CATALOGS - SIZE
The amount of material covered by each catalog varies. The larger the
catalog the more likely you are to locate items of use.
POLAR – 400,000 items
OhioLINK – 10 million+ items
WorldCAT – 110 million+ items

Major Types of Searching by Concept-
Keyword
• Looks in several locations (usually
subject, article title, abstracts or contents)
• Does not require an exact match
• Generates comparatively large number of
hits (not precise)
• Good if you are not familiar with
terminology

Subject
• Looks in one place – subject
• Usually requires an exact match between
your term and a pre-set list of terms
• Precise
• Can be used after keyword search has
identified specific subjects
Results - POLAR
• Icon at the left will let you know whether the material
is a book, ebook, periodical, etc.
• Location lets you know where the book is. Some
books may be located in the Law Library.
• Call number is what you need to find the book on the
shelf.
• Status lets you know if the book is checked out or is
available.
Databases
• Used mostly for locating newspaper and magazine articles
• Access through http://www.onu.edu/library
• Some databases are multidisciplinary and some are subject-specific.
• Some are available to general public via InfOhio and OPLIN
Multi-disciplinary Databases
• Academic Search Complete (EBSCO)
– Good for general searches
– Great place to start for most topics
• Points of View Reference
– Good for any topic that has multiple
sides
– Browse by Category or Search
Database Search Strategies
• Use limiters such as date and language.
• Use and to combine keywords and
narrow search.
• Use or to combine keywords and expand
search.
• Use not to eliminate terms.

Printing, Downloading, Saving
• The library’s catalog and most databases
allow you to mark entries and then save
or e-mail them.
• If you have a flash memory device, you
can save articles to it.
• Today, you should be able to print without
charge in the labs.
