Semester programme

I. Corrosion – general scope………..…….2hours

Highlights in corrosion area, high-tech applications.

Scientific aspects, types of corrosion, pH-potential diagrams, nobleness, passivity, etching of metals.

Key theories in corrosion, actual research in the field, sophisticated techniques.

II. Atmospheric corrosion………………….2 hours

Principle, mechanism, legislative.Dose-response function, role of material factors, corrosivity of atmosphere, role of exposition site: urban, rural, industrial atmosphere.

Monitoring techniques: gravimetrical analysis, measurements of potential, corrosion rate etc.

Practical training: run-off effect of zinc from hypermarkets roofs.

III. Prediction methods in corrosion……….2 hours

Backgroundof prediction techniques, data mining, statistical treatment of data, formation of robust databases.

Example of successful application of artificial neural networks (ANN) on prediction of atmospheric corrosion.

Practical training: modeling of corrosion with predictor using ANN software.

IV. Bimetallic corrosion …………………....2 hours

Principle, affecting parameters, methods and prevention.

Evans tests, role of galvanic series, environment and design of components.

Practical training: 3D maps of corrosion potential using Matlab.

Technology inquiry: Detection of safety of bimetallic joints in construction industry - Hotel Hilton.

V. Corrosion in food industry ………….....2 hours

History of aluminium and tin as top metals in food industry.Application of stainless steel and others. Role of pH and oxygen in release of ions from food containers.

Examples of failures in food industry due to the corrosion.

Practical training: Honey as corrosion inhibitor, attack of cola-cola, juice on Al can.Attack of ananas, tomato juice on tin can.

VI. Corrosion in biomedicine………….......2 hours

Biodegradable metals, actual research and development in the field, implants. Corrosion of metals in human body conditions.

Magnesium, magnesium-aluminium alloys, titanium implants.

Examples of Ti implants with different surface treatment and structure on final properties.

Practical training: CrMo stainless steel in simulated body solution. Role of pH and allergy as side effect.

VII. Corrosion monitoring……..……..…....2 hours

Actual research activities in non-destructive techniques in corrosion. Corrosion sensors in nuclear and automotive industry.

Practical training: Electrochemical noise analysis for assessment of quality of zinc coatings and thin organic coatings (TOC) in automotive industry.

VIII. Corrosion in power plant industry.…....2 hours

Hot topics, technological inquiries, monitoring and prevention of corrosion in nuclear power plant, classical power plant and ECO-plant (biomass combustion).

Examples of corrosion failures: zinc pipelines for hot water, inhibitors for carbon steel in water cooling system, corrosion of metallic parts of water sensors, inspection of energy boiler in biomass combustion etc.

IX. Corrosion in gas and oil industry.…......2 hours

Cathodic protection of pipelines, monitoring and prevention of corrosion of underground structures. Non-destructive techniques for assessment of life-time of pipelines.

Technological inquiries, failure analysis: mineralization as alternative protection on defect parts of steel pipelines, developing prototype for non-destructive testing of life-time of X60, X70 types of steel etc.

X. Corrosion detective stories ……………2 hours

Selected failures analysis: flakes on chromium wheels, paint adhesion problems on stripes in automotive etc…

Technology inquires: corrosivity of ECO-salts on cars, testing of aphalte coatings in salt spray for railway wagoons, titanium anode life-time, detection of Cr VI on tin, quality of coatings on cars etc…

XI. Student´s corrosion problem ……..…..2 hours

Students will choose own corrosion problem: e.g. measurements of corrosion rate of selected construction in rain from Czestochowa, run-off effect of aluminium from beer, café Al can, corrosion rate of Cu, brass coin in sea etc...

XII. How to write first scientific craft ….....2 hours

Guide for students, example of good vs. bad presentations, how to sell yourself on job market etc…
