COLLECTING CHRISTMAS TREESMONDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2015 THROUGH JANUARY 8, 2016

The Arts are ALIVE in Costa Mesa! The City’s Cultural Arts Committee has been hard at work in their eff orts to enhance and support the artistic community of Costa Mesa. It is the Committee’s goal to bring forth impactful programs, events, and resources for residents in regard to all things art related in the City.

A great example of the Committee’s creative, hard-work is the “Utility Box Beautifi cation Project.” The focus of this project is to incorporate art into public spaces by using utility boxes as a canvas. With the fi rst phase of this project complete, the city has six eye-catching utility box art pieces to showcase. Following the success of the fi rst phase, a second phase is now in progress. The group is committed to increasing the total box count to at least twelve during this second phase. Artwork utilized for this project is submitted both by local artists and by the committee members. Future utility box artwork may also include submissions from local businesses and community partners.

Another unique endeavor that came to fruition this past November was the Committee’s new signature art event, ARTventure. The event showcased the works of local Orange County artists in a non-traditional gallery-style format, at the trendy, South Coast Collection, Cisco Home showroom. This 3-day event paired selected artistic submission side-by-side with hand crafted home furnishings, fi xtures, and décor and design elements. The committee accepted and displayed over 110 pieces of art which included a variety of media such as: oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, woodwork, photography, fashion design, quilting and more. Paired with an art show, to give a true fusion of the arts and entertainment, were live performances featuring musical, literary, and culinary forms. There was truly something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind art event.

With sponsors including Cisco Home, South Coast Collection, and The Segerstrom Center for the Arts, this event is primed to become an annual event that highlights why Costa Mesa really is the “City of the Arts.”

Be sure to keep a lookout for new utility boxes as they pop-up throughout the city and for the Committee’s revamped Arts in the Park event in May 2016!

Art is an adventure–join in on the fun! Kim Pederson, Chairman

Bark Park 890 Arlington, Costa Mesa | (714) 754-5041

Bark Park is an area where the public can take their dogs and legally allow them to run and play off -leash. Access to Bark Park is off Arlington Avenue just before Newport Boulevard in the southeast corner of TeWinkle Park. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Wetlands1298 Victoria St., | Costa Mesa | 7 a.m. – Sunset

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely fi nd Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends.

Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacifi c Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

With nine diff erent trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacifi c Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.

It’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center

The many lakes, waterfalls, and waterfowl provide for leisurely strolls and adventures for the kids

Motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels

Completely “barrier-free” universally accessible and ADA compliant
