OAA Concludes Positive Meeting overConstruction Lien Act As part of the ongoing Construction Lien Act Review, the OAAwas identified as a key stakeholder for discussions with BruceReynolds and Sharon Vogel of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP,
counsel retained to lead the review on behalf of the Ministry ofthe Attorney General. The OAA, led by President Toon Dreessen, entered a formalsubmission and delivered a presentation during an inpersonmeeting last Friday, underlining the unique role of architects andstressing the need for specific consideration in reform of thelegislation. The parties discussed that the original legislation waswritten without taking architects into account, and that theprofession had been “shoehorned” into a onesizefitsallapproach that largely does not fit our set of circumstances. The OAA was encouraged by the positive dialogue and looksforward to monitoring the next stages of the review. While thefinal report and recommendations were originally slated forDecember 2015, the growing volume of stakeholders and issueswill likely delay the report until March 2016. To see the OAA’s submission, please select the ‘CLA’ tag on theGovernment Relations portal.
Government Relations
Letter to Prime Minister, Re: ChampioningArchitecture Following the federal election, OAA President Toon Dreessensent letters to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the new Ministerof Canadian Heritage, Mélanie Joly. The letter asked for the Prime Minister to become “a champion ofthe Canadian architectural profession both at home and abroad”,showcasing some key issues for the profession, and stressing theOntario government’s commitment to better integrate architectsinto all aspects of infrastructure delivery (the Infrastructure forJobs and Prosperity Act). The more targeted letter to MinisterJoly focused on the 24 Sussex debate, and on the relocation ofthe Memorial to the Victims of Communism. To read either of these letters, please select the ‘Federal’ tag onthe Government Relations Portal.
Speak up about ‘ARCHITECTURE’
Feedback Wanted: Ontario’s New CultureStrategy
The Province of Ontario is developing the first ever culturestrategy for the province. The OAA has read through thediscussion paper and is disappointed that the word architecture isnot even mentioned, only referenced as built heritage andlandscape. We believe this view to be rather limiting, failing torecognize our profession as both culture, and a significantgenerator of Ontario’s culture through the spaces we create. The OAA is currently preparing a response to the discussionpaper, but also wants to encourage you to participate in thepublic consultation process. Deadline to provide feedback isDecember 8, 2015.
