Costume and Props

Why have we chosen to use no

props? We have decided not to use any props to connote the isolation of the protagonist and that she has nothing to turn to for a feeling of safety or reassurance. We decided not to use any weapons as stereotypically psychological horror films use the antagonist’s twisted mind as the deadly weapons so no props will be needed in our production.

Isobel, our protagonist has 3 costumes for the character she is playing. The top costume is accompanied with a big black hoodie. We decided to put Isobel in all black for the top costume as this is the antagonists clothing, all black connotes evil and looks extremely sinister. The audience will not be aware that Isobel is wearing this costume. The second costume is what Isobel is filmed in for the majority of the production. We have chosen a school uniform as our production is set in school. We chose this setting as stereotypically psychological horrors are set in everyday places to create personal identity with the audience and connote that the situations occurring could happen to anyone. The third and final costume Isobel will be wearing is the checked night shirt, this costume is relatively normal and mainstream. This would again apply personal identity, emphasising the situation could happen to anyone.

Ines’ and Niamh’s costumes are similar as we wanted to show the audience that they are both innocent. We used a dark colour palette but the unknown antagonist will wear black as they are pure evil. The other characters will wear colours lighter than black or items of black clothing to show their vulnerability and that they are blameless compared to the antagonist. The dark colours also connote the lack of hope and that there is no time left for these characters. The material of both girls top is floaty and not too heavy, we chose to do this as it looks good underwater and also connotes that both girls were gentle and calm, like the movement of this material underwater. The makeup we have decided to use for all our actors, but especially for the girls, is a cold, drowned look. We achieved this by using a red eye shadow underneath the girls eyes to make them look tired and dead. We also put a blue coloured eye shadow on their temples, lips and collar bones to really emphasize the lifelessness and distantness of the characters. This is shown on the next slide.

Production makeup As mentioned in the previous slide, the look we wanted to achieve was a drowned and lifeless look like the two shown here…

Our actors and actresses final makeup is shown below. We believe we achieved the look we were going for.

Marshall’s and Ganesh’s costumes followed the same rules as the girls which was to be dark to connote the impending doom that was coming their way. The boys also had lightweight clothes on to connote their weakness against this antagonist. We clothes Ganesh in black to connote he was the strongest out of all the actors, however he was still overpowered by the unknown antagonist. There would be a backstory for each character if we continued the opening sequence.
