REDEFINING EXCELLENCE

Dear Cougar Supporters,

Competing at an NCAA Division I institution, SIUE student-athletes have the opportunity to participate at the highest level, not just academically, but also athletically. As we continue to provide an increasing number of opportunities for our student-athletes to enhance their education, represent theUniversity and participate in competition, we are inviting alumni, community members and fans to stand behind the team and help drive the success of Cougar Athletics.

Faced with increasing operational costs and economic uncertainties, we must be prudent with how we manage our resources. To that end, the department strives to identify private

funding sources that provide for student-athlete needs, which can’t be met through normal budgetary processes. By making a contribution to the Cougar Excellence Fund, you allow us to continue investing in the lives of the young student-athletes at SIUE. Following the tradition of those who walked the SIUE path before them. Alumni featured

within this booklet have gone on to become a member of Team USA, President at one of the region’s largest housing units and a successful entrepreneur and CEO of multiple domestic and international companies. As we move forward in our pursuit of excellence on and off the field, I invite you to consider making a contribution to the Cougar

Excellence Fund. Your gift allows us to redefine and grow our culture of excellence within the Division I community and build an

environment for champions to succeed. You can make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes and our athletics program.

Thank you and Go Cougars!

“By making a contribution to the Cougar Excellence Fund, you allow us tocontinue investing in the lives of the young student-athletes at SIUE.”

-Bradley Hewitt, PhD

While support comes from all corners of the world, more donors come from Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Indiana than from

any other state.

Page 4: Cougar Excellence Fund

SIUE student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters are redefining excellence by displaying the qualities that come from hard work, knowledge, determination, and the pride in the University and community.

The traits encompassed in the people surrounding SIUE Intercollegiate Athleticsexude excellence, the quality of being outstanding. This, in turn, makes excellence a synonym for the SIUE athletics programs.

Be part of the Cougar Excellence Fund, be part of excellence.

“Excellence means giving your all and striving to be consistent with your play, both mentally and physically each and every time you step on the court. Off the court, it is the same principle of trying to do your best at all times and giving your all in the classroom and out in the community.”-Tierny Austin

The SIUE Way.SIUE TEAM MEMBERS:SIUE staff, coaches and student-athletes start everyday knowing that what happens that day, and each day after, shapes the outcome of EXCELLENCE.

-Demonstrate daily an enthusiastic commitment and dedication to the organizational mission.

-Strive daily for progress and improvement (with the highest ethical standards).

-Compete their hardest in every game, match, etc., but always maintain civility, win or lose.

-Acknowledge accountability for their actions and their teammates’ actions.

-Command their emotions and channel their energy into constructive performances.

-Recognize the reality of public perception and how their actions can influence that perception.

-Achieve great results, regardless of resources provided.

-Believe that the organization and the team are larger than any one person, and that success will come as a team, not as individuals.

-Embrace their defined roles.

-Regard their collective role as “just” a chapter in a larger journal—one that will tell the story of a great University.

REFER A NEW MEMBERRefer a new member to the Cougar Excellence Fund to receive more benefits. Receive an official Team Adidas wearable for each referral in the Cougar Circle or Pride level. Get an “e” charm or cuff links in addition to the official Team Adidas wearable when you refer a member at the Champion level or higher.

“I closely relate excellence to the word “greatness.” Traveling to different schools or even walking around campus with a positive attitude and a humble demeanor allows for a ‘great personality.’ Trying your hardest in the classroom and on the field provides you with ‘great opportunities.’ Being productive and staying focused puts into perspective all of the ‘great achievements’ that are within reach. These three important factors are what excellence means to me”- Samantha Jones

“It is important for all alumni to continue donating to improve the quality and competitiveness of our athletic programs, to show our student-athletes we are here for them, and to provide the resources to help them achieve at the highest level.”
