making it something very airy and light. We decided to call it “Bae-watch” based on our B.A.E. Lillie and base it off of her years in water polo and her future in the sport. With her injury threatening her chances at playing in college, we documented her journey from last season to the current season and the ways she plans to stay strong and keep her eyes on the ball.

ory Burch has created an American brand that’s both aspirational and attainable, and she has become a

billionaire in the process. In the 10 years since she started her business, she has opened stores around the world, most recently in Shanghai, launched a fragrance, dressed tastemakers in the White House, in Hollywood and beyond and formed the Tory Burch Foundation to support female entrepreneurship.And she’s done it all by telling a story through color.A new book, “Tory Burch: In Color” (Abrams), brings read-ers into her world through 11 color-themed sections. The cover displays the Damien Hirst spin artwork “Beautiful, Primal Urges Rug,” which he gave Burch permission to use free of charge because all the proceeds of her book’s sales go to benefit her foundation.The book is social media come to the printed page, with images of favorite artworks (by Richard Diebenkorn, Agnes Martin, Henri Matisse), family and travel snapshots, along with table settings and Billy Baldwin interiors from Burch’s lavish homes in Manhat-tan and Southampton. Inter-spersed throughout are snippets of poetry, playlists, recipes and tips from accomplished people including model-entrepreneur Liya Kebede and Hillary Rodham Clinton.“I didn’t want to do a fashion book, as in, ‘wear this with that,’” Burch said over coffee in Beverly Hills last week. “We started on a chapter book instead, and it wasn’t working, so one day, I took all the pictures and threw them on the floor and started sorting them by color. Suddenly, it came to life.”The book begins with orange, which was the brand’s signature from the beginning and is still a motif in store design, packaging

and the new Tory Burch Watch-es, created in collaboration with Fossil. Orange is the color of the library where Burch spends most of her time in her apartment. On another page, there’s an image of an orange Rothko painting, then a photo of the designer and her son, Sawyer, holding giant orange starfish while on vacation in the Bahamas, then a runway shot of a model in an orange block print dress from one of Burch’s collections.Together, all the images function as an inspiration board, showing how designers accumulate ideas and influences and translate them into a collection.Burch also shares the specifics of how she started at the kitchen table and how she got the idea for her famous tunic top from a vin-tage piece she found at a Paris flea market. Her big break came when she appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2005, after the media mogul received a Tory tunic from a friend as a Christmas gift and fell in love with it. A week after that TV appearance, Burch had 8 million hits on her website.The book also showcas-es Burch’s lifestyle, just as her brand is expand-ing into that arena, with the first Tory Burch dinnerware and table linens in stores now. At home, Burch has a penchant for mixing unexpected elements _ blue Mexican pottery with Turkish table linens, for example.And she has a passion for collecting green lettuce ware pottery by Dodie Thayer, the Florida-based crafts-woman whose work was a favorite of 20th century society icons

eccentricity, individuality and self-identity; all factors which drive personal style. Students who dye their hair a noticeable color, or wear one color every single day dress in a different manner that makes their personality and creativity the root of every look. Labeled as crazy, strange and a little wacky, these students hide themselves from no one. But senior William Joseph one of these eccentric students said having so many people notice his style makes him appear intimidating. “Of course it’s about attention; you want people to notice you,” Joseph said. “A lot of times people don’t understand so of course they’re afraid or intimidated by things they don’t get.” In order to tackle other’s intimidation, students must have confidence. Confidence gives them edg-iness and an expressive platform to do what they want with how they present themselves to others. Senior Helanna Salinas said the way she dresses makes her feel confident. “People say that they’re afraid to walk up to me because they think I’m super stuck up, but no, I’m really sweet,” she said. “I think that I’m well round-ed with my clothing. My clothing says that I’m different and unique and I know I get a lot of stares sometimes. I don’t care what people think.” Helanna’s younger sister sophomore Dominique Salinas said she does not care what people think about her personal style. “I look up to my sister when it comes to style,” Dominique Salinas said. “My favorite thing about my sister’s style is that she does

what she wan—doesn’t care what people think and she can pull it off [and] I want my style to say I dress for myself.” Having eccentric style means having an eccen-tric style muse. On a small scale, students only present themselves to their peers, but they often take inspiration from someone with a much larger audience. “There’s always Kanye, there’s always A$AP Rocky,” Joseph said. “I try to infuse [their style] with my own. If you’re looking for high-end fashion, the best time is now [with people like] Maison Martin Margiela, but if you’re looking at street style I’d say late 80s, early 90s. [Like] Jor-dans, retro Jordans they all came out at the same time and Timberland boots. It’s all stuff that we

borrowed, but the root is still from that area.”Similarly, Helanna Salinas also takes style tips from others.“I love the creative director of American Appar-el,” she said. “Everything varies in my fashion. I love fall clothing. I love Doc Martins and knee high socks.”In order to create a divergence from their peers Helanna and Dominique Salinas and Joseph all look up to others who have created a message out of their personal style before them. They have little fear in looking different —they strive for individuality and to set themselves a part from others. “I take pride in wanting to be different,” Joseph said. “I hold [that] higher than anything else.”

riday night around 8:00 p.m. the players jog off and the show starts. The field remains empty for just a moment until the faint cry of a whistle surfaces, followed by the light trot of field boots. They sparkle, twirl, kick and without missing a beat the shimmering reflection of a smile as far as those inside the press box can see stretches across the faces of the girls decked out in blue.

Embodying the grace and technique of trained dancers and the persistence and dedication of army cadets, this select group of girls rise as one of of the most involved groups on campus. But little do onlookers know the journey that takes place in getting from the 6:00 a.m. weekly practices to the well-lit stadium. Welcome to the day in the life of a silvie.

FMONDAY: “THE KEY TO PERFORMING IS PROJECTION.”4:50 a.m. The alarm goes off. Senior Colonel Rachel Johnson wakes up and by 5:45 a.m. she arrives to the school parking lot. By 6:00 a.m. practice initiates, directors Christy Groschke and Ryan Garcia give instructions in the high tower, the girls stand in formation, while Johnson makes sure everyone stays in line.

“It’s pretty awesome because I get to lead the team and I think that’s a pretty cool learning experience,” Johnson said. “Ever since I was younger and went to the games and watched silvies perform, I knew I always wanted to be a silvie.”Armed with a whistle and confidence, Johnson leads the team on the field to perform a half time show hours of practice and motivation created. “The key to performing is projection so we always make sure we are looking at the top of the stadium so that they see our faces instead of our heads and our smiles,” Johnson said.

After hitting the pavement of the parking lot morning after morning, senior Lieutenant Colonel Amy Weinberg starts her day.

TUESDAY: “YOU JUST HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE YOUR PROBLEMS AT THE DOOR FOR YOUR TEAM AND FOR YOUR DIRECTORS.”

“You definitely have to be very dedicated because we have practices every day and football games every week,” she said. “You have to be very hardworking, especially with those morning practices because it can be a little rough.”Though Weinberg noted balancing both a rigorous course load and carving out eight hours a week for practice challenges time, Silvies remains a labor of love she fully commits to. “You really just have to give it your all and even if you have an off day,” she said. “You just have to make sure you leave your problems at the door for your team and for your directors.”Years of dance earned Weinberg a spot on Silvies and allowed her to sustain a legacy for generations to come. “Well I’ve been taking dance classes since I was four and the whole time I wanted to be a silvie once I got to high school,” Weinberg said. “Freshman year was crazy, I had been watching the silvies for forever and it was crazy thinking I was one of them.”

WEDNESDAY: “IT’S LIKE A SISTERHOOD, SO YOU HAVE TO BE THERE FOR YOUR SISTERS.”Waking up early. Driving to school. Getting ready for practice. Sitting in the locker room for for roll call. Senior Captain Tessa Bloomberg moves to a beat when it comes to her life as a Silvie. “I get to school by 5:45 and I wait until 5:50 for them to open the doors,” she said. “We have practice and we move gyms because we always get kicked out of a gym, then we go to the cafeteria.”The beat continues. Bloomberg easily relives the pace and intensity

of morning practices.“You’re in your formation depending on what formation your directors want you to be in there,” she said. “Usually up on the top tower. You’re standing around a whole bunch of girls and they tell you ‘Okay, this is what we want you to do and you do it.’ And you typically run in through music a couple times and the ground is marked off so you always know where to be and what to be doing so there are always clear cut instructions.”As captain, Bloomberg treats Silvies as a top priority in her schedule. “You have to have passion and be really dedicated,” she said. “It’s like a sisterhood, so you have to be there for your sisters.”

THURSDAY: “[SILVIES] MUST BE EXTREMELY HARD WORKING AND PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND THEY MUST LOVE IT A LOT.”As football season gradually meets an end, senior Lieutenant Colonel Blakely Hill said in order to have success on the field, Silvies must constantly smile and never let their nerves show. “It’s really fun, except you’re kind of nervous before you perform,” Hill said. “There are a lot of people and you just don’t want to mess up or forget. Just try to have fun with [the crowd] and be excited to be in front of an audience and share what you want to do.”After years of dance and dedication to her sport, Hill received her officer position her sophomore year. “I was always attending things, and I also got a lot of merits,”

she said. “I wanted to be a Silvie since I started watching them in kindergarten, I went to Silvie Clinic that year.”After three years as a Silvie, Hill said her favorite memories were on the field.“The most memorable moment is performing during halftime and being an officer and getting to do championship,” she said.

FRIDAY: “WE PRAY AND MAKE SURE NO ONE GETS HURT. WE PRAY EVERYTHING GOES SMOOTHLY.” Gameday jitters fill the dance room to the brim and once again as 8:00 p.m. rolls around. Show time. “We circle up before getting on the field and we pray and make sure no one gets hurt. We pray everything goes smoothly,” Bloomberg said. “Our main priority is that no one gets hurt.” They hear the applause, they see everyone who showed up to see them and the players put on Friday night’s finest performance. “It’s amazing. You see the lights, you see the crowd,” Weinberg said. “You know you’re walking out with 60 of your best friends, and you know that everyone there is just so proud of you. It’s really cool.”Hard work and dedication got them here, and now the Silvies deliver a performance celebrating the positive qualities and spirit they bring every day. “Silvies has taught me dedication overall, because you have to be willing to smile and give it your all,” Weinberg said. “ It was just a really proud moment to be there with my team and to feel like I was really part of something.”

SENIOR LILLIE HAVENS SHARES A STORY ABOUT OVERCOMING AN INJURY THAT MAY AFFECT HER FUTURE IN WATER POLO.

A pattern senior Lillie Havens lives by, aided by last season persistence, hard work and a water-centric lifestyle unlocked the key that lead her and the team to success placing second at the State Championship, but for Havens, the road to state came with a price. “It was such a huge accomplishment,” Havens said. “It’s my favorite memory.”School, water polo, sleep. School, water polo, sleep. The rhythm Havens continues to move to, engraved in her memory since the age of seven. Havens’ water polo career spans over 11 years. “At this point the water is pretty much my sec-ond home; I’m in the water every single day. I’m comfortable in it; it’s kind of a free feeling,” she said. “While you’re swimming, it’s calming and you have a lot of time to yourself because you can’t hear anyone else underwater. It’s just you and your thoughts.” School, water polo, sleep. School, water polo, sleep. School, water polo, sleep.Nothing changes, nothing gets in the way of Havens reaching her goal: playing water polo at a Division I school. In the water, she focuses on the game, drowns out the sound of the referees whistling, of the coaches yelling; she doesn’t even notice the crowd. With her nerves raging she plays in the set position while her opponent holds her arm behind her, Havens continues to wrestle for the ball. Until she hears a snap, and a look of anguish and pain flash across her face. “As soon as my arm was pulled out of socket I obviously knew something was wrong but I had a horrible feeling that it was way worse than just a dislocated shoulder,” Havens said. “I couldn’t even get out of the water. My coach had to pull me out of by the strap of my swimsuit.”

“WATER POLO HAS HELPED ME A LOT THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL, IT GIVES ME MOTIVATION TO WORK HARDER IN SCHOOL AND GET BETTER GRADES TO STAY ELIGIBLE, AND IT HAS TAUGHT ME TO BE PATIENT WITH OTHERS.

“ nfortunately, Havens’ intuition seemed correct. Right on the brink of Regionals, she tore her labrum, spraining her rotator cuff in her right shoulder. Though Havens suffered a great deal of pain the team’s success

at state clouded her thoughts. “My injury is now the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with concerning water polo,” she said. “I was in so much pain I immediately thought that I wouldn’t be able to play in state and that I was going to let my team down. Thank god I throw with my left arm.” Though she currently needs a Bankart Repair surgery, a pulled out socket did not disable Havens from playing, she continued to defy her injury in order to lead her team to victory. “My coach and I are going to try to strengthen my shoulder throughout the year with exercises before the season starts so it’ll give me a better chance of making it through season,”she said. “Hopefully I will not be sitting out this season considering as a student at Cy Creek it will be my last” School, water polo, sleep. Even with Havens’ plans for her future in jeopardy over her injury, she continues to do what she does best. School, water polo, sleep. “The injury has taught me that I never really appreciated water polo I always dreaded going to practice but now that I can’t

do everything like I used to,I miss it a lot,” she said. “I let a lot of people down my parents, coach and team by not getting the surgery in the summer but my coach and parents want me to still play and try to push through.” Havens plans to do everything she can to remain a part of the team, but simply cheering on the sidelines will not last. “I want to be in the water so bad to actually help my team. I think about my injury getting worse all the time, it’s a very stressful subject for me,” she said. “Just from the past few weeks of swim practice it has gotten worse and it scares me that I won’t get to play polo.” Though Havens plans to play, she constantly thinks about life without water polo, wondering what she missed out on in the last 11 years. “I’ll have more time for school and focusing on studying but I haven’t decided yet what I will do with all the free time I have, but I know I have to do something athletic cause I have too much energy not to,” she said. As she tries to find the best time to get her surgery, Havens said she will continue to play through her last season. “Water polo has helped me a lot throughout high school, it gives me motivation to work harder in school and get better grades to stay eligible, and it has taught me to be patient with others and teamwork,”she said.“You can’t play water polo without getting in the water.”
