“Experience” Videos Enliven Tourism Site Thanks to the recent addition of four, one-minute video tours to the Chemung Chamber’s tourism website, those looking to plan a trip to our region can now get a front row glimpse into some of Twain Country’s one-of-a-kind experiences!

Each of the hi-def vignettes aids in trip planning by bringing a particular attraction to life. In the course of four short minutes, visitors to www.MarkTwainCountry.com can hop aboard a Trolley into Twain Country tour, soar in a glider over Harris Hill, tour a gallery at the Arnot Art Museum and visit Elmira’s Twain attractions. In addition, an e-postcard option makes it possible to share the videos with others through a single click.

Joel Carberry, local glider pilot and enthusiast, is particularly enamored with the glider-themed video and believes it will increase interest in visiting Harris Hill. “It conveys the thrill of the sport! Viewers see what it’s like to sit in the cockpit while a glider takes off, soars over the Chemung Valley, and comes in for a landing. It brings them one step closer to an actual visit,” he said. Carberry also noted that the video highlights the breathtaking views that are so much a part of the Harris Hill soaring experience.

Research has shown that people who view travel related video are 70% more likely to visit that destination. The video library was designed to strengthen the bond with potential visitors by providing a more intimate look at our community. It is also an excellent tool for businesses to use to showcase the region in their relocation initiatives.

Chamber members are encouraged to check out the video library themselves and promote our community by sending an e-postcard. Just go to: http://www.marktwaincountry.com/explore/video-library .

Harris Hill Heralds the Arrival of Spring!

Mark Twain Country

Spring has arrived and with it comes the reenergizing of the community with the reopening of Harris Hill Amusement Park (www.HarrisHillAmusements.com ) and Harris Hill Soaring Corporation (www.harrishillsoaring.org ) on weekends!

Due to unseasonably warm weather, the amusement park is now open and the runway will offer glider rides beginning mid-April. Both will resume their regular daily schedules in June. For more information on exact dates and hours of operation, please check their respective websites.

Sweepstakes to Promote JFK to ELM FlightsThe Chemung Chamber has joined forces with the Elmira Corning Regional Airport (ECRA) and Finger Lakes Wine Country to launch a sweepstakes for a four-day, three-night visit to the region to promote the start of Delta Airlines’ direct flights from JFK to ELM in June. It will be offered in conjunction with Delta and will run throughout late spring.

Among the sweepstake offerings are: roundtrip airfare to ECRA for two, three nights at Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, six hours of private limousine service through TLC Limo, two glider rides at Harris Hill, behind the scenes tour at the National Soaring Museum, glassmaking at Corning Museum of Glass, VIP wine tasting experience at Glenora Wine Cellars, and much, much more!

Full details will soon be posted at www.FingerLakesWineCountry.com.

Fed Seeks Small Biz Input

The regional branch of the Federal Reserve Bank has invited the Chamber’s small business members to participate in an online poll regarding business conditions and possible financing needs.

The purpose of the poll is to give policy makers at the Federal Reserve some collective input which transcends the raft of statistical data which often drives decision making in Washington.

Interested members can find the poll online at http://frb.us2.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_87cGXPuvPGuqWFe. The Poll takes just ten minutes to complete.

The New York branch serves the tri-state region of Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

With just a few weeks remaining in their program year, the current Leadership class is hurriedly finishing assignments and completing an often rigorous calendar of meetings and work sessions. The commencement breakfast event will be held at the Holiday Inn Riverview on May 3rd. Commencement will mark the sixteenth activity of the class which began meeting last September. During the year, participants confered with leaders of numerous facets of the community, addressing topics such as local Legislation, Public Safety, Education, Tourism, Transportation and Health Care. Linda Lathrop of Joint Education & Training facilitates the sessions which also include workshops on ethics, volunteering and, of course, leadership.

As the Leadership program approaches three decades of service, there is an abundance of alumni in the community who continue to share their considerable talents and a common commitment to the best possible future of Chemung County.

Members interested in learning more about the May 3rd breakfast or the 2012-2013 program that will begin in September are invited to contact Sue Panetta at the Chamber office, phone 734.5137 or e-mail [email protected].

I have lived in Horseheads for the past 19 years with my husband, Tom, and our son, Paul. I am currently a licensed Insurance Agent at The Wallin Insurance Agency.

In April of 2008, the Leaders Group Association was formed. I was the first president and founder of LGA, and over time, we have evolved into the Twin Tiers Business Group.

For the past four years I have been a member of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce’s Member Services Committee. Our sole purpose is to greet new businesses in the area and welcome them to the Chamber.

I am a new member of the Junior League of Greater Elmira – Corning. In past years I have served on committees including Chemung County Habitat for Humanity and the Horseheads School District for their 10 year strategic plan. I was also a past Board Member for Big Flats Little League and have participated in local fundraising events including The American Cancer Society, The Juvenile Diabetes Walk and The United Way.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of 2009 Leadership Chemung Class. I was amazed at how much I discovered through this program. We took a trolley ride through Elmira, toured the Chemung County Jail and rode in a fire truck at the Elmira Corn-ing Regional Airport. I made lasting connections with the other members of our class. I highly recommend you participate in this program. Not only will you learn about the community, but you will also make quality connections that will benefit you throughout your career.

April 2012

Business Council Supports Repeal of Wage Theft Prevention Act The New York State Senate recently passed legislation (S.6063A) to repeal the notification provisions of the Wage Theft Prevention Act.

“The passage of Senate legislation that would fix the Wage Theft Prevention Act is an important step toward realizing the goal of fostering investment and economic development in New York,” said Heather Briccetti, president and CEO, The Business Council of New York State, Inc. “With so much of the focus in 2012 on economic development, it is fitting that this costly, unnecessary new mandate on businesses be repealed."

The “job theft prevention act of 2010” requires that each year a written pay notice be provided by all private sector employ-ers to each and every employee in New York State, and that a written acknowledgement of the receipt of such notice be obtained each year from each and every employee by their employer, and be maintained by the employer for six years.

The Business Council supports repeal of this annual pay notice mandate.

Coalition Supports Tier VI Pension ReformThe following is an excerpt of a letter recently sent to leaders of the New York Senate and Assembly by a statewide coalition of organizations urging support of the Tier VI option that is included in Governor Cuomo’s 2012-13 budget proposal.

We write to ask for your public support for pension reform, a measure essential for the future viability of New York State’s businesses and economy.

As New York continues to recover from the recent recession, we cannot afford to continue the past practice of taxing busi-nesses out of this state. As our pension system has grown more and more bloated each year, businesses have been forced to pick up the bill, paying higher and higher property taxes to cover the growing cost.

Over the years, New York’s businesses have put more and more money into the pension system to the point where local companies are almost subsidizing pension benefits.

We need to be taking steps to make New York more competi-tive. That includes finding ways to lower property taxes. As we have seen over the past several years, property tax in-creases affect jobs. In the last 10 years alone, pension growth represented 88% of property tax increases from city governments, 41% from county governments, 28% from vil-lages and 22% from towns. Our property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and businesses pay 35% of all prop-erty taxes in the state. Businesses pay five times more in property taxes to localities than they do in corporate income taxes – more than $2,300 per employee in property taxes.

As we continue down the road to recovery, it requires that all of our state’s leaders foster an environment that supports local businesses, instead of continuing fiscally irresponsible

policies that hurt businesses. We respectfully ask you to support the implementation of Tier VI as proposed by the governor, and take a major step toward making New York more economically competitive.

2012 New Jobs-NY Creation PlanThe Senate Republican Conference recently announced details of the 2012 NEW JOBS-NY Job Creation Plan that calls for business tax cuts, tax incentives for hiring the un-employed, a moratorium on new taxes and a state spending cap. The 2012 NEW JOBS-NY includes reforms which will make New York more economically competitive.

“New York needs good paying jobs. The New Jobs NY legis-lation shows that the State Senate leadership are clearly focused on creating them,” said Heather Briccetti, president and CEO, The Business Council of New York State, Inc. “The program provides much needed tax relief to small busi-nesses, which are the engines of job creation and economic growth throughout the state. We look forward to working with the Senate to ensure that the enacted budget will con-tinue to restrain the cost of government, while reforming major state spending programs, and providing mandate relief that reduces the cost of local government.”

The proposal includes: a 20-percent corporate tax cut worth $65 million to 200,000 small businesses; a 10-percent tax cut for 800,000 small business filing under personal income tax status, that would save employers $120 million; tying tuition tax credits and deductions to the higher education price index so the tax credits will keep pace with inflation; holding the annual growth in state spending to 2 percent, the Legislature and Governor imposed that cap on local gov-ernments and school districts last year; a moratorium on new taxes and fees and a constitutional amendment that would require a supermajority vote of two-thirds of the Senate and Assembly to raise state taxes; and reducing the paperwork and bureaucracy that businesses face.

Business Council Joins Social CommunityThe Business Council of New York State, Inc. is now on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. By joining the online com-munities, The Business Council hopes to interact more closely with members, quickly letting them know how politi-cal issues and policies affect their businesses. The Business Council's Facebook page also provides a listing of job open-ings from around the State.

“Social media outlets will allow us to reach our members as events unfold, and allows them to communicate with us like never before,” said Heather Briccetti, president and CEO of The Business Council. “It means creating an ongoing dia-logue about our advocacy efforts to create economic growth and good jobs in New York.”
