Remember, parents are a child’s first teachers andexamples. If you always buckle your seat belt, your childwill think it is the natural thing to do. Make it a firm rulethat the vehicle does not go until everyone is buckledup. Make no exceptions.

No one can predict if use of a child restraint will preventinjury or death in a particular crash. However, combinedwith careful driving, proper use of a child restraint canlower a child’s risk of injury or death in most crashes.

WARNING!The vehicle or LATCH belt must stay

tight at the belt path.When you switch fromone mode to the next, review the sections ofthis instruction manual that apply to thatmode. If you don’t, your child could beinjured or killed.

Never take your child out of the childrestraint or try to tend to your child’s needswhile the vehicle is moving. Never leavechild unattended.

Do not use a child restraint with damagedor missing parts.

Do not use cut, frayed or damagedharnesses.

Do not substitute parts or try to modifythe child restraint in any way.

Do not use a child restraint that has beenin a crash.You must get a new childrestraint.

Use the child restraint only on vehicleseats that face forward. Do not use on seatsthat face the sides or rear of the vehicle.

Check the vehicle or LATCH belt beforeeach use. Use only if the belt can betightened properly and securely.

This child restraint should be securelybelted in the vehicle even when not in use. Ina crash or sudden stop, an unsecured childrestraint could injure other occupants.

Do not use this child restraint without theseat pad.

WARNING!

According to accident statistics, childrenare safer when properly restrained in therear seating positions than in the frontseating positions.

Never place a child rear-facing in aseating position with an activefrontal airbag.

This child restraint must always face therear of the vehicle and be in the fullyreclined position when the child weighsbetween 5-35 lbs. (2.3-16 kg) and is less thanone year old.

Never place a child less than one-year oldforward facing.

Check vehicle instructions for moreinformation about air bag/child restraint use.

For vehicles with an air bag, but without aback seat, refer to your vehicle ownersmanual.

Make sure the harness height is correctfor your child’s size.

The harness must be snug.

Do not lubricate buckles and fasteners.

Failure to follow these warnings can result inthe serious injury or death of your child. Tohelp you recognize those instructions whichare most critical for your child’s safety, weuse this symbol :

Registration and Recall Information

This restraint is certified for aircraft use. Use onforward-facing aircraft seats only and in a position wherethe lap belt can be tightened securely.This child restraintis installed in an aircraft seat the same way it is installedin the vehicle.

Use the child restraint only with F.A.A. certifiedequipment. Contact the airline prior to taking a childrestraint on board in order to comply with their specificregulations.

General and Warm Weather UseTo help protect your vehicle seat’s upholstery fromdamage, use a towel underneath and behind childrestraint.To avoid your child being seriously burned, takethe following precautions:1. Choosing Restraint and Position

Your child’s height, weight and age determine how yourchild restraint should be placed in the vehicle and whichrestraint should be used.

5-35 lbs (2.3-16 kg) 19-36 in. (48-91 cm)

Rear-Facing using 5-point harnessChild and child restraintface the back of thevehicle and are placed inthe back seat.

2 Loosen harness by pushingdown on the harnessrelease lever while pullingout on the harness.Depending on your model,

the harness releaselever may be undera flap on the pad, infront of therestraint.

Preparing Child Restraint to Fit Your Child

You MUST make these adjustments with yourchild before you install the child restraint in thevehicle.

Make sure LATCH beltpackaging is pulled free ofchild restraint shell.

5 Place the child’s bottomand back flat against thechild restraint.This willincrease comfort and allowthe harness to properlytighten.

Rear-Facing Position:Harness slot must be evenwith or just below theshoulders.

If the bottom harness slotsare above the child’sshoulders, do not use thischild restraint. Use an infantchild restraint instead.

If the top harness slots are below the child’s shoulders,do not use this child restraint. Use a belt-positioningbooster instead.

Check Harness Height

7 Determine which set ofharness slots works bestfor your child. Adjust ifneeded.

To change harnesslocation:From the back of the seat,remove harness fromsplitter plate.

Pull harness through theharness slots from thefront.

Rethread harness into newharness guide location.Refasten harness tosplitter plate. Make sureharness does not twist.

Determine which of thethree available crotch strapslots is both comfortableand snug. Refer to“Removing Seat Pad forCleaning” section to adjustbuckle.

Pillow (on selectmodels): The pillow (A)provides extra comfort foryour toddler.To remove pillow: Pullfastening strips off top ofpad and remove pillow. Toreplace, pull top fasteningstraps over top of pad andattach on the back side ofpad.

Infant Insert (on select models): When using insert(B), make sure insert does not cover your infant’s face inany way. Remove the insert for older babies andtoddlers.To remove insert: Unthread the harness from thesplitter plate. Remove insert (see section “To ChangeHarness Location”). Rethread harness and reattach tosplitter plate. Reverse to replace infant insert.

Accessories (on select models)

Harness Covers (onselect models): Harnesscovers help providecomfort to the neck. Forharness covers to fitcorrectly, you may have tofit the upper ends of thecovers through the harnessslots. To remove, unthreadharness from harnessbracket. Slide covers offand reattach harness.

Install Cup Holder (on select models):Hook cup holder on sideof shell. Make certainbottom of cup holder snapsinto place. Cup holder canbe on either side.

Push each buckle plate intobuckle until you hear a“click”. Remember toalways pull up on harnessstraps to make sure buckleis locked tightly.

Removing Your Child From theChild Restraint

1 Loosen harness by pushingdown on the harnessrelease lever while pullingout on the harness.Depending on your model,the harness release levermay be under a flap on the

pad, in front ofthe restraint.

Press red button onbuckle to release thebuckle plates. Placeharness over sides of childrestraint. Remove child.

4 Pull on harness adjustmentstrap to tighten harnesssnugly.

NOTE: A snug strapshould not allow any slack.It lies in a relativelystraight line withoutsagging. It does not presson the child’s flesh or pushthe child’s body into anunnatural position.

Rear-facing - Must befully reclined.

To recline, pull down onrecline stand and rotate upinto shell.

For upright position, rotateout on recline stand andpush upward to lock intoposition.

Choosing LATCH or Vehicle Belts

The LATCH System

Anchor bars

Vehicle BeltsIf LATCH is not anoption, you will use yourvehicle’s belts. In mostcases you will use thelap/shoulder beltcombination. There aresome vehicle belts thatwill not work with a childrestraint or will requirespecial attention. Seenext page for specificinstructions.

LATCH means LowerAnchors and Tethers forCHildren. Not all vehiclesmanufactured beforeSeptember 2002 wereequipped with LATCH.

The LATCH system allowsa child restraint to besecured in the vehiclewithout using the vehiclebelt system and can ONLYbe used in vehicles thathave the anchor barsinstalled.

Check your vehicleowners manual to seewhich seating positionsmay be equipped with theLATCH system.

Not all vehicle belts will work with this child restraint.You must determine if your vehicles belts are compatiblewith this child restraint. If you will use the LATCHsystem, refer to the LATCH section.ELR - Emergency Locking Retractor Belts Definition:These belts only lock in a sudden stop orcrash.To see if you have this type of belt, pull on the lapbelt, let it return part way, then pull on it again. If itmoves freely, it is an ELR belt and the child restraintcould work loose during normal driving. Refer to yourvehicle owner’s manual.Some ELR belts will convert to Automatic LockingRetractor (ALR) belts if you pull the belt all the way out.Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual.ELR shoulder belts either require a locking clip orcannot be used with any child restraint.ELR lap-only belts must be replaced with a manual belt;contact your vehicle dealer. A locking clip will notcorrect this problem.Automatic/Passive vehicle seat beltsAutomatic (passive) 2-point belt has no lap belt.Youmust install a lap belt to secure a child restraint.You mayalso need to install an extra lap belt for an automatic 3-point belt. Refer to the vehicles owner’s manual. Alocking clip will not correct this problem.Vehicle belt too shortContact your vehicle dealer for a seat belt extender.Belts in center of the door or side panel (A) ormiddle of the vehicle seat cushion (B).

You must move the childrestraint to another seatinglocation.A locking clip willnot fix this problem.See “Locking Clip” section.

Manual Belts

Manual lap belts arecommon in the centerrear seat and can allowthe child restraint toloosen when it is tilted orjarred. After tightening thelap belt securely, tilt andpush the child restraintforward and to both sides.If no loosening occurs,your child restraint shouldbe secure.

If loosening does occur, trythe following: If the buckleplate slides on the belt,turn the buckle plate over.If the buckle slides, turnthe buckle. Refasten thevehicle lap belt.The releasebutton should face outafter twisting so that it iseasy to reach in anemergency.

If the lap belt continues toloosen, the child restraintmust be moved toanother location in thevehicle.A locking clip willnot correct this problem;see your vehicle owner’smanual.

Locking Clip

NOTE: Remove the locking clip when the seat belt is notbeing used with a child restraint. The locking clip is locatedon the back of the seat.A locking clip will not fix all typesof seat belt problems.Before you put your child restraint in the vehicle, buckle thelap/shoulder belt. Pull on the lap belt portion. If it loosens orslips, you must either use a locking clip to hold the seat belttight or move the child restraint to another seating location.

Thread both vehicle lapand shoulder belts throughthe slot (as shown) andout other side. Buckle.Pull up on shoulder beltuntil all slack is out and lapbelt is tight.

Grasp both vehicle beltstogether just behind thebuckle plate and unbuckle.NOTE: If the buckle plateends up behind the childrestraint, grasp the belts tothe outside of the childrestraint, as close to thebuckle plate as possible.

5 Rebuckle belt. Lap beltportion should now betight. If not, removelocking clip and repeat allsteps.

Thread both portions ofthe vehicle belt onto thelocking clip.

Position locking clip about1 in. (2.5 cm) from vehiclebelt’s buckle plate.

To use rear-facing thechild restraint MUST befully reclined.

To fully recline, pull downon recline stand androtate up into shell.

A loose top anchorage (tether) strap canresult in serious injury or death.Loose LATCH hooks can result in seriousinjury or death.

After deciding whether to use your Vehicle Belts orLATCH, be sure to read the warnings below as theypertain to both systems.

Rear-Facing Installation

When LATCH is notbeing used, fastenLATCH hooks on side ofchild restraint as shown.

Do Not Use the topanchorage strap in therear-facing position.

Hook top anchoragestrap to recline stand(see “Adjusting the TopAnchorage Strap”section).

Rear-Facing Installation withVehicle Belt:

Thread the vehicle lap orlap/shoulder beltcombination through therear-facing belt slot.

Thread UNDER seat pad infront of crotch strap andout opposite side. Bucklevehicle belt.Do not place vehiclebelt over child’s legs.

Place child restraint rear-facing in the back seat.With child restraint in thereclined position, make surelevel line on side of shell islevel with ground. Adjustchild restraint if needed.NOTE: Hook the topanchorage strap’s hook torecline stand.

With weakest hand atbelt path, tilt and pushthe child restraintforward and back, andfrom side to side. If theseat belts do not loosen,your child restraintshould be secure.NOTE: Some “play”from front to back orabout an inch from sideto side is acceptable. If itmoves more, review“Knowing your VehicleBelts” and “The LockingClip” sections.After checking for hotseat and buckles, securechild as described in“Securing Your Child inthe Child Restraint”section.

WARNING!Using this child restraint in any vehicleseat where the lap belt cannot betightened securely and properly or whereit can be loosened by pulling on it canresult in serious injury or death.

4 Push down firmly on thechild restraint and pullup on belt to tighten. Fora manual belt, refer to“Knowing your VehicleBelt” section. Pull up onshoulder strap toremove any slack.

Clean with warm sudsywater, rinse clean and airdry. Do not use bleach orother harsh cleaners.

Replace seat pad byreversing order, starting bylaying pad in shell. Tuck inpad around harnessadjuster. Hook the elasticstraps at top of seat. Turnseat over and thread allelastic straps into theholes and connect themto the posts.

4 Insert buckle’s metal clipup through the shell andpad. From the front, pullbuckle free from shell andpad. Lock buckle platesinto buckle for future use.

Installation Tips:

In the rear-facing position, the harness strap must bepositioned at or below the child’s shoulders. In theforward-facing position the harness must be positioned ator above the child’s shoulders.

In the rear or forward-facing position make sure the vehiclelap belt is locked.When you grasp the the child restraint atthe belt path, it should not move more than about an inchfrom side to side.

�1. If your child restraint is not held securely by the belt:Press down firmly on the child restraint and remove all theslack in the belt. Make sure the belt buckle is not up againstthe child restraint where the belt cannot be tightened.Review Locking Clip section and Top Anchorage StrapSection. If you cannot secure the child restraint tightly,move it to another seating location.

�2. If the child restraint buckle or harnessadjustment lever sticks or you cannot get the strapstight enough around child:DO NOT LUBRICATE. Check around buckle and harnessrelease lever for dropped food, sticky spilled drinks, dirt,leaves, etc. Clean with warm water and/or remove objectwith tweezers. If you cannot get the harness to adjust andremain tight with the buckle securely locked, do not use thechild restraint.

�3. If your harness twists or ropes:Straighten the harness each time you put your child in theseat to help prevent twisting. Lock the buckle and tightenharness and it will be ready for next use.

�4. If your infant sits too upright inthe rear-facing position:If your vehicle seat slopes so much thatyour infant is sitting upright, you mayplace a rolled towel under the front ofthe child restraint so that the level line onthe side of shell is level (horizontal).

Check often to be sure padding is still in place and thevehicle belt is tight.

WARNINGUsing padding that tilts the child restraintfarther back than the level-to-ground linecan result in serious injury or death.
