Biologically induced degradation of sprayed concrete in subsea tunnels

PhD student: Sabina Karacic

PROBLEM: - A novel deterioration process has recently been discovered in several Norwegian subsea tunnels resulting in rapid degradation of the sprayed concrete matrix and destructive corrosion of the steel fibers in areas with leakages of saline groundwater. - Thick microbial biofilms, with iron and manganese oxidizing bacteria are involved in the degradation process.

The tunnel at the test site, one of the tunnel locations with extensive biofilm formation and close up of the biofilm on the sprayed concrete.
