neve and the Parish Coun-cil, Bishop Middleham Parish Horticultural and Crafts Society, and the Thompsons family.

“We have worked extremely hard to get this project finished on time and on budget in extraordinary circum-stances, and appreciate everyone’s help at this time, especially to Jane Brownlee who project managed the kitchen.

Andrew Clements of the Horticultural Show commented: “Just a

quick note to thank you all, plus others drafted in to help, to make the 2020 show, in my opinion, a complete success.

Even with restric-tions due to Covid-19, everything went to plan and was very well con-trolled.

“All attending seemed to enjoy all of the exhib-its, which exceeded the number that I had expected. A big thank you to all who entered exhibits.

“There were many com-plements from those viewing.”

ON SATURDAY 5th September, as part of their 36th Annual Show, Bishop Middleham Vil-lage Hall was re-opened following its long closure during lockdown.

Organisers also held an official opening of their newly refurbished kitchen facilities, gen-erously funded by Cllr Crathorne and Thomp-sons of Prudhoe.

A spokesperson said: “We would like to thank everyone for their sup-port over these times, supporting us financially and personally through

assaults against officers and staff, and the severity of them.

As a result, a package of 28 recommendations has been approved by chief constables, with the aim of enhancing the safety of frontline officers and staff.

Some of the recommen-dations include an over-haul of safety training; reviewing the availability of equipment; new tech-nology being trialled and a hard-line approach to the standard of response after an assault.

Chief Constable Jo Far-rell, from Durham Con-stabulary, said: “Attacks on police officers and staff are unacceptable at any time, but they are especially appalling when these officers have worked tirelessly on the frontline to keep people safe during the Coronavi-rus pandemic.

“Our officers put their own lives on the line for the public every single day and assaults should never be seen as part of the job.

“Police officers are human beings who have

every right to return home safely at the end of each shift.

“Attacks on officers not only have physical consequences, but can leave them with long-term psychological damage which is also often felt by their loved ones and col-leagues.”

She added: “We need to ensure our officers have the very best tools, train-ing and support that they need to protect the public and protect themselves.

“That is why we have continued to make sure our officers receive vital training throughout the pandemic, all while tak-ing precautions to remain Covid-compliant.

“Policing is a hugely rewarding career, and our officers and staff join knowing that they will have to face some potentially dangerous sit-uations.

“We welcome and sup-port the recommenda-tions and changes set out in the review, and will be working through them to implement them in County Durham and Dar-lington.”

ASSAULTS ON police officers and staff in County Durham and Dar-lington increased during the lockdown period, fig-ures have revealed.

Durham Constabulary recorded 228 assaults on officers and staff between March and July this year – an increase of 26% when compared with the same period last year, in which 168 assaults were recorded.

A number of these assaults included inci-dents in which suspects have spat or coughed in officers’ faces and claimed they had Corona-virus.

Others include incidents where officers have been punched, kicked, head-butted, scratched, bit-ten or had glass bottles thrown at them.

The figures come as the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and Col-lege of Policing publish their Officer and Staff Safety Review, following the largest ever survey of police workforce.

The urgent review was undertaken following sig-nificant concern about
