COSA President’s message

Welcome to COSA 2015, this year held on the banks of the Parramatta River. It seems hardly any time has passed since the last COSA Conference in Melbourne 12 months ago - and yet a great deal has happened, both on the software development front for SirsiDynix and its customers, and in the library community more broadly.

The COSA Committee, all of us newly inducted at the 2014 Conference, have been working hard with SirsiDynix to prepare what we hope will be an informative and inspiring program for 2015, and we invite all delegates to take an active participation in the proceedings in order to get the most out of the sessions.

The theme of this year’s Conference is “Experience the Future of Libraries”. This relates not only to new technologies and software applications, but also the innovative ways libraries are using existing technologies and restructuring their service delivery to meet the changing needs of their patrons. I, for one, am optimistic about the future of libraries, while acknowledging there are many challenges in all sectors to face and overcome.

Putting the perennial bugbear of financial and funding pressures to one side, one of the top challenges we face is the ever changing behaviour of library users (or potential users), particularly in the area of increased mobility. The skyrocketing use of mobile devices by the wider community puts pressure on libraries to provide access to their resources and services no matter the platform, and no matter where users are located. Amongst the presentations at this Conference will be one by Marrickville library demonstrating their own custom mobile phone app, developed in partnership with Acresta and SirsiDynix; while Yarra Library will present on how they have been using SirsiDynix’s MobileCirc to expand their services to their inner-city community.

The increasing importance and utilisation of partnerships within the library sector demonstrates how libraries are meeting their challenges – either in the form of formal Consortia as represented by SAPLN, Swift, TALIS and Kotui in the APAC region, or through partnership programs with SirsiDynix and other vendors in the development, refinement and integration of software and technology solutions. These types of arrangements also represent the “future of libraries”, some of which will be demonstrated at this year’s conference (SAPLN’s partnership with SirsiDynix to develop the BLUEcloud Acquisitions client, Swift’s One Card initiative for Victorian public libraries, and again Marrickville’s partnership with Acresta and SirsiDynix in the development of their mobile phone app).

Other customer presentations include innovative implementations of Enterprise (TALIS in Tasmania), a custom Online User Registration project (Parramatta Library), and from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) there will be a session outlining a range of different and innovative technologies.

Page 3: COSA SYDNEY 2015 COSA...2 COSA President’s message Welcome to COSA 2015, this year held on the banks of the Parramatta River. It seems hardly any time has passed since the last COSA

3

The two panel sessions – one on third party cataloguing tools, and the other on various uses of Portfolio – are intended to provide practical examples of the use of their respective technologies, and invite the audience to join in and contribute to the discussions as they explore their topics.

SirsiDynix have made considerable progress in the development of their BLUEcloud suite of products, including the long-awaited release of their new reporting tool BLUEcloud Analytics, and the first incarnations of their BLUEcloud Staff clients for cataloguing and circulation. Delegates will be keen to hear of these and other developments to come.

The aim of the COSA Conference itself is to foster partnerships and collaboration – partnerships between libraries as delegates meet and discuss ideas, projects and solutions, and importantly partnership with SirsiDynix in the development of their software. It is the responsibility of all of us, as customers of SirsiDynix, to work with them to ensure their products fill the needs of libraries and library users, and this conference offers the ideal opportunity to meet with SirsiDynix representatives – developers, support staff and the executive - and share our experiences and expectations, thus shaping the software and services of the future.

SirsiDynix message

Welcome to Parramatta and COSA 2015!

Along with the COSA Committee and everyone who has worked so hard to make this year’s conference a reality, I want to personally welcome you to Parramatta and thank you for your participation. It means a great deal to our company to have such impressive, forward-thinking institutions here in Australia and the greater Asia-Pacific region.

Consistent with this year’s theme, we are excited to have all of our customers experience the future of libraries and, specifically, the next-generation library services platform (LSP): SirsiDynix’s BLUEcloud initiative. We are working steadily and consistently—yet aggressively—to deliver the best library automation products the industry has ever seen. As you know, and as many of you have experienced firsthand, the BLUEcloud LSP delivers a powerful, state-of-the-art, browser-based system that doesn’t require a data migration or operational risk. And as I mentioned last year, we want you to enjoy solid value for your maintenance dollars. Many BLUEcloud products come as part of your regular maintenance payments!

We’ve seen exponential growth not only in the number of BLUEcloud products being used, but also in the number of you taking advantage of them in your libraries. Enterprise, MobileCirc, eResource Central, BLUEcloud Analytics, BLUEcloud Cataloging, and BLUEcloud PAC are just some of the new products in use at hundreds of libraries. In aggregate, we now have thousands of libraries using one or more BLUEcloud products!

And when I consider the theme of “Experiencing the Future of Libraries,” I immediately think of the powerful fusion of linked data and the BLUEcloud architecture. I can confidently state that our BLUEcloud technology will enable and amplify the potential of linked data in powerful and exciting ways. Our vision and objectives for our customers remain lofty—we want to continually increase your mindshare and relevance within the communities you serve. We believe we are focusing on the key technologies that will make that a reality.

5

And it’s not just the potential of linked data that we must use. From the global surge of digital content to the tsunami of mobile adoption, it is both an exciting and challenging time for libraries everywhere. Smartphones, tablets, eBooks, and eContent have forever changed the way we discover and consume information. These devices transform users’ expectations about what services a library should offer. The BLUEcloud LSP provides the solid foundation that will keep your libraries and staff at the centre of your community’s mindshare for decades to come as the role of libraries continues to evolve.

Whether you’re on Horizon or Symphony, BLUEcloud is for you. And thanks to the magic of cloud architecture and Web Services, you don’t have to “go” to BLUEcloud. BLUEcloud comes directly to you: no migration, and no need to abandon the cherished functionality of your existing system. BLUEcloud is truly the best of all worlds.

On behalf of the SirsiDynix team, I want to recognise and thank the COSA Committee for all the work they put into the user group and hosting this great event every year. It’s a monumental task, and we sincerely appreciate their efforts. Thank you for being here with us and being our partners as we move full speed ahead.

The Parramatta area was home to generations of Burramattagal people, a clan of the Darug, who lived along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River.  The word ‘burra’ means ‘eel’ and the clan name Burramattagal is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal expression for ‘the place where the eels lie down’. According to the historic record, the annual congregation of eels occurred where brackish water met tidal saltwater at the head of the Parramatta River in the vicinity of today’s Lennox Bridge.

Parramatta’s rich Indigenous heritage is reflected in the City’s name, official crest and the widespread use of Indigenous designs in public art throughout the City. Descendants of the Darug have an on-going connection and contemporary presence in Parramatta.

Only 24kms west of Sydney Cove at the head of Sydney Harbour, Parramatta was officially founded by Governor Arthur Phillip on 2 November 1788. Widely referred to as the ‘cradle of a nation’, Parramatta’s fertile alluvial soils saved the struggling British colony from starvation when the Colony’s first successful crops were harvested in 1789 at the government farm. Earlier farming ventures at Farm Cove on Sydney Harbour failed because the sandstone based soils were too infertile to successfully grow crops, let alone fruit trees.

Laid out in 1790, Parramatta quickly became the settlement of choice, with early Colonial Governors preferring to live in the Government House in Parramatta Park for the next 55 years rather than the first government house on the hill above Sydney Cove. The rural seat of Parramatta was regarded as a more gentile abode than the rollicking shores of Port Jackson.

Australia’s second European settlement, Parramatta is home to some of the nation’s oldest buildings including Old Government House (circa 1799) which incorporates archaeological remains of Governor Phillip’s 1788 Government House (which was built on the site of the current day Museum of Sydney).

Also in Parramatta Park, the nearby Salter’s Cottage was built between 1798 and 1800 and later converted to a dairy by Governor Macquarie in 1815.

Located in Parramatta, John and Elizabeth Macarthur’s Elizabeth Farm Cottage (circa 1793) incorporates part of Australia’s oldest surviving private building.

Parramatta Town Hall stands on the site of the site of Australia’s first European marketplace (1812) which was designated when Parramatta became a market town.

From 1822 until 1833 an annual meeting in the Parramatta marketplace was attended by the Governor of the day, his family, and Aboriginal tribes from various areas. Parramatta tribes were joined by Indigenous people from the localities of Concord, Kissing Point, Prospect, Eastern Creek and as far away as Jervis Bay and Shoalhaven.

Governor Macquarie set the precedent for this event on 28 March 1820 when he invited 60 Aboriginal men and women to breakfast and dinner to celebrate his son’s sixth birthday. This event ended in 1822 with Macquarie’s retirement and departure for Great Britain.

Incorporated as a municipality in in 1861, Parramatta officially became a city on 2 November 1938 on the 150th anniversary of its Foundation Day. In 1948 it was amalgamated with Dundas, Ermington, Rydalmere and Granville councils to form the current City of Parramatta.
