ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE

Christmas time is for family, friends, and festivities. It is also a time

to be thankful for all our blessings and to help those less fortunate. I am

very proud of the Clavet students’ initiatives to lend a helping hand this

Christmas.

SEASONS GREEETINGS!

HOLIDAY REMINDER If your child will be away from school for a period of 5 days or longer, an Extended

Period of Absence Form must be filled out. Teachers will fill out this form with

homework, exams, and assignments that will be missed. The form is then signed by a

parent and returned to the office.

REMINDER Please remember to keep your family contact information up to date especially as

we are heading into the winter weather season.

PHONE SERVICE When there is a power outage or an interruption of our internet service, unfortunately we also lose

our phones.

2014-2015 YEARBOOKS

The 2014 Yearbook have arrived! If you didn't purchase one but

would like to, we will have extra copies at $42 each. See Mrs.

Shabatoski or stop in at the office! Don't miss out on the memories

of 2013 captured in the Yearbook!

REMINDERS FOR ALL BUSED STUDENTS - (both in-town and rural)

Students must be at their bus stop by the pre-determined pick up time. At each bus stop, bus

drivers will wait for two minutes before continuing on their routes. Drivers cannot wait any

longer without disrupting other pick up times along their routes.

At the end of the day, the bus will leave the school five minutes after the bell. Students need

to make their way directly to the bus.

BUS CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

There is now a Bus Hotline 306-683-2805 that parents can call

to hear if there are any buses that are not running . All bus cancellations

are prominently posted on the Prairie Spirit website (www.spiritsd.ca) by 7 a.m. each

school day. Parents can also listen to FM radio stations The Bull 92.9 and C95 and AM

stations CKOM NTR 650 and 600 CJWW for announcements of cancellations. Only rural

busing students will be called by their bus driver in the event of a cancellation; in-town

busing students must consult the website or call the hotline for cancellation notices.

COUGAR NEWS COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES Clavet has established the following temperatures as a guideline for winter recess times. We

would like all students to be dressed properly (jackets, ski- pants, toque, mitts, scarves,

boots) as we go outside as much as possible. Many students ask to go outside even when

temperatures dip low. For this reason we have established the Polar Bear Club. Please note,

the temperatures are based on Environment Canada for Saskatoon.

NO MORE HOTDOGS Clavet School is working with representatives from the Health Region to

develop a Nutrition Policy for the school. We are very pleased with the

work of the students and the staff on the Healthy Promoting Schools

initiatives that have been undertaken over the last number of years, but

there are still some areas that we would like to address.

1. The first of these is our hot dog sales. It is difficult for us to control the salt

content in the hotdogs that we provide. A healthier option that has been suggested is

to provide whole wheat pasta with low sodium sauce. Beginning in January, all

scheduled hot dog days will be replaced with pasta days. We will run the pasta

days as we have in the past. Students will be expected to bring their own plate/bowl

and spoon/fork. We will have serving stations set up in the halls where our volunteers

will serve the pasta and sauce.

2. Although we switched to a healthy option vendor for our hall machine, it appears as

though some of the options have regressed to choices that our new policy definitely

wouldn’t support. We will work with our vendor to regain the healthy balance we were

after.

3. Although we have never sold energy drinks at the school, we still find a number of

students consuming them here. We are working on an aspect of our overall nutrition

policy that will ban them from the property.

4. We are looking at some other healthy options for our monthly pizza lunches. We will

keep you informed as introduce theses throughout the remainder of the year.

Thanks for your support as we continue to healthy, nutritious options for our students. We

know that well-nourished students are more likely to achieve their academic potential,

maximize their physical and mental growth, and achieve lifelong health and well-being.

Polar Bear Club – only those dressed properly will have the option to

COMMUNITY NEWS ~

We are now accepting applications for SUBSTITUTE CARETAKING help. In order to

maintain our school building to the highest possible standard, we require

substitute caretaking help in our school. If you are interested in working on a

casual basis, please contact Brian Matisz, Principal at 306-933-1022 or Randy

Willms, Caretaking Supervisor at 306-683-2916, as soon as possible for more

information. Students, parents and community members are welcome to apply.

The Spread the Warmth Fundraiser will be selling Tube handwarmers at both

performances of the Christmas concert on December 15th

including a limited number of Cougar Tubes. Visit the

school website to check out selection and order yours ahead

of time. They can also be purchased at the Clavet

convenience store and Clavet Service –Auto Select. All

proceeds go towards the enhancement of the Clavet school

ATTENTION ALL SOCCER FAMILIES: I am still in need of someone to take over Clavet Soccer. I would like someone in place by

January.

There is not a lot of work to this job, taking registrations and entering

the teams online.

I would also like former soccer families to look for any equipment and

uniforms they have and return them ASAP.

If there is any girls interested in Under 12 soccer this year, please let

me know. I would like to find out soon because if

we do not have a team, the girls can register in the city with a team. This would apply to girls

born in 2004 and 2005.

Grade 5/6 Learn to Play Volleyball We have a new opportunity for grade 5 and 6 students in the community to learn

to play volleyball. Interested students can sign up for 8 sessions to be held at

Clavet School on Sundays from 11:00 to 12:30, beginning January 10th (no session

February 14th). The focus of the sessions will be on basic skill development and

fun lead-up games to full game-type simulations of volleyball. The progression will be similar

to the Atomic Volleyball program developed by Volleyball Canada. No previous experience is

expected. Participants will receive a Clavet Volleyball T-shirt and some great instruction as

an introduction to the game at a cost of $60 for the 8 sessions. Please contact Brian Matisz

2015 SRC Christmas Banquet

Dear parents of students grades 7 – 12,

Friday, December 18th is our annual Christmas banquet. Each student has

been asked to bring a specific item to help with the lunch. If you are not sure

what your child needs to bring please ask their homeroom teacher. We would

also like to ask for you to send your items Friday morning. Unfortunately, we

do not have enough space to store these items if they are brought earlier

than Friday. Thank you so much for your generosity and support for this holiday

event!

Tis the season to be Healthy…

The Nutrition program hosted an entire school red and green veggie day in December sponsored by Breakfast For Learning. The veggies were prepared by the Grade 7 class and served by student volunteers from Grades 5 and 7 to all grades.

Another Healthy Year 2015 has been an outstanding year with great student participation and fantastic support from our corporate sponsors, especially the Stonebridge CO-OP with their regular support of our program with fresh fruits and dairy products. The grade 2 class, and their mascot Twitter the Rabbit, created a thank-you poster this month. We are all looking forward to a great start to the 2016 New Year.
