There are many elements which something so simple like costume and makeup can bring to the

entirety of the film.

-It is hugely significant towards how the characterization is portrayed.

-Suggest narrative progression.

-Identify the time period.

-Suggest ideas for how we should respond towards the character.

Why is it important?

Analysis: CostumeMary Antoinette (2006)

The time period of which the film is set, is clearly identified through the costume. The 17th century styling is shown through her elaborate gown and jewelry. Her costume placed against the other women within the shot also suggests that she is of higher class and importance.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World (2010)The entirety of the film, bases of a ‘comic book’ adaptation. The costume represents just that. They all suit very laid back, casual clothing which identifies the age of the characters to be young and also fits the brief of the genre.

It also identifies characterization within the characters, through the use of layering sheer materials emphasizes their ‘rebellious’ personas.

Analysis: Makeup

In this shot, Keanu Reeves suits black eyeliner and enhanced eyebrows to emphasize his ‘stern’ look. The eyeliner draws attention towards to eyes and makes his character appear more powerful and strong.

The makeup here is done, to make her appear ‘doll like’. The false lashes make her eyes appear bigger and more sympathetic. From an audiences perspective we would feel more empathy towards her character because of her youthful appearance.
