Like usual, there were highs (the great teamwork displayed on a daily basis in our district) and lows. How we handle the lows in our life is very telling to others who observe us. With that being said, this week has been an outstanding one. I have been involved with different groups and have seen some tremendous work being done. As I mentioned last week, our Citizens’ Committee who have been providing input for the possible bond issue, made recommendations for the Board of Education when they met this week. Together they are providing recommendations to Assistant Superintendent John Fattal and me; they continue to look at what is best for the district and not just for their grade or their department. We have 29 teachers who are a part of this hard-working group. ird, was the high school staff at their staff meeting regarding what could be done to improve student opportunities. John facilitated the meeting and it was very exciting to see the staff brainstorming and working together to help us improve and make modifications to figure out ways to increase student achievement. Fourth was the Corunna Middle School staff. Because of circumstances outside of their control, the 4-7 staff, with no complaints, gave the gym to the high school students and staff and made adjustments in their schedule (like having the 4th graders eat lunch in their classroom) recently. Fiſth, has been the work of elementary staff in their Professional Learning Communities. Many staff have found how valuable it is to have all grade level staff or specific departments work together to provide consistent instruction and develop new methods of delivering it. I continue to see progress as people continue to work with the perspective of looking at “how we can make Corunna better vs what is better for me.” I see our community realizing the benefits or our decision to right-size and are supporting our mission. We will succeed because all of us (community, students, staff, board and administration) are working together on the Cavalier team. anksgiving In closing, it is my hope that all of you had a Happy anksgiving. Each of us has plenty to be grateful for in our lives – please take the time to enjoy family and friends and reflect on what the day means. It’s GREAT to be GOLD! T-shirts were sold and both money and food were collected by either 4th block classes or 8th grade homerooms. ABC 12 was here Nov. 14 to celebrate with our students during the morning news cast. e week went fantastic as 1,928 pounds of food ended up being donated to the food bank at the Corunna United Methodist Church. e students also generated $6,000 of funds which will be donated to the 13 local food banks through the Shiawassee Hunger Network. We also got a hand from Dave and Rose Harvey who took $1 donations for their fabulous cookies. Congratulations CHS on a great food drive! State Recognition for Cavaliers During the last two months students in Corunna’s FFA Botany Class have raised 120 chickens for the State Broiler Contest. e contest is held when the birds are five weeks old. e entries from the class along with eight other chapter members visited Munsell’s Poultry Processing in Fowlerville to help process the chickens and see them be evaluated. From the 12 teams which were entered in the contest, Corunna had three receive state recognition. e Chapter entry from Pen 1 received a gold award and the chapter entry from pen 2 and Hanna Dutcher received silver awards. Corunna’s Marching Band of Gold marched in the 30th Annual Silver Bells Parade in Lansing on November 21. ey were among 12 area marching bands and 70 illuminated floats. e Marching Cavs are excited to close their 2014 marching season with the Corunna Light Parade on Friday, December 5. ey welcome you to attend their Christmas Concert 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 17 in the high school gym. CHS Knocks Out Hunger!The high school student council and the FFA chapter kicked off the annual food drive to “Knock out Hunger” Nov. 5. T-shirts were sold and both money and food were collected by either 4th block classes or 8th grade homerooms. ABC 12 was here Nov. 14 to celebrate with our students during the morning news cast. The week went fantastic as 1,928 pounds of food ended up being donated to the food bank at the Corunna United Methodist Church. Eileen McGuckin and Hope Crabtree turned middle school teacher Mr. Nellis’ closet into a new learning environment. Mr. Nellis thought the closet would be a good space for students to get extra help and have a quiet place to work in small groups. Eileen and Hope’s design represents a pastel abstract bird in a tree with spiral patterns.
