Bus service is available throughout Belize. It is inexpensive and relatively reliable, but rougher

than the buses you might be used to. The majority of the buses in Belize are converted USschool buses. The journey from Belize City to Punta Gorda takes approximately six hours and

costs $12 USD one way. Regular buses stop frequently and allow passengers to board as long as

there is standing room available. Express buses, which run twice per day, are air conditionedcoaches that stop only at major bus stations and make the trip in about 5 hours. We recommend

the James Bus Line, which stops in Belmopan, Dangriga and Independence (near Placencia) enroute from Belize City to Punta Gorda. While there are usually 10+ buses per day, schedules

change frequently so it is best to get up to date information at the bus station.

You can rent a car in most major towns in Belize, though outside of Belize City arrangements for

such rentals are relatively informal. There are no one-way rentals, meaning you must return yourvehicle to the place where you rented it. The following rental companies are available at theinternational airport in Belize City:

Hertz Avis Budget Crystal Auto Rental Vista Auto Rental Nex Gen Auto RentalPanchos Auto Rental Jay Crofton Auto Rental Discount Auto RentalDriving Directions

From all points north, take the Southern Highway towards Punta Gorda. At Independence, besure to follow signs pointing towards Punta Gorda (there is one junction with clearly markedsigns). Follow this road until you pass through Indian Creek village and you arrive a junction thatlocals call Dump'. There will be a gas station on your right. Make a left here and drive about fourmore miles until you see signs for Barranco and Cotton Tree Lodge on your right. Turn right ontothis unpaved road and follow the signs for Cotton Tree Lodge for approximately five miles. Youwill pass through the village of San Felipe and see orange groves on your left. Make a left at theCotton Tree Lodge sign and follow the road one mile, bearing left at the fork, until you arrive atthe Cotton Tree Lodge parking lot.

    Cancun, Mexico

Some guests find it less expensive to fly to Cancun, Mexico. This can be a worthwhile option ifyou are interested in seeing Mayan ruins in that area, such as Tulum. It takes two buses to travelfrom Cancun to Belize City. From the main bus terminal in Cancun, ATS runs air-conditionedbuses to Chetumal five times a day. The trip takes five hours and costs $10 USD. At ChetumalTerminal, purchase a ticket to Belize City. The fare is around $6 USD and takes approximatelytwo hours. From Belize City, you can fly to Punta Gorda or take the James Bus (see Bus Travel).

Many years ago, owner Chris Crowell sailed his boat Juanita up the Moho River and found theland on which Cotton Tree Lodge now stands. This spot on the river is still easily accessible bysailboats and motorboats, and is a great place to rest and explore the Toledo District for a fewdays. Let our staff take care of meals, drinks, and tours for you. Enjoy the beautiful fresh water ofthe Moho for swimming or kayaking. Guests arriving by boat are welcome to stay on their own

vessels or ask about special Sail In' cabana rates based upon availability. No mooring fees arecharged.

    Sailing Directions

From Livingston, GuatemalaWith your compass heading due north, the mouth of the Moho River is about 18 miles fromLivingston. You will see Mother Point and Barranco Village to the south (port side). Offshore, lookfor a single taller tree on the port side to mark the river mouth. Sail parallel to the shore line.

From Placencia, BelizeThe river mouth is approximately 35 miles south of Placencia. Pass Punta Gorda on the starboardside, and travel six miles further south after rounding Orange Point.

Once you reach the river...The channel is clear at the mouth of the river, water is 5 feet deep. Keep partially submerged treebranches on your port side as you approach. Beware of rocks on the starboard side just afterentering river and past the fisherman's house. Motor upstream and keep to the center to avoidtree branches overhead. River will deepen to 20' or 30' and boats under 45' in length should beable to maneuver comfortably. Avoid travel from July - October due to possible flooding andstrong currents.
