The design for Costa Verde Center creates a unique destination for the residents of the La Jolla and the UTC Community. The design is inspired by the nearby Rose Canyon and adjacent fi nger canyons that historically extended into this site.
Esplanade Court invites visitors into the site and leads to the entry round-a-bout accentuated by a large specimen tree. The rhythm of the project architecture creates a series of unique exterior gathering spaces. An outdoor living room, set within the retail experience, includes dining opportunities and a large fi replace for visitors to gather. This space is shaded by a large specimen tree and signature shade structure inspired by the architectural infl uence of Irving Gill. The streetscape includes festival lights, benches, raised decorative planters & pots, and smaller seating nodes. At the end of the main street visitors will encounter the large civic plaza. This can be used for year round events, dining, and gathering under the signature shade structure which serves as the focal point of the main street. A grand staircase in the civic plaza leads users down to the south side of the property which provides a continuation of the retail experience. A surface parking lot is situated in the southern portion of the development and serve the adjacent retail establishments. An elevated walkway traverses a rain garden which connects the eastern and western retail establishments.
Costa Verde Center can also be experienced on the rooftops. As visitors exit the light rail platform they enter the site through a rooftop park. This rooftop park off ers a diverse range of amenities including shade trees, shade structures, a central plaza, cafe/lounge seating, a game area, and fl exible turf for passive recreation and special events. Across the main street from the rooftop park is the rooftop community garden. The community garden is located above the community meeting space and provides local residents an opportunity to harvest their own produce in a setting that encourages community building.
Whether visiting to shop, people-watch, or meet a neighbor; the re-visioning of Costa Verde Center creates an authentic town center to serve the residents of the surrounding communities.
