You will have the option to decline during the online enrollment process Tentative Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival and Orientation Depart for San Jose Costa Rica. Your Global Travel Alliance representative will meet you upon arrival. Transfer to our lodge nestled in coffee fields in the hills above the San Jose central valley. Orientation to the activities this week. Day 2: Home Building and Ecology We proceed to the area where you will build a home for a needy family. All homes are built to the same specifications and contain 600 square feet of living space with the kitchen and bathroom outside. The group will also have lunch with the recipients of the home. A local contractor will be in charge of the project with participation from Service Scholars. Dinner and a night hike through the rainforest with a local naturalist or other evening activity. Day 3: Home Building and Ecology Continue the home building project. After dinner activities depending on hotel location. Day 4: Home Building and Sustainable Farming Continue the home building project. Also today, students will explore a family subsistence farm to learn how this once denuded piece of land is now providing food for the family and habitat for wildlife. Students learn how the food they have been eating during the week is harvested and processed. Day 5: Home Building and Local School Visit Continue the home building project. In the afternoon visit a rural Costa Rican High School for a unique inter-cultural exchange. Day 6: Home Building and Zip Lining Continue the home building project. Finish the day by flying high through the rain forest canopy on zip lines. Experience the same feeling as the birds and monkeys who live in this “upstairs” environment of the rain forest. Day 7: Cut the Ribbon! Finish the home and welcome the family with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Later in the day, shop for souvenirs and reminders of your week in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica. Day 8: Depart for Home Return home with and the experience that you helped make a difference for a family in need and gained an understanding of a different culture.
