PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Engaging Your Audience with Your Message and Your Slides

The purpose of this workshop is to understand and apply the elements

necessary to create and deliver an engaging slide presentation. The

ability to communicate data is a specialized communication skill. The

communication strategy for using data is not just about deciding what

content needs to be transferred. More importantly, it is about deciding

what strategy will allow the audience to understand, remember, and

have the ability to apply the information. In this workshop, we will

focus not just on delivery, but also on how to use strategic

communication to develop messages, so they are memorable and

useful (not just a "data dump").

Workshop Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will:

Distinguish the key elements of what makes successful vs. unsuccessful messages

Understand the importance of and develop the skills needed to chunk information, determine

a governing message and ensure that the message is relevant to the specific audience

Compare and contrast the persuasive vs. narrative structures of speeches, so that even in

short time frames the key points of the governing message are delivered

Understand and practice techniques to help bridge what the learner already knows to the new

information being received

Learn the three V's (visual, vocal and verbal) and how they impact the audience perceptions

of your presentation

Determine what characteristics of a speaker add to or detract from the quality of their

presentation

Creating Credibility in Your Academic and Corporate Writing

In the time-starved Internet world, where everyone’s a writer and

everyone’s a reader, the demand for literacy is more intense than

it has ever been. The ability to articulate ideas in smart, tight

writing is crucial for scholars working in academic and corporate

contexts. This workshop will cover the conventions of scholarly

documents such as papers for academic journals along with

workplace genres such as reports and e-mails. The workshop will provide you with pointers about how

words work so that you can write the concise, lucid, nuanced, and compelling prose that is so valued

by readers. It will sharpen your writing and enhance your editing competence and self-confidence.

Workshop Facilitator

Associate Professor Roslyn Petelin convenes the award-winning

postgraduate program in Writing, Editing, and Publishing at The University of

Queensland (UQ) and has been the recipient of teaching excellence awards

from UQ and the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. She edited the

11:15 AM – 12:30 PM / Room 750 SPECIAL PANEL PRESENTATION #2:

Corporate Communication and Online Impression Management

Panel underwritten by ABC – Association for Business Communication

Originally applied to the behaviors of individuals, impression management theory maintains that verbal and nonverbal practices of persons are often consciously or unconsciously selected in order to influence the perceptions of others. During recent decades, impression management has also referred to the practices of corporations and other organizations to create public images that enhance or sustain institutional reputations. Interactive Web sites and social media offer promising opportunities for the effective management of public perceptions by professional communicators. In this presentation, three members of the Association for Business Communication (ABC) offer studies intended to identify the great potential—and also the hazards—of online corporate and professional impression management.

[email protected]

Mia is a third year doctoral student at Aalto University School of Business in Helsinki, Finland, in the Department of Management Studies’ unit of Organizational Communication. Her research topic is knowledge creation and brokering in virtual environments, such as social media in internal communication. She is looking at the topic from two perspectives, thus, combining the lenses of the research on communities of practice (CoP) and communication as constitutive of organization (CCO). The main reason behind her interest for this particular topic lies in her background as a communications manager and a consultant in various business areas. Working in those positions, she found it frustrating that internal communication was so much more difficult for most of these organizations to deal with. During her former career she focused mainly on the external communication, PR and marketing communication. However, she was also responsible for the internal communication at several levels. Now, she would like to learn how and to what extent she can use academic research as a means to understanding the challenges faced in organizations, both in internal as well as in external communications. Moreover, her goal is to find solutions for the organizational communication practices derived from academic research. Steven Lim

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

An International Journal

Corporate Communications: An International Journal addresses theory and practice arising from the awareness that corporate communication, as the name implies, lies at the heart of effective strategic management, planning and control. The journal recognizes the impact that new digital media technologies are having on news management and the monitoring and evaluation of corporate identity, organizational reputation and overall performance. Successful internal and external integration of corporate communication programmes involves all stakeholder groups and interested parties. Corporate advertising, public and media relations go beyond the gatekeeping functions of personnel development and marketing to embrace the interdisciplinary, strategic framework of corporate communication.
