This issue, we dream a little dream of bohemian beauty and ethereal gowns,

secret retreats tucked away in heavenly glades, hazy nostalgia, pastel blooms

and delicious ice cream.

Lovelane Caravans is the perfect place to start. Nestled in a remote corner of the

Lizard, the cluster of retro caravans and hippie buses provided a brilliantly eclectic

backdrop for our bohemian bridal special. ‘Groovy Kind of Love’ is a whimsical

celebration of free-spirited fashion, where ethereal chiffon meets the coolest bridal

jewellery. And, on a balmy May day, we relished our time wandering the secret

gardens, wisteria-draped nooks and blossom-cloaked orchards of Lantallack – the

picture-perfect setting to capture gowns lavished in frothy tulle and luxe lace. See the

results in ‘Sunshine of Your Love.’

With my own wedding looming ever closer, I can relate to every bride’s desire to look

the very image of radiance come the wedding day. While the sheer happiness of the

occasion goes a long way in delivering that wonderful glow we all crave, it certainly

doesn’t hurt to have a little help along the way. The beauty, fitness and nutrition

experts deliver the lowdown on top-to-toe gorgeousness in ‘Some Body to Love.’

As this issue’s breathtaking selection of real weddings reveal, couples are growing

increasingly creative with their wedding décor. We serve up some downright delicious

ideas this issue. See ‘Sweet Dreams’ for our jelly and ice cream themed décor, which

was as tasty as it was pretty! It’s at time like this – when I’m tucking into an ice cream

sundae on a rainy Thursday afternoon – that I realise quite how much I love running a

wedding magazine. This love deepened further on a visit to The Bay Hotel in Newquay

where I enjoyed a day of chocolate and cocktail making – see my verdict and the latest

on the crafty hen trend in ‘Make, Do and Hens’.

Finally, big thanks to those of you who came to the Wed Show. It was an awesome

day. I hope the show – and this latest issue – inspires some breathtakingly beautiful

weddings!

Bring a novel and coolly colourful aesthetic to your celebration courtesy of

Sunbeam Jackie. Perfect for some shelter from the unpredictable British

weather – whether it’s sunshine or rain – their fabulous parasols are a

perfect way to add extra shots of colour and pattern into your day.

The combined backgrounds in sculpture, film and costume – together with a passion

for beautiful handmade objects – of Cornwall-based couple Charlie and Katy Napier

is the driving force behind the venture. Already a hit at a number of UK festivals

including Glastonbury and Bestival, the handmade parasols are striking a chord with

couples either seeking a festival feel for their day or wishing to create some cool

contrasts that complement their colour scheme. Available to buy or hire, choose

from 2m or 3m diameter fully waterproof parasols in a full spectrum of colours,

depending on your needs and vision. Whether you wish to have a blessing under

a mini canopy, scatter them throughout your al fresco venue or use them for arty

photo opportunities, they’ll make a characterful and charismatic addition to any

event. Contact Charlie and Katy through their website to commission your parasol.

WORDS OF LOVE…‘To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.’

David Viscott

The exquisite new shoe collection from Rachel Simpson has arrived

at Lavender Rose in Penryn. The latest trends see a glorious return to

elegance with simple designs featuring intricate detailing and dainty

stitchwork that are romantically reminiscent of shoemaking from a

bygone era. Reflecting current dress colour trends, the 2013 collection

showcases soft and warm tones accompanied by the softest metallic

suede and pearlised leather for a worn, antique aesthetic. Brides may

choose from muted gold and nude tones to traditional ivory hues with a

contemporary twist, incorporating metallic accents and two-tone fusions

of colour and texture.

The new collection focuses on mid and low heel heights to coolly take you from

day into night. With every shoe lovingly handmade in Spain and using leather

linings to ensure ultimate comfort, you can dance the night away in supreme style.

Whether you favour modern chic or vintage glamour, they make a show-stealing

and affordable addition to any wedding outfit.

CHIC SHAPESCut a fabulous figure as you glide down the aisle in a stylish and swoonsome silhouettewords Hannah May

Forget the current craze for colour for a moment and

focus on form. From curve-hugging numbers to oversized

everything, the latest collections are awash with striking

silhouettes and lust-worthy lines.

Whether you wish for something subtle and sleek or a statement-

making spectacle, the catwalks at New York International Bridal

Week and Barcelona Bridal Week showcased some spellbinding

shapes to enchant the faint-hearted to the wild-hearted.

Remember that dressing to your body type is key. Flaunt the hottest

frocks by choosing a design that suits both your figure and fantasy for

an alluring and on-trend look.

Streamlined and sexy

Whether modern or retro, form-fitting frocks have seen a heady resurgence

of late. Particularly present within era wear, think sleek and glam ‘40s silk,

beautiful ‘60s boho columns with lashings of lace and luxuriously long, curve-

sculpting sheaths.

Remember that the new rule here is to mix and match in order to nod to a time

rather than replicate it, thereby achieving a personalised take on old world glamour

and a look of nouveau romance. Consider more modern versions of old school

silhouettes such as cocktail dresses, pretty proms and body-con styles.

Another twist on tailored fashion is the two-piece, which is taking the form of trouser

suits or shift dresses with cropped jackets for timeless ‘Jackie O’ inspired chic.

Either high fashion androgynous, statuesque power suit or uber soft and effortlessly

feminine, trouser suits and twinsets smack of classic and self-assured styling.

Introduce silks and lace for a sensuous edge or opt for starched satins or stiff fabrics

for a sharply defining and role-reversing look.

Flared and fabulous

Kicking out anywhere from the waist to the ankle – a little flare is all the

rage. One of the hottest trends is Spanish style, featuring flamenco frills,

high necklines, flashes of colour and, for the ultra daring, a sexy show of leg.

Mermaid gowns are still reigning supreme for an achingly romantic aesthetic,

funnelling out from the knees or lower calves to accentuate curves and add another

gorgeous hourglass to the shape.

A-lines are also stealing the scene, nipping in at the waist and fanning out for a shape

that suits all and oozes timeless and tasteful elegance.

Breathtaking ballgowns

Synonymous with fairytale fashion and princess pretty, ballgowns are

assuredly de rigueur. Unashamedly full skirted – contemporary forms present

big, sweeping swathes of multiple underskirts topped with layers of material

for dramatic, sashaying style.

Although modern ballgowns might appear stiflingly heavy, they are composed of

the lightest fabrics to allow the bride to breeze down the aisle accompanied by a

whirlwind of dynamic movement.

The peplum is one of the hottest trends of the moment. Originating from the Greek

word for tunic, it is essentially a short overskirt attached to or flaring out of a dress

– perfect for giving greater curves to boyish frames. Have one as your ‘transformer’ –

removable items such as skirts, trains and capes to move you from day to night for an

easy costume change – and receive top style points.

Also consider two-tiered skirts, extra frills and appliqués or broderie anglaise for

modern versions of the oh-so romantic ballgown.

Heavenly hemlines

A close consideration of hemlines comprises an

easy way to manipulate or create shape as well as

individualise your outfit. Dropped hems are one of

the most lusted after, while tea-length and higher

– especially micro minis – are also causing a stir on

the catwalks.

Alternatively, super long lengths via floor-length gowns

and extended trains ooze fairytale romance, the idea

being to sweep up your entire congregation in your

dazzling wake.

In short, length definitely matters, and it’s a polarising

trend. Think impossibly long and romantic or wickedly

wild and daring – so a huge trail of billowing fabric

or super short dresses – and even cropped tops and

midriff baring styles. Depending on your personal style

and vision, there’s a shape that will stunningly suit for

fashion-forward brides.

SOME BODY TO LOVE

SOME BODY TO LOVE

The most photographed day of your life is

looming on the horizon. Who wouldn’t want to

look their most beautiful? After all, those images

are going to be staring back at you from the

mantelpiece for many years to come, and we all

want to be captured at our most radiant. We’ve

canvassed the region’s experts in beauty, fitness

and nutrition to kick-start your bridal beauty

regime.

LOVE ME ‘DODon’t leave the good hair day to chance on your

wedding day. The right combination of preparation

and products will ensure your locks are in tip-top

condition for their close-up. “Good conditioned hair

will have more shine and hold a hairstyle longer on the

wedding day,” says Francesca Chapman of Number 8

Hairdressing (number8hairdressing.com).

And, as with all beauty routines, the earlier you

start caring for your hair the better. “Use a good

separate shampoo and conditioner and, in conjunction

with your normal routine, use a heavier conditioning

treatment/mask at least two to three months prior

to the wedding,” advises Sarah Hooper of Capella

(capellacornwall.co.uk). Regular cuts will also enhance

the condition of your hair. “Keep up your regular

haircuts every 6–8 weeks,” advises Francesca. “Your

hair will grow faster and in better condition if you

keep up your regular trims.”

As the wedding fast approaches, it’s time to take care

of the colour. “Have your hair coloured and cut one

week before the wedding so the colour settles down

by the day itself,” says Francesca.

The treatment:

Spiezia Head in Heaven

Escape the planning pressure with this deeply relaxing

treatment, which includes slow Tui Na Chinese

massage techniques to rebalance and calm the upper

body and facial pressure point massage to clear the

mind. Available at various spas across Cornwall.

www.spieziaorganics.com

Spiezia Head and Hair Oil: This organic potion

has a three-pronged effect: conditioning the scalp,

stimulating the follicles and encouraging healthy hair.

And, as a flaky scalp isn’t a good look for the wedding

day – this luscious little number also alleviates flakiness

in restoring the natural balance of the skin.

www.spieziaorganics.com

FACE FACTSThere’s no avoiding it. Whether it’s seeking the

emotional tremble of your lip at the altar or observing

the joyful gaze as your husband waxes lyrical about

your beauty during the speeches, everyone’s going to

be looking at your face – all day long. So ensure your

complexion glows, your eyes sparkle and your brows

perfectly frame your features.

Beyond the balanced diet, regular exercise and plenty

of water, there are a few other tricks that can help

boost your complexion. Adopt a strict cleansing,

toning and moisturising routine as early as possible

during the preparations. “Add a face treatment oil into

your nightly skin regime once a week in the lead up to

the wedding day. I recommend one of our ESPA Face

Treatment Oils,” says Mireya Bird of Fistral Spa. “Also,

use ESPA 24 Hour Replenishing Eye Moisturiser daily

to brighten the eyes in the month running up to the

wedding.”

A regular facial, which is tailored to your skin’s needs,

will provide intensive skin care. “Everyone’s skin is

different so a trial facial is recommended a couple of

months before the wedding to discern how long the

results last for after the facial,” says Mireya. “Have

your last pre-wedding facial approximately a week

before the wedding depending on the results of the

first facial.”

HD Brows at Facebase

This seven-step corrective procedure transforms

your brows into a gorgeously flattering shape to

compliment the contours of your face. “Book a

session once a month during the lead up to the

wedding, with the final session a couple of days before

the wedding,” advises HD Brows specialist Ella Butler.

MYscara at Facebase

Flutter lashes that would make Marilyn Monroe wince

with this 100% waterproof formula that individually

coats the lashes like regular mascara and lasts up to

four weeks. “Even with regular waterproof mascara

little bits will fall off when you blink, which can be

noticeable on close-up shots. This doesn’t happen with

MYscara as once it’s there it doesn’t budge,” says Ella.

Book the treatment a few days before the wedding

for lovely lashes that last throughout the honeymoon. www.facebasestudio.com

ARMED AND FABULOUSUnless you’re doing a Kate Middleton, chances are

your arms are going to be exposed for at least some of

the celebrations. Many of us suffer some form of arm

angst, whether it’s the bingo wing effect, dull skin or

keratosis pilaris – otherwise known as those red dots

on the upper arms. With the right sculpting, treatments

and products, you can look forward to arms Michelle

Obama would be proud to flash come the nuptials.

The workout: “The right toning exercises will give you

nice lean arms and shoulders, which look fantastic with

a strapless wedding dress,” says personal trainer Wanda

Summers (wandasummers.co.uk). “Incidentally, enhancing

and defining the muscles in your shoulders will give you

the appearance of having a slimmer waist and hips.”

“For shoulders, use either two 2kg dumbbells or two

3kg dumbbells, depending on your fitness and strength

levels,” says Wanda. “Stand tall with feet about hip

width apart with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder

height. Lift the right hand either in a fist or holding the

dumbbell in front of you, whilst simultaneously holding

the left dumbbell out to the side. Now alternate so that

the left hand is in front and the right hand is out to the

side. Movements should be controlled and smooth.

Repeat ten times. After you’ve done one set, repeat it

all again another two times.”

As for toning those tricky triceps, it’s all about the

tricep dips. “Place your hands behind you on the edge

of a bench or sturdy chair, elbows pointing straight

behind you (this is crucial if you want to minimise

those bingo wings),” says Wanda. “Legs should be out

in front with your bottom off the bench – the further

away the legs, the harder the exercise. Lower your

body off the bench as far as you can without actually

sitting on the ground. Then raise yourself back up

driving through your arms. Brace your stomach. Start

with ten repetitions, then repeat with nine repetitions,

then eight, then seven etc. Rest between each set.

When you get to just one, lower yourself and hold for

the count of three and then slowly raise yourself back

up. As you progress, you can build your sets up all

the way back up to ten repetitions again. You’ll need

to perform these exercises three times a week every

week, starting preferably at least six weeks before the

wedding,” advises Wanda.

The treatment:St Michael’s Cornish Body Polish at St Michael’s

Hotel and Spa

Utilising Cornish Sea Salt and a luscious blend of

aromatic oils, this invigorating full body polish leaves

your skin radiant and silken.

www.stmichaelshotel.co.uk

Trevarno Honey and Sugar Scrub: A luxurious

blend of organic ingredients, a swift massage of this

sweet and zesty potion into damp skin leaves your skin

impossibly smooth and deliciously scented. Repeat the

process three times a week to clear the skin and make

it more receptive to moisturisers during the run-up to

the wedding. www.trevarnoskincare.co.uk

TOP TUMDreaming of accessorising your gown with a trim tum?

Fantasising about a bikini-clad honeymoon? Following

some simple nutritional and toning tips will give your

waistline a last minute boost.

The diet: If you’d like to shed a few pounds before the

wedding, ensure you take the healthy and sustainable

route – that means no fad diets. Nutritional therapist

Sally Gordon (nutrition4wellbeing.co.uk) has some top

tips for sustainable weight loss: “Never skip breakfast.

Eating breakfast sets your metabolism up for the day

and is basic in controlling your weight long term. How

you eat at the start of the day often determines how

you eat late afternoon and into the evening.”

“Fuel up rather than fill up,” says Sally. “Aim for three

small meals and two snacks daily. This avoids the

rollercoaster that can leave you tired and hungry and

more likely to eat high sugar and fatty foods. ‘Grazing’

helps to avoid those energy dips.”

“Eat protein with complex carbohydrates – this

combination gives a steady flow of energy throughout

the day, avoids triggering insulin which in turn

minimises the potential for fat storage,” continues Sally.

“The best sources of quality protein are eggs, poultry,

red meat, fish, soya, quinoa, beans and lentils. Sources

of complex carbohydrates are wholegrain bread and

pasta, brown rice, fruit and vegetables.”

Then comes the question of how much? “Take time

to learn portion sizes – sometimes just using a smaller

plate does the trick. Eating smaller portions together

with healthier choices and eating slowly naturally

restricts food intake and helps control weight, helps

digestion and provides the body with good nutrient

levels”.

Don’t forget about the fluids: “We often mistake

hunger for thirst. By the time you feel thirsty you are

already dehydrated,” says Sally. “Aim to sip 1.5L to 2L

of water daily. Looking at a large bottle of water can be

off putting. Buy the small 500ml bottles and refill them.

You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to achieve your

water goal.”

The workout: “A flat stomach is about 80 percent diet

related and the best thing you can do is to burn fat, but

you can certainly help things along by toning up those

abdominal muscles and tightening the waist,” says

Wanda. “Again, you’ll need to do these exercises three

times a week every week.”

“The ‘Captain’s Chair’ is a simple exercise you can do

anywhere. Perch on the end of a chair as far as you can

sit before falling off and place just your big toes on the

floor. Take your hands behind you and hold onto either

the back of the chair or under it. Brace your stomach

and make sure your back is flat and lean back slightly.

Keeping your stomach in, raise your knees, aiming

towards your chest. Then slowly lower your feet back

down so that your toes are very lightly touching the

floor. Repeat ten times. Make sure you do three sets

of ten repetitions. Eventually you can work up to three

sets of 20. If you find this too easy, don’t let your feet

touch the floor at all, and straighten your legs more.”

“Once you’ve completed three sets, extend your legs

in front of you so that they are straight,” continues

Wanda. “Slowly and smoothly kick your legs up and

down in the air for 30 seconds. Rest. Finally, whilst still

perched on the chair, raise your legs in front of you

again and open and close them for 30 seconds. If you

really want to work that stomach hard, repeat this

whole routine one more time through.”

The treatment:Lava Shell Tummy and Back Massage at The

Cornwall Hotel Spa and Estate

This wonder treatment simultaneously boosts the

digestive system, releases emotional stress and serves

as a holistic colonic cleanse, thanks to the motion of

hot lava shells and lavender and peppermint oils.

THE BIG DAY BREAKFAST

Yes, you’ll probably have a few butterflies in your

tummy on the morning of the wedding. But make

sure that’s not all you have as you embark on

the biggest day of your life. “Two eggs scrambled

either on their own or with mushrooms and

grilled tomatoes and a slice of wholegrain wheat

or rye toast with a little butter is an excellent

sustaining breakfast,” suggests nutritional therapist

Sally Gordon. “Alternatively, go for a small pot of

low or full fat plain bio yoghurt served with a bowl

of berry fruits topped with toasted almonds plus a

slice of rye or wheat toast if desired.”

THE BIG COUNTDOWNFollow Wanda Summers’ tips for a last-minute body boost

Stick to the stairs. Better still, take the stairs two at a time to tone your bottom.

Walk as much as possible. Avoid escalators and lifts and park the car at the furthest end of the car park to burn those last minute calories.

Restrict foods that contain carbohydrates as much as possible during the week before the wedding. All carbohydrates need a lot of water to hydrate and this leads to water retention.

Zumba has taken Cornwall by storm. Get down with the trend and burn calories the fun way to a soundtrack of infectious rhythms.

Avoid all alcohol during the week prior to your wedding, as alcohol increases your oestrogen production and higher oestrogen levels increase water retention in your body, making you look bloated and heavy.

Go on an outdoor boot camp. A growing number of boot camps are now available across the region. Being outdoors is known to boost your mood and it can be fun challenging the elements.

Hire a personal trainer. Many personal trainers offer wedding fitness packages, which are personalised to get you the shape you want several weeks prior to your wedding.

For more information and training tips from Wanda Summers, visit www.wandasummers.co.uk

LEG WORKWhether you’ve opted for a cute tea dress, a

thigh-baring slit or a micro-mini, or simply dream

of accessorising your bikini with toned legs on

the honeymoon, you’ll be flashing those pins with

confidence courtesy of these simple sculpting tricks.

The workout: “Get shapely legs and a toned bum

at the same time by doing wide-legged squats,”

says Wanda. “Start with a wide stance with your

toes pointing out and brace your stomach. Your

back should be straight and chest facing forward.

With your arms out in front, drop your hips until

your thighs are parallel to the ground. Next push

yourself up to the start position and really squeeze

those bum muscles tightly at the top. Imagine the

squeeze drawing you up. Hold this squeeze for a

few seconds at the top of each movement. Repeat

15 to 20 times and build up your repetitions so that

you can perform 30 without stopping. Then do two

more sets.”

Step-ups are another surefire sculpting trick: “If you

don’t possess a step box, find a daunting set of steps

and step up them to the very top at a fairly quick

pace,” says Wanda. “Relax your breathing as you

do so, otherwise you will get out of breath too fast.

Once at the top, give yourself a quick pat on the

back and then go back down them. Take your time

to go down. Then, go back up. Work up to it so

you can do this at least three times. Perform these

exercises three times a week every week.”

THE ART OF THE WEDDING RING

Tolkien was right on the money. Yet many a

couple are paying so much attention to the frills

that they’re forgetting one of the most important

purchases of the entire affair.

Your marriage is your own epic story and it’s only

fitting that you, too, find the one ring to rule them

all – otherwise, once the gown is packed away and

the memories begin to blur, your digits might well be

dressed with a less-then-inspired memento of your day.

Adele Atkinson from Michael Spiers (michaelspiers.

com) explains: “Most couples come into the store

thinking the wedding band is a fairly small thing to get

sorted in comparison to the flowers/dress/food and

guests, but it is the only thing from the big day that

you will wear, everyday, for the rest of your life!” It’s

not simply something to merely tick off the ‘to do’ list:

“The wedding ring embodies your relationship and the

vows taken in marriage.”

In fact, you’re joining almost 5,000 years of mythologies

and history that reputedly stems from ancient Egyptian

times, where rings were first fashioned from the fertile

plains of the River Nile. Intricately linked to their sense

of fortune, the Pharaoh’s people used rushes, reeds,

sedges and papyrus to twist and braid into rings to

symbolise eternity.

As with other ancient cultures and civilizations, the

circle represented infinity and the cyclical nature of

the world that was also signified with the widespread

worship of the sun and the moon. In addition, the hole

in the centre was not perceived as an empty gulf, but

rather a potent signifier of possibility: being the gateway

to things both known and unknown and, by wearing

a ring, the wearer was inviting eternal love into their

world.

The position of the ring also has poignancy. The third

finger on the left hand was believed to have a

special vein called the vena amoris – the

‘vein of love’ – running from the ring

finger directly to the heart.

So rather than rushing with

the rings, take your time

to select something

special that represents

you as a couple and

serves as a beautiful

and everlasting echo

of your love.

Adele’s advice is

simple: “The best

way to choose the

perfect ring is to try

them on. At Michael

Spiers, we have a master

set of wedding bands in

the different profiles in different

weights and thicknesses. Once the shape of the band

has been chosen, with the use of the iPad, it can be

customised to your tastes by the addition of diamonds

or even applying a satin finish.”

Customisation is a key element, as more couples are

looking for a unique and personal keepsake of their day

and significant representation of their relationship.

Ring designer Ed Wilson from Gauge Gallery in St.

Ives (gaugegallery.co.uk) believes there is much

misperception concerning bespoke designs: “Many

people think that bespoke wedding rings will be just

too expensive so don’t even go and speak to a ring

designer in the first place. One of our goals is to

encourage more people to think about contemporary

wedding rings that are handmade just for them.” Many

of Ed’s rings are comprised of two bands that rotate

and roll over each other, further signifying the marital

union and intermingling of lives.

Designer-maker Justin Duance (justind.co.uk) has

also seen a surge in idiosyncrasy where it comes to

wedding rings. “In terms of trends, I am noticing a lot

more people wanting something a little more individual

that means something to them.” Your personalisation

process might comprise a handcrafted bespoke

design or even a poignant inscription. The selection

of wedding rings at Michael Spiers can be inscribed

with your initials, your wedding date, some meaningful

words or a design of your choice.

The choice of metal is a key decision. Current trends

are seeing certain metals soar in popularity. “People are

buying a lot more palladium than ever before, which is

a great choice for people on a budget as it is basically

the same as platinum in strength and colour, but a lot

cheaper,’’ says Justin. “I have noticed a lot more men

choosing it instead of white gold.”

“Palladium is named after Pallas who, in Greek

mythology, was the companion of Athene, goddess of

art,” says Ed. “It is a light, bright precious metal, which

is great to work with.”

Moving away from traditional gold and silver, Adele

observes another modern metallic trend. “One of the

most popular metals has to be platinum. It is the purest,

rarest and hardest precious metal so it’s perfect for

items that are worn everyday. It is also great if you have

sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic.”

“Yellow gold is making a return and rose gold is very

popular now. Both can be made up in 18/9 carat so

we can cater to all budgets. We strongly recommend

wearing the same metal rings together due to different

strengths of the metals and their wearing qualities over

time.”

Justin agrees. “Rose gold seems to be making a

resurgence. Brides seem to be buying chunkier

wedding rings, which make more of a statement and

also feel it is important to match their partner’s in some

way. Men are also buying chunkier rings and seem to

be making a clear choice or statement rather than

accepting the standard wedding band. They are a lot

more confident – even choosing to have a bit of bling

on their ring!”

“Symbology definitely seems important to people even

if it’s just choosing the same type of metal as each

other”, says Justin.

“...you’re joining almost 5,000

years of mythologies

and history that reputedly stems

from ancient Egyptian times.”

THE ART OF THE WEDDING RING

With various options to have your wedding band designed and

created especially for you, some couples are alternatively riding the

wave that’s hitting weddings on all fronts: the DIY movement.

“There is now a whole industry where couples can pay to go on

a course and make their own wedding rings,” says Justin. “Either

this or using some inherited gold and having it remade into

their wedding rings is popular. We get lots of people

wanting to inlay some woods that mean something

to them, perhaps from a special tree or place.

We use salvaged wood from Cornish boats

or ancient forests to make rings that are a

little different. We have found melting

down people’s inherited rings is very

popular.”

Ed also crafts Next Generation

jewellery, whereby old family

jewellery is used as the basis for

a new piece. Whether it’s the

diamond from a grandmother’s ring

or the platinum from an aunt’s pendant,

elements from the original jewellery can

be utilised to create a piece to treasure,

which is rich in historic and emotional attachment.

In short, don’t settle for a last minute gesture with minimal

thought. Engage your own individual style and find inspiration in

yourself and your spouse-to-be to create or choose something just

as captivating as your love – after all, that’s the true meaning of

marriage and the reason for the ring in the first place.

top tips from theexperts:

‘Work out your budget and don’t leave it until the last minute.’

‘Do your research on the different metals. There is a lot of misinformation out there.’

‘All plain standard wedding bands, unless you know the person making them, are from the same couple of places so they should be fairly evenly matched in price. This price is based on the weight. Of course, this changes when you add stones or different finishes.’

‘The thickness and profile of a ring effects ring size. A wider ring needs a bigger size.’

‘Remember that plating will wear off.’

A wave of hip new hen parties is now available in Cornwall. Take a skill or handmade creation home alongside the memories on one of these merry making experienceswords Rebecca Matthews

Forget painting the town red. These days,

you’re more likely to find a hen party painting

a piece of pottery. Or perhaps fashioning a

fascinator or crafting a bracelet (although

painting the town red may well feature

somewhere in the activity schedule).

Yes – the modern hen do is all about making stuff.

Whether it’s moulding soap, weaving willows

or mixing up a heady potion of liquors – there’s

something therapeutic about seeing something

created before your eyes – and with your very own

hands.

And the best bit? You get to take something

home other than the usual pounding head, phallic

paraphernalia and pink cowgirl attire (although, again,

some of these elements may figure along the way).

Whether it’s the sweet aroma of handmade soap

lingering on your hands during the run-up to the big

day, the satisfaction of seeing all those handcrafted

fascinators perched on your hens’ heads at the

wedding, or the ability to knock up a couple of

mojitos for guests popping over for some post-

wedding drinks – the results and sweet memories of

your hen party might echo throughout the wedding

and beyond. At your service, we’ve sampled some of

DOMESTIC GODDESS WEEKEND AT THE BAY HOTELPerched seductively close to the breakers of Fistral Beach, the holiday vibe is as palpable as the bracing sea air when you arrive at The Bay Hotel. The sleek contemporary interiors come with ocean vistas; watch the surfers riding the waves into the bay and the sea lap the dramatic coastline as you spend some precious and unfeasibly blissful time with the girls.

The launch of the ‘Domestic Goddess’ package has opened up all manner of possibilities for a tailor-made and endlessly memorable hen do. The package can be tailored to the whims of the group: whether you envision something serene, involving spa sessions and champagne, or an active and adrenaline-charged affair, there’s an option to suit. Surf lessons, Zumba classes and jewellery workshops are amongst the activities on offer; chief features writer Hannah and I opted for the chocolate and cocktail making sessions, which neatly bookended a facial and delectable lunch served before ocean views.

The chocolate making involved a delicious session of melting chocolate, making truffles and piping melted chocolate decorations onto our creations under the supervision of a chef. The heady aroma of chocolate and boozy liquors filled the air as we chatted, laughed and lapped up the sweet treats. The cocktail session saw us mixing a range of luscious concoctions (with varying levels of ability), from Cosmopolitans and Key West Coolers to Chocolate Martinis and the hotel’s very own Fistral Sunrise, under the watchful eye of The Bay’s mixologist. Relaxed, fun and unfeasibly delicious, it’s the perfect way to stoke up that party vibe. The spa session was another sumptuous treat: my senses slipped into blissful submission during the aromatherapy facial at the state-of-the-art spa followed by a dip in the hot tub.

Whether it’s a fun-filled day out or an extended three-day break by the sea, the package offers something for everyone and can be tailored entirely to your vision. Clutching my chocolate handiwork, I left The Bay Hotel feeling uplifted, revitalised and more than a little bit spoilt.

Cost: from £170 per person including two night’s accommodation in a standard room, choice of two activities from the activity list and a three-course à la carte dinner on one night.

LITTLE WHITE ALICE

Nestled amongst the granite-topped hills and wild, heather-lined

pasture of Carmenellis, Little White Alice blends natural goodness and

sustainable living with a touch of luxury. The tranquil haven comprises

a cluster of contemporary cottages, a natural pool and 25 acres of

surrounding pasture, which is wandered by the resident wildlife.

Eco-conscious hens can escape here for a weekend of green activities. Arriving

to tea and homemade cakes, the delights include an evening tapas feast, a

guided nighttime walk around the site, cherished moments gathered around

a fire casting wishes up to the stars, sinking into the wood burning hot tub

and swimming in the pool. Then there’s the crafty stuff: bespoke workshops

in the on-site studio might range from felt making, silk painting or crafting

willow hearts to making a collaborative love shawl or best wishes journal –

incorporating collage, poetry and printing – for the bride or silk shawls for all

the hens to wear to the wedding.

A spa day at Budock Vean Hotel, a yoga session, exploring The Mineral

Tramways on bike or horseback or watersports at the nearby Stithians Lake

Watersports Centre might also feature amidst the schedule. Sleep in the

‘henstation’: two connected cottages offering a luxurious space for up to 12;

for smaller parties, there is a choice of cosy cottages. Pure escapism in a very

special place.

RECEPTION PERFECTION

So you’ve thrashed out the guest list. You’ve made those tricky decisions concerning

whether you should invite your mum’s cousin Margaret who you haven’t seen since the

‘80s or your colleague’s partner who your fiancé cannot bear. But, no sooner has the ink

dried on the final list and there’s another drama looming on the horizon. The table plan.

Before you even thrash out who should sit next to who – and debate whether great Auntie Maud

will find common ground with your potential loose canon of a uni pal – you’ll need to decide on the

layout of your reception space.

THE TABLE DEBATERound, rectangular, trestle? You might think a table’s a table, but the shape of the tables you choose

makes a huge impact where it comes to the issue of space, the sociability factor and enhancing your

wedding theme.

Round tables: “Round tables are easier for guests to mill around and encourage conversation,”

advises wedding planner Ali Berry (aliberryweddings.co.uk). “They also come with the benefit of

being able to comfortably share food and drinks without calling down the table.” Round tables do,

however, come with some implications where it comes to space and cost. “They take up a lot of

space, and can be expensive to dress as they require one centrepiece and décor such as candles per

table,” says Ali.

Rectangular/trestle tables: Rectangular tables and long rows of trestle tables are growing in popularity

with couples seeking a relaxed vibe or a nostalgic country fete feel. “Rectangular tables make the table

plan easier as groups can be merged along the table without separating people. You can also fit more

people in as rectangular tables take up less space,” says Ali. “Long rows of trestles have the feeling of a

big family dinner and seem more relaxed than a formal layout of round tables,” says Elle Winsor-Grime

of Inspire Hire (inspire-hire.co.uk). Then there’s the aesthetic factor. “The symmetry of flowers or

candle arrangements on a long table creates a fantastic visual effect,” says Ali.

Rectangular tables can, however, disturb the flow of guests: “They can make seating crowded and

restrict conversation as you can only talk to people on either side or in front of you,” says Ali.

In the mix: Many fashion-forward couples are now rejecting a uniform approach in favour of a more

eclectic reception. “Why not combine a combination of round, square and long trestle tables?” says

Elle. “I really like this from an aesthetic point of view, and it creates a modern, relaxed and informal

vibe.”

THE TOP TABLEThe traditional top table comprises a long table seating the starts of the show – i.e. the bride,

groom, both sets of parents, best man and chief bridesmaid – who sit on one side facing the guests.

However, current trends are seeing a move away from this approach. “It restricts conversation as

you can only talk to the person on either side of you,” says Ali. “Also, a lot of people feel ‘on show’,

especially when they are eating.” Many modern weddings now see the bride and groom seated on

a round table in the centre of the reception space with the bridal party, while the parents will often

sit with friends or family. Or you could even choose a private table for two and gaze lovingly into the

eyes of your new spouse throughout the meal. “Some couples opt to have a sweetheart table just

for them,” says Ali.

Ultimately, you should make a decision based on the option you deem most comfortable and

enjoyable for you and your guests. “The only key element to consider is that the top table must be

visible to all tables, especially during the speeches,” advises Ali.

TAKE A SEATAfter the guest list, many brides cite the table plan as the second most stressful – and potentially

contentious – job on the to-do list. It gets even trickier if you have the choppy waters of warring

relatives, bitter divorces or guests who don’t like each other to contend with.

Bear in mind a few key rules when you embark on the table plan. “Try and create balanced tables

with an even number of each gender, and guests either of a similar age or who are likely to have

common interests,” advises Ali. “If mixing up tables, ensure enough confident chatty people are

placed on each table and distributed around the table to encourage conversation.”

Keep your nearest and dearest – as well as any elderly guests – close to you. “The tables nearest to the

top table should be kept for your closest friends and family. Seat elderly guests closer to the top table,

65

feature | RECEPTION PERFECTION

especially if they are hard of hearing or shortsighted,”

recommends Ali.

What about the issue of couples and singles? “Most

couples are more comfortable when they’re together,”

says Ali. “And don’t create a table made up entirely of

singles. Avoid having a table of all those who didn’t fit

into the grouping of other tables as they end up feeling

like the ‘leftovers’ at your party.”

Inviting young children? Then ensure you seat them

with their parents. “Parents with very young children

should be seated towards the edge of the room to

minimise the potential for disruption and allow them to

make a quick exit,” advises Ali.

It might seem obvious but don’t put people who don’t

get on well together on the same table; there might be

a lot of love in the room but don’t use your wedding as

an opportunity to address tensions – particularly when

there’s alcohol involved.

Similarly, if you have divorced parents with a less

than amicable relationship, avoid seating them close

together. “Round tables make it difficult to separate

feuding relatives without it seeming obvious,” says

Ali. “If you’re having round tables, a fab way to deal

with divorced parents is to let each parent host their

own table. This way you are ensuring that everyone is

having a good time and not being forced to be nice for

the sake of your wedding.” Long tables make this issue

easier to handle. “You can separate guests without

them feeling singled out as you can space them along

the table,” suggests Ali.

Don’t stress out attempting to keep everyone happy.

“You should arrange your guests in a way that works

best for you and offers your guests the opportunity to

mingle,” says Ali. “You can only help encourage a good

atmosphere – the rest is up to your guests!

TABLE CENTREPIECESBefore you get carried away with visions of flamboyant

table centrepieces, there are a few practicalities to

consider. “Think about the height – can your guests see

each other over or around the table centrepiece?” says

Elle. “Consider the diameter – is there room on the

table for all the other items such as wine, butter, salt and

pepper? Then there’s the positioning – if you’re having

long trestle tables, try and position your table centrepieces

in between guests rather than directly in front.”

Flowers are obviously a classic, versatile and endlessly

beautiful choice for your table centrepieces. Whether

it’s wild flowers in mismatched glassware for a vintage

mood or elaborate blooms frosted with sparkle for a

glamorous aesthetic, you can tailor the style to your

wedding theme.

Don’t fancy flowers? There’s an endless array of

alternative options. Think storm lanterns filled with

sand, driftwood, shells and candles, paper flowers or

a stack of your favourite books. “Candelabras can be

used to create a timeless, elegant mood or a modern

sleek image. You can dress them with the likes of

strands of crystals and pearls, ivy and fruit,” says Elle.

“Fruit makes an exciting alternative to flowers – in

Italy table centrepieces are often made entirely from

lemons, limes and sprigs of bay. And how about vases

filled with fruit, feathers, butterflies, sweets or baubles

at Christmas?”

“Consider individual pot plants with assorted flowers

and herbs, which guests can take home at the end of

the night, doubling up as favours,” suggests Ali. “If you

have a sweet tooth, consider having a macaroon tower

or candy bar in the middle of each table.”

Or you might go for a highly personal option,

designing your centrepieces based on your hobbies

or experiences. “One couple have asked me to tailor

their table centrepieces to tell a story about themselves

and their life together,” says Elle. “One table will be

about their travels, with maps, travel books, vintage

tickets and postcards; one will reflect the bride’s love

of horses containing a horseshoe, vintage riding hat,

stirrup and rosettes; and so on.”

There are further ways to bring a splash of colour

to the table. “Think about different coloured table

runners, tablecloths and napkins, which can be

decorated with ribbons or fresh flowers,” suggests Elle.

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR TOP TABLES

Base your table names on things that mean something to you, for example, places you’ve visited together, your favourite musicians or songs, family surnames or names of loved ones who have passed on and were really special to you, like grandparents or pets.

If you love to read, place a stack of hardback books on the table to create a stand for your flowers.

Tuck handwritten notes into the napkins for your guests with a special memory that you have of them.

If you’re printing the menus, give the dishes names inspired by your relationship or experiences together.

Create a romantic centrepiece by arranging vintage photo frames with pictures of you both growing up or your journey as a couple, mixed with frames holding your favourite poems and set around candles.

Grow your own flowers or, if you’re creative, hand paint ceramic vases.

Be creative with your table plan. It might be a stepladder entwined with flowers, a suitcase strung with vintage tags or a window adorned with wild flowers. Guest tags are also growing in popularity.

FEELING FRUITY

Planning a natural, seasonal theme? Incorporate

this into your place setting s by placing a

seasonal item of fruit for each of your guests.

Pears, peaches and lemons work well – they

add a hit of colour and you can easily write a

name on them by using a metallic fine nibbed

pen. Eco, inexpensive and oh-so-pretty!

LOVE GROWS

In keeping with an eco theme, a packet of

seeds or a small potted plant make beautiful

place settings and double up as favours. Potted

herbs en masse add interest and texture to a

table display (you could even forego a floral

centrepiece) and their beautiful scent will fill

your reception room.

THE VINTAGE TOUCH

For those with a love of all things vintage,

mismatched china piled high at a place setting

makes an eclectic and informal statement.

Layer it up with the dinner plate, side plate and

teacup and saucer featuring an array of clashing

patterns and colourways. There are some great

local crockery hire companies you could use

or, if you have the time (and inclination), visit

charity shops or beg, borrow and steal from

your friends’ and family’s collections.

TASTY TREATS

Want to give your guests a sugar high ahead of

the evening entertainment? Why not appeal to

their sweet tooth and leave a tasty treat at their

place setting? Instead of the traditional sugared

almonds you could offer up a local delicacy –

say clotted cream fudge, handmade chocolate

or a stick of colourful rock. A popular choice in

America is a mini cupcake with the recipient’s

name beautifully scribed on a cupcake flag –

cute!

Get your guests in the mood to party and place a mini bottle of wine or

WORKING THE GROOM

GOING GREY

This year, truly distinguished gentlemen are smoking hot in shades of grey. From

brooding dark slate to pale dove grey – and every hue in between – it’s the latest

palette to feature in many a designer grooms’ collection. Cut in classic lines and with

the sharpest of tailoring, spruce it up with a little luxe sheen or opt for trendy texture

by way of wool, mohair or linen. Throw in a shock of colour – think bright shirts,

printed ties or jazzy patterned lining – for a quintessentially modern look.

TIE THE KNOT

It’s the hottest accessory to be rocking right now.

Yes, the debonair bowtie is back – and it’s had a

modern makeover. Complete a sophisticated black

tie look with a classic design in a sumptuous fabric,

opt for bright and playful prints to infuse your suit

with a quirky vibe or go for a rich texture, such as

wool, to enhance a rustic aesthetic.

BRIGHT AND BREEZY

From electric blues to show-stopping neon, colour is finding

fabulous form for grooms. Whether you opt for head-

to-toe or subtly splice some colour into your ensemble

through accents and accessories, every look from smooth

or preppy to retro ‘50s or rustic can rock the hottest hues.

Go for block-coloured suits in shades such as mint green,

feature | GROOMS GUIDE | Q&A

What would be a cool gift to get my best man?

Tankard, pint glasses, cufflinks...I would avoid like a

member from ‘The Only Way is Essex’ on a night out!

Look for something that will either be memorable

or of value to your best man and he will remember

forever – nobody is likely to wear ‘best man’ cufflinks

again after the wedding day!

Is there a sporting event or a band that he has always

wanted to see? If so, this could be a unique and

memorable gift and an experience you can enjoy

together. If he’s a sports fan, consider giving him

some signed sports memorabilia, which will be a great

keepsake and might turn out to be a good investment.

Just think of those George Best shirts that were

worth nothing until he died and suddenly you can’t

buy one for love or money.

How can I individualise my wedding day look?

There are plenty of options for those of you who are

keen to make a sartorial statement on your wedding

day, from brocaded suits cloths to a cream lightweight

Nehru collared linen. But for a style that any man

can make his own, I would suggest shunning the

traditional morning suit for a bit of black-tie magic. A

tux is a surefire ticket to a suave, on-trend look that

will guarantee offbeat wedding photos, particularly

if you twist the eveningwear conventions to your

own ends. Try mixing your satin or shawl collared

lapels with a slim bladed tie and coloured pocket

handkerchief for a dandyish twist that will look special

for the ceremony and smooth for the reception.

I’m getting married in Italy and want a cool look that is timeless but not boring. What do you suggest?

Ciao bella! I can’t think of a better place for a summer

European wedding. For me, there is one look that

just smacks of cool contemporary style for an Italian

wedding and that is white tailored trousers teamed

with a crisp white shirt and a navy blazer. For a bold

statement, go for a double-breasted blazer and some

tan driving shoes – this might just be the coolest outfit

you will ever wear in your life! If you can’t be cool and

stylish in Italy then when can you?

I want to buy my fiancée a gift to give her on the wedding day. What would you suggest?

This is a superb idea and something more grooms

should consider as a token of their affection and a

treasured memento of the wedding day. You can’t

go wrong with jewellery – after all, not many brides

will covet a Tottenham Hotspur season ticket!

Consider a heart charm chain or a seawater

cast piece of jewellery from Joseph Lamsin

(josephlamsin.com). You might opt for a

personalised piece for a romantic gesture and

truly unique gift – perhaps a cross with the date

of your wedding engraved on the reverse or even

a delicate engraved bracelet. Chambers and Beau

(chambersandbeau.com) offer some stylish bespoke

jewellery. And, for that little blue box no woman

can resist, take a look at tiffany.co.uk for ideas.

Nobody really listens during the readings, do they? Come on.

They’re like the opening slots at music festivals. A couple of die-

hard fans might pay attention, but everyone else is waiting for the

top three acts: The Vows, The Rings, The Kiss. They even sound like

bands. You’ve got more important stuff on than deciding what an

obscure aunt murmurs to the dozing congregation early doors. Let’s

just go ahead and stick a pin in the bookshelf. It’s what? ‘The House

at Pooh Corner’? Sounds great. Here’s 40p for photocopies.

The die-hard wedding fans won’t catch on. They’re wired to see sweetness

everywhere – and like all human beings, they have a tendency to assume

everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing. When Pooh and Piglet visit

one another at the same time? Must refer to your similar habits and mutual

affection. When Pooh sings the snow song? That’s the way you keep each

other cheerful in the face of adversity. And the Eeyore plot represents your

willingness to buy your ageing, arsey in-laws a new house.

All good. Or it would be if it was just you, your family and your friends in

the room. The people in charge can be a different matter. My cousin chose

the theme from ‘Time The Musical’, a largely forgotten West End show that

spliced ‘80s pop rock with gooey New Age mysticism. It featured lines like,

‘Reason is your greatest tool’ and ‘You are the creator of your own universe.’

Not strictly on-message, Bible-wise. I think the vicar’s words, delivered

witheringly from the pulpit before he read the Charge, were, “A humanist

text that was most inappropriate to a church ceremony.”

Awkward. There was bristling. Tutting. A baby began to cry, though I’m not

sure he’d really understood. At the reception the compliments on dresses

and flowers gave way to questions about the grouchy vicar and jokes about

Christian forgiveness, most of which involved the phrase “show him my

other cheeks.”

So yeah, the pin method does carry a slight risk of committing outrageous

blasphemy in a church. But look at it this way: the risk is self-limiting. If

you’re utterly orthodox or irredeemably pagan there’s nothing to worry

about, since your bookshelf will be a perfect fit for your wedding. The more

blasphemous books you own, the more likely it is you’ve ditched a church in

favour of dancing around a 6th century earthworks with antlers on your head.

It’s really only the dithering cherry-pickers in the middle that can slip up.

That’s me, of course. I suspect it’s you too. Get your ‘Pooh Corner’ and

meet me by the photocopier.

feature | THE SPEECH

Make delivering a heartfelt and engaging speech look easy. wed reveals some top tips for perfectly pitched speechmaking words Hannah May

No doubt you’ve heard the urban myths. Some have fractured

families, some have gone viral on YouTube, others have caused

immediate annulments and walkouts – but however the story

went, I’m certain that everyone has witnessed something of

their own spectacle.

There can be an incredibly fine line between brilliance and sheer

mortification and the results can range from utter disgust to

unbridled worship. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am, of course,

referring to the wedding speeches.

Whether they care to admit it or not, it’s a worry for everyone.

From the writing to the delivery and anticipated audience response,

the speech can present all manner of problems and repercussions –

whether it’s the dread of flat falling lines to the hazardous territory of

a joke too far.

THE SPEECH

Avoid the potential pitfalls and emerge master orator and cream of the toast by

heeding these hints.

TraditionRemember: There is certain etiquette regarding speeches that is always best

generally adhered to. Though we live in modern times and traditions are constantly

evolving, it’s important to keep in mind the purpose and audience at all times.

Do: Consider both the bride’s and groom’s families as well as other guests and, if it’s

a child-friendly event, scrap, minimise or cleverly disguise rude content via innuendo

or suggestion, which can be much funnier anyway.

Don’t: Be extreme. Everyone’s humour and sense of sentimentality is different, so

while it may appear dull to deliver from the sidelines, excessive emotion can prove

incredibly awkward for everyone. Hysterical crying/laughter is simply cringeworthy,

so rein it in.

Do: Tell funny tales to illuminate character and reveal secret snapshots of the bride

and groom’s relationship. Endearing anecdotes and humorous stories are a perfectly

acceptable reminder of how great and suitably matched they are.

Don’t: Delve into history too much. A wedding is about the future, not dragging

anyone’s name through the dirt and recalling past relationships, however amusing you

think it is. Be audience appropriate – does Granny really want to hear about the time

he…? Exactly.

TimeRemember: Short and sweet is one thing, but just uttering a meek “congratulations”

won’t quite cut it. Similarly, people don’t want to be forced into listening to you drone

on for half an hour. Discuss timing and the order of events with the bride and groom,

rehearse, and be aware of how fast you talk.

Do: Be prepared to omit or add material depending on how fast or slow the delivery

takes – and if the crowd is more/less than enthused. Sometimes you have to roll with

the punches.

Don’t: Get overexcited or carried away and start ad-libbing too much. Some

improvisation and spontaneity is good, but just because you suddenly like the sound

of your own voice doesn’t mean everyone else will.

Do: Have someone nearby that can signal or whisper that you’ve reached your time

limit. Consider giving the next speaker a line of transition or introduction before you

humbly sign off.

Don’t: Delay. Causing hold ups by hanging round the bar and chatting up the

bridesmaids when you should be speaking will disrupt the flow. Know exactly when

and before/after which person you’re speaking, and ensure all toilet breaks, eating/

drinking/flirting is taken care of prior to this moment.

TechnologyRemember: Individualisation is good, but keep it low key. A 3D surround sound

spectacular may sound impressive, but it’s ultimately showy and has a massive

potential for pitfalls. Be techno savvy and by all means enlist some modern media,

but truly ask yourself – and others – whether it enhances or overshadows the

experience.

Do: Use pictures. As well as saving you words, they add nicely to the atmosphere

and ease pressure by taking all eyes off you for at least a little while. Whether picture

presentations projected onto a screen, printed handouts to pass around or photos

plastered throughout the venue, they are a wise and memorable move.

Don’t: Be too distasteful. Again, this is subjective, so get a variety of honest opinions

from various people before publishing semi-nude or uncompromising pictures of

anyone involved in the wedding. If you get it wrong, you’ll never be forgiven.Kirstin Prisk

77

Page 76: Cornwall Wed Magazine Issue 22

feature | THE SPEECH

Do: Experiment. Film, video messages and

musical montages can all work wonders and

infuse great comic relief and emotion into

a speech.

Don’t: Overdo it. While the odd snapshot

or mini-movie is entertaining, you are

meant to be talking, not merely pressing

play. Sensory overload will leave your

audience saturated, not spellbound.

Do: Discuss all technological additions with

the couple and venue. Some places won’t

be able to support a network of power

cables and some couples may not be overly

keen having to change their seating plan to

accommodate a giant cinematic screen for a

ten second clip.

TrendsRemember: A little timelessness is

required. What’s hot now can appear odd

or cheesy in years to come, so tasteful

consideration is required. Thinking outside

the box is good; people usually like

‘different’ but off-the-wall isn’t mainstream

– and remember that’s what you’re aiming

for. Your role is predominantly to please the

couple, their families and all the guests, so

you can’t afford to be too whimsical or self-

indulgent.

Do: Take another approach. Weave your

way amongst the crowd rather than

remaining stationary, use props or play

dress up as part of a joke/story. Go a bit

wild – but know your boundaries.

Don’t: Go off track. Personalisation

may be en vogue, but nobody wants an

autobiography of your life or a protracted

testimony detailing exactly what the bride/

groom means to you beyond adored best

friend/brother/son/daughter etc. Digress

and divulge too much at your peril.

Do: Tease a little. So long as it’s fun,

innocuous and expresses genuine affection

for the person or people involved, amuse

the crowds with humorous highlights from

the bride/groom’s lives.

Don’t: Drink too much alcohol.

Drunkenness = disaster.

Don’t: Insult people. Though current

trends seem intent on varying degrees of

naming-and-shaming, it really isn’t that

cool. Remember the core component

here is respect. Your job is to reflect and

congratulate, not reveal skeletons from past

lives for public branding and humiliation

– memorable, yes, but only in tragic myth-

making territory…

feature | FOOD | CATCH OF THE DAY

Cornwall is almost as famed for its fish-rich

cuisine as it is for its hearty pastry fare. Our

spectacular coastline is peppered with fishing

villages where fishermen have landed their catch

on historic harbours for centuries, filling the

bellies and shaping the culture of the county in

the process. Mackerel, haddock, pollock, plaice,

squid – the ocean bears a wealth of fare that is

as versatile as it is delicious.

Hence, it’s not difficult to see why fish is a popular

option for a wedding menu. A definite crowd-pleaser,

fish dishes bring a tasty local flavour to your feast,

dispelling any issues of food miles while infusing your

menu with a definite sense of place – particularly

fitting for a coastal or sea-themed wedding.

You might wish to keep it simple. Think classic fish

cakes or cod in a golden batter served with chunky

chips – perfect for a quintessentially and deliciously

retro British flavour. Or you might want to surprise

your guests with an inventive take on the fish theme,

be it served in a sumptuous sauce, glazed with a

sweet, spicy or even boozy twist, or spiced with the

exotic flavour of Thai, Indian or Spanish cuisine.

Demonstrating the diversity of the fish dish, The

Round Kitchen has devised a series of menu ideas,

which illustrate how a canapé, starter and main

course can be created from a single type of fish and

ingredients. Let these inventive ideas whet your

appetite for a wedding menu that celebrates the

bounty of the Cornish shoreline.

TIPPLE TIPSNice ice baby! Add a colourful flourish to your drinks

by preparing ice cubes with colourful berries or

edible flowers.

Celebrate the season. Think elderflower champagne for

spring, fruity mojitos for summer, warm apple cider for

autumn and mulled wine and White Russians for winter.

Nice and non-alcoholic. Serve up appetising drinks for

non-drinkers such as peach iced tea, local apple juice,

elderflower fizz, hibiscus-infused lemonade, ginger beer

and flavoured coffees.

Label love. Customise your wine bottles with personalised

labels; it might be a fun photo, an illustration, a motif that

carries through the details of the day or whatever tickles

your fancy!

RETRO

RETRO ROCKS Go retro to create a fun and funky vibe that’s sure to provoke a

rush of memories and chatter amongst your guests. Paint your party

with a palette of ‘70s and ‘80s shades inspired by the colours of the

Rubik’s cubes, which double as favours and name cardholders. The

brightly coloured vases echo the shape and colours, while the Rubik’s

cube salt and pepper shakers add a novel twist to the tabletops.

Old records make for ingenious tablemats while providing a further talking

point for your guests who will delight in a games corner stocked with Twister

and Hungry Hippos, and might even challenge each other to a space hopper

race!

A combination of paper lanterns and pom-poms suspended above the table

adds a vibrant shot of colour. Displayed on a cake stand made from old

records, the colourful cupcakes ooze bright and cheery appeal, while the

cake pops will bring back happy memories of the iconic Pac-Man game.

HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE LOVED BY YOUSweet tooth? Then treat yourselves – and your guests – to a sugary

and deliciously indulgent wedding theme. Think giant vases brimming

with sweets, balls of flowers reminiscent of candyfloss and a sweetie

buffet topped with an array of lip-smacking lovelies that look as

good as they taste. Be inspired by the favourites of your childhood;

we’ve used a selection of retro delights such as flying saucers,

marshmallows and white mice to adorn the tables as well as the

sweetie buffet.

Remember the sweetie bags you’d clutch when you bought penny chews

from the corner shop? We’ve filled them with sweets to make covetable

favours, while grown-up milkshakes can be served in little bottles with stripy

paper straws to echo those school time treats. Another childhood favourite –

the fondant fancy – has been used to create quirky place names, making for a

nice little treat awaiting the guests as they sit down.

And the pièce de résistance is the sweet showstopper of a cake. The children

won’t be the only ones drooling in wonder – but the adults too!

Picture this: rolling hills tumbling into densely wooded valleys, historic

buildings hugged by secluded gardens, sweetly scented orchards where

petals coat the branches like candy floss. Idyllic, isn’t it? Cornwall’s coastline

might be spectacular – but venture away from the shore, head inland, and

you’ll stumble upon some equally enchanting places. And these secret spots

make a wonderful backdrop for a personal and ever so pretty wedding.

From an elegant Georgian house flanked by lush valleys to a boutique hotel nestled

in five acres of gardens and majestic woodland, we’ve taken a peek inside some

heavenly hideaways tucked away in some of Cornwall’s most romantic settings.

For a secret garden soirée…

LANTALLACKIn a quiet corner of south east Cornwall – just a short distance from the

sloping banks of the Tamar and hidden along a winding country lane edged

with foxgloves and bluebells in the warmer months – you’ll find Lantallack: a

Grade II listed Georgian farm which makes a truly enchanting backdrop for a

tailor-made wedding.

The grounds comprise a glorious medley of rolling lawns, apple orchards and secluded

gardens speckled with mature beech trees and flowerbeds spilling with blooms in

spring and summer. A Mediterranean style courtyard frames an outdoor heated

pool overlooking a wisteria walk, a pond and the gardens beyond. Then there’s the

breathtaking view across lush meadows, pockets of woodland and mile upon mile

of idyllic pasture – the name ‘Lantallack’, meaning ‘hills and valleys’ in Cornish, pays

homage to this dreamy landscape.

There’s a cluster of charming buildings at the heart of Lantallack. The Georgian

farmhouse and Pippin Cottage – once the farm’s old coach house – offers beautiful

accommodation for close family and friends. Converted from a 300-year-old apple-

crushing barn, Polly’s Bower is a stylish and contemporary open-plan sanctuary for

two, which makes a dreamy setting for the bridal preparations and the wedding night.

The 17th century cart barn is a wonderful rustic space for ceremonies. Just imagine

taking your vows with your guests seated on hay bales and flowers woven around the

beams, before spilling onto the pool terrace for celebratory drinks. You may also take

your vows under the canopy of the wisteria walk or in the conservatory off the walled

garden.

The Lawn Terrace makes a prime setting for a marquee, ushering in picture-perfect

views across the gardens and valleys; for a beautifully bohemian feel, you might party

the night away in a tipi in the Hay Meadow.

A veritable blank canvas with a highly flexible ethos, you might stamp your personality

onto your party in any way that you envision. It might be throwing a big country bash

with a hog roast and barn dancing, tucking into a picnic in the gardens or a festival-style

celebration in the meadow. Just imagine celebrating under those big open skies and

toasting your union as you watch the sun slip behind the valley. Bliss.

For an elegant wedding…

THE VEANTake a winding lane deep into the Cornish countryside and, as

you near the sublime beauty of the south coast, you’ll come

upon The Vean, a sanctuary from the hubbub of the modern

world. Nestled in the Porthluney Valley, the frontage of the

elegant Georgian country house overlooks a tranquil stretch of

woodland; sheep graze the surrounding landscape, while the

odd peacock struts across the gardens.

Set in the heart of the Caerhays Estate, a choice of fairytale vistas lie

on the doorstep, from the sheer drama of Caerhays Castle and its

magnificent gardens of camellias and rare rhododendrons to the sands

of Porthluney and Portholland beaches, which are less than a mile from

the house.

A wedding at The Vean is bespoke, private and luxurious. Civil

ceremonies take place in the dining room with its mellow palette of

pale gold and soft green, Georgian furnishings and exquisite crystal

chandelier. Church ceremonies may take place in the picturesque

church of St. Michael Caerhays, which is situated nearby.

The dining room makes an ambient backdrop for the wedding breakfast

for intimate weddings of up to 25 guests. For parties of up to 80 guests,

the terrace may be covered by a marquee to create an extra room

for the reception or, for celebrations with up to 120 guests, a larger

marquee may be sited on the lawn; both options offer perfect vantage

points to enjoy a meal served with glorious views across the valley

and castle gardens. If you’re planning a wedding for over 120 guests, a

marquee reception may take place in the castle grounds.

Rich in late Georgian style and individual character, the eight bedrooms

allow up to 16 people to stay in the house and enjoy the extended

festivities. The Master Bedroom is a chic bolt-hole for the newly-weds;

flooded with natural light, idyllic views across the valley come with

antique furnishings and a snug bed piled high with crisp linen.

The estate boasts a choice of further accommodation, from the Old

Village Hall, a stylish retreat situated in the castle gardens, to the Fish

Sheds, which open onto the sands of Portholland – allowing an endlessly

personal wedding to finish in luxurious and truly distinctive style.

For a picture-perfect party…

BOSCUNDLE MANORArriving at Boscundle Manor is like stumbling upon a well-kept secret. Hidden in a tranquil

location, where pretty sloping gardens meet ancient woodland, the warm charm of the 17th

century manor house is palpable from the moment your eyes fall on the frontage, its rosy pink

walls draped in lilac blossom and hugged by neat lawns and colourful flowerbeds.

The rich character continues inside – in the snug lounge with its deep velvety sofas and open fireplace, in the

dining room with its wooden floors, sumptuous drapes and heady touch of grandeur, and in the light and airy

climes of the conservatory. The interiors combine style, elegance and a charm befitting the building’s historic

character with a wonderfully welcoming and endlessly cosy ambience.

The individually designed bedrooms are contemporary in style; from bold jet black, hot pink and modish

flourishes to pretty pastels and chaise lounges, there’s a room for all tastes complete with luxe bathrooms

and impeccable attention to detail. All relaxation needs are catered for: take a dip in the indoor or outdoor

pool, indulge in a treatment in the Zento room and sink into the hot tub and gaze up at star-speckled

skies. It’s small wonder this chic sanctuary is deemed to be one of the region’s most romantic hotels.

The romance factor might be a given – but a wedding at Boscundle Manor also offers exclusivity, flexibility

and a beautifully personal event. With accommodation for up to 40 guests, you can revel in the blissful

climes for an extended celebration. Arrive to a relaxed welcome feast, enjoy the festivities in privacy and

then wile away a laidback day reminiscing over events the following day, maybe tucking into brunch on the

lawn followed by a long soak in the hot tub.

Ceremonies may take place in the lounge, the conservatory, which is ideal for small parties of up to 20

guests, or the restaurant, which is particularly magical for a candlelit winter wedding with its low beams,

log fire and intimate ambience. Alternatively, you may wish to go al fresco and take your vows beneath

the thatched gazebo on the croquet lawn – a spectacular spot with the lofty woodland framing the oh-so

pretty picture.

The dining room is the backdrop for intimate receptions and, for larger parties, a marquee can be attached

to the house to provide a tailor-made celebration space in close proximity to the cosy lounge and facilities

of the hotel.

With a highly creative approach to cuisine and an emphasis on top quality seasonal ingredients, your

delectable bespoke menu might range from a formal dinner, buffet or barbecue to exotic feasts of sushi,

tapas or oriental fare.

After the celebrations, savour your stay in the secluded honeymoon retreat, which has a two-person spa

bath, luxurious bed and French doors overlooking the gardens – and bask in the romance of this wonderful

little secret.

feature | VENUES | SCORRIER HOUSE

For a stately celebration…

SCORRIER HOUSEFor anyone who swoons at the romance of the Austen era – at love

played out against the setting of a grand country retreat, at horses

grazing in the grounds and the lofty ceilings, historic portraits and

graceful architecture of a bygone era – there can be few more

elegant venues to wed than Scorrier House.

Set amidst 450 acres of woods and parkland, Scorrier House marries

splendour with a relaxed ambience. The house benefits from the personal

character of being the family home of the Williams family whose ancestors

built the property back in 1778. The approach to weddings is one of

exclusivity and flexibility: couples may revel in the beauty of the setting with

absolute privacy, with the freedom to put their personal stamp on the day.

The most striking feature of the house is undoubtedly the staircase in the hall

– a graceful backdrop for the photographs and a fantastic centrepiece for the

wedding celebrations when entwined with flowers and foliage. The ceremony

may either take place here or, for smaller weddings, in the adjoining drawing

room before a window boasting magnificent views of the grounds.

Up to 160 guests can be accommodated inside the house, with 110 guests

seated in one room for the meal. A marquee can be used for additional

numbers.

Guests are free to roam around the grounds and enjoy drinks around the

pool if it is sunny. In the evening, the drawing room offers an ambient setting

for dancing and, as dusk falls, the sense of romance is heightened as the house

and flower-woven arches of the conservatory are lit up.

Located next to the main house, the Butlers Cottage and Stable House have

been converted to offer contemporary and comfortable accommodation,

allowing you to extend this exquisite experience and lap up the beauty of this

timeless setting with your nearest and dearest.

feature | RELATIONSHIPS | THE BIG ISSUES

What are your real wedding woes? And I’m not

talking about the tablecloths. The lead-up to a

wedding can present individuals and couples with

all manner of annoyances, concerns and deep-

rooted fears that can spur anything from a minor

hissy-fit to total trepidation.

Part one of our relationship special delves deep into the

common issues affecting couples from wedding jitters to

money matters. With the help of some expert advice,

you can cast your fears into the fire and emerge a super

sage and savvy spouse…

“I’m suffering with a case of the jitters and am worrying if I am doing the right thing – or even marrying the right person.”

He says: “It’s natural to be nervous, it’s a big

commitment! Just roll with it – the positives outweigh

the negatives and that’s why you’re here. You can

always find the negative in everything if you look for it,

but just trust your instinct that led you to propose in the

first place.”

She says: “First of all – don’t panic. It is completely

normal to feel like this and every couple experiences

it at some point during their wedding plans and like

us – on our actual wedding day! If you are feeling more

dread than excitement then you need to ask yourself

if it is nerves about the guests and speaking in front of

them or is it the possibility of spending life with this

person? I felt the ‘jitters’ whilst my sister was lacing

up my wedding dress but I looked at a photo of my

hubby to be and realised how lucky I was to get this

opportunity to spend the rest of my life with him. Be

open and honest with your partner about your feelings

as they will no doubt be feeling the same and you can

comfort each other.”

The expert says: “Take a deep breath. Make a balance

sheet of pluses and minuses of your fiancé and seriously

look at the fact that you are going to spend the rest of

your days together. Ask yourself: are you compatible?

Remember, this is a natural feeling at this stage, and

accept that you will have jitters as you’re making a

lifelong commitment. If you haven’t lived together

before, you’ll be sharing all aspects of your life together

from here on in. If you have, making the commitment

to marry won’t change your everyday relationship.”

feature | RELATIONSHIPS | THE BIG ISSUES

“I’m struggling with my guest list and have found myself getting people’s backs up over not inviting them. They are old mates I don’t really speak to anymore.” He says: “There’s always more people you could invite

to your wedding. The important thing is that, on the

day, when you look back at the congregation you want

to see all those people that really mean something to

you. They should be the people you want there most of

all – not people you feel you ought to invite because of

some past association or family pressure.”

She says: “We had a lot of problems with this

conundrum especially with our university friends.

Our venue could only hold 48 people and we couldn’t

forfeit our family for our friends. If your friends are

decent ones they will understand the pressure you

are under and make your decision easy for you. They

should gracefully accept an evening invitation and be

happy for you. As an extra sweetener for those guests

you can’t invite, think about holding a party after the

wedding where you can show your wedding video and

reminisce. If they give you grief then they aren’t worth

inviting at all – you don’t want anything to distract you

on your wedding day.”

The expert says: “True friends would respect your

wishes and support your plans, so the very fact that

you’re feeling hassled by them speaks volumes. We

wanted a small wedding and set a six month rule – if we

didn’t speak to/see them at least every six months, they

weren’t invited.” Sarah Christopher from Boho Bride

www.bohobride.co.uk

“I’ve suddenly realised that my wife will be the only woman that I will be intimate with for the rest of my life, which is a bit of a scary thought.”

He says: “You have to remember that you love this

woman so any worries like this are just nerves. If you

really had the option to be with someone else you

probably wouldn’t take it – and that’s why you made

the decision to commit. Don’t beat yourself up. You’re

always going to be attracted to other people, but she is

the one you love - you have to remember that and not

get freaked out.”

She says: “I think everyone has moments like this but

think how well you know each other and each others’

bodies – surely this can only get better and go to a

deeper level once you are married: you would never be

able to achieve that with someone else. You just need

to keep making the effort and taking time to appreciate

her body and grow together.”

The expert says: “It’s just the same for men and

women and involves several thoughts a) what if the lust

wanes? and b) what if I don’t feel they are / I am attractive

anymore? Sexual attraction does wax and wane over

time but doesn’t mean that sex is not enjoyable anymore.

It just changes and becomes more about love and

commitment.” Crystal Pearce, Relate www.relate.org.uk

feature | RELATIONSHIPS | THE BIG ISSUES

“We budgeted really tightly but we’ve somehow run out of money and still have lots of things to organise – what do we do?”

He says: “Try to look at things that you don’t need which you can cut back

on. Prioritise the things that matter most, for example – the most important

thing for me was our rings because we wear them forever as a symbol of

our vows. Always remember it is one day and it is not worth getting into

debt for or starting married life in financial trouble, as that is not a good start

to your future.”

She says: “No matter how many lists you write out and how many things

you think of, you will never cover everything or budget for it. We had

a contingency float for our wedding and that soon got gobbled up with

something or other. We utilised our friends’ and families’ talents to help us

afford the wedding we wanted. Our family friend ripped up his garden to put

together all our wedding flowers, my sister is very arty and did our amazing

invitations, my mum’s friend kindly made our wedding cake. Ask around and

snoop into your friends’ hobbies – It’s amazing how useful they can be!”

The expert says: “I always suggest that couples start the process by

deciding on the three most important things to them. Allocate budget to

these things first. Everything else is just an extra, work out if you really

need it and if you do – compromises and alternatives can always be found if

you try hard enough! There are lots of ways to save money, remember the

important bit is that you are getting married, and why.” Elle Winsor-Grime

from Inspire Hire

www.inspire-hire.co.uk

“The wedding planning started well but now our families are feuding over minor things. It’s become so bad that I just feel like calling the whole thing off.”

He says: “Families, eh? Who’d have them – well, we all would, as without

them there would not be a lively wedding. Families are great until they have

clashing ideas and both think that they are right. I took control

of the wedding and brought in specific family members

for certain tasks. By delegating I managed to include

everyone and avoid any awkwardness between the

families. If you do find yourself in this situation, be

open and honest with them about the fact that

it is your day and they are beginning to ruin the

experience for you. Make sure you thank them for

their advice and help though – you don’t want to

come across as rude.”

She says: “Things will get heated at some point. Just

talk to them calmly and remind them that it is a happy

occasion and you want everybody to enjoy it and be

a part of it. It will all come together on the day.”

The expert says: “The time has come for

each of you to have a few firm words with

your families. Point out to them that this

is your big day, you want them to be

involved, and if they wish to be they

need to respect your wishes. I also

find that it helps to delegate certain

areas or jobs to individuals so that

they feel involved and have some

responsibility. It is also often better

not to discuss too much of the finer

detail with your family and friends;

everyone always has an opinion but,

at the end of the day, it’s yours that

counts.” Elle Winsor-Grime from

Vicki and PietroThe story of Vicki and Pietro’s union began with an Easter egg. Having met through a

mutual friend at work, they were discussing their Easter weekend plans back in 2009

when Vicki remarked that she didn’t have any Easter eggs. “I didn’t think anything more

of this and when I came back from lunch, Pietro had left an Easter egg on my desk with a

note saying that I couldn’t have an Easter without an egg! We got talking properly and it

blossomed from there. A year later, we were engaged!”

As the backdrop to many romantic breaks and happy memories for the couple, The Scarlet Hotel

was an obvious choice of venue. The location and laidback vibe proved a key inspiration for

their ‘Perfect Harmony’ theme, designed by Michelle Kelly from Pocketful of Dreams. “We used

contrasting but complementary elements focused around fire, water, earth, metal and wood to

create an organic and relaxed look which fitted perfectly with the beautiful coastal setting,” Vicki

says.

The theme was echoed in details such as votives with tea lights, mercury glass vases, order of

services presented like messages in a bottle, wooden treasure chests to present the confetti bags and

feathers to create an aisle during the ceremony, while hessian, twine and driftwood lent an organic

feel.

“We used peacock feathers as a visual motif and from this we took our colour palette: aubergine

purple, bright teal, leaf green, antique gold, pewter and driftwood,” Vicki says. The floral

arrangements – gorgeous fusions of silver and green with pretty pops of purple and foliage – perfectly

echoed the natural aesthetic. A pre-wedding planting party on the Friday saw the girls gather to

create terraniums – featuring shells, moss and kitsch figurines – which adorned the ceremony room.

Vicki wore an exquisite Jenny Packham gown for the intimate ceremony where they took their vows

before 18 guests. The bespoke wedding breakfast included the delectable likes of scallops and goat’s

cheese fritters with St Enodoc asparagus, red mullet with crab ravioli and chocolate and cardamom

tart.

The couple opted for less conventional evening entertainment, setting up a photo booth with seaside

themed props and various board games. “We created an iPod play list for some background music

and had a fantastically relaxed evening full of conversation, champagne and lots of laughter!” Vicki

recalls.

Looking back, Vicki recounts her favourite moment: “Walking down the aisle with my Dad, feeling

the love hit me as I walked into the ceremony room and watching Pietro’s eyes light up as he saw

me.”

Her final thoughts resonate the personal factor of weddings: “Have a day that reflects you and do

what you want. Make it the day you want to remember, not the day you think everyone else wants

it to be. You will be surprised at how readily people accept, embrace and appreciate you doing

something different.”

Rachel and LeeLee’s proposal to Rachel couldn’t have been more romantic.

He put a message in a bottle and took her to Gwithian Beach;

there, he threw the bottle in the sea and it washed up at

Rachel’s feet. She was in for another romantic surprise on her

wedding day in the form of a grey vintage Jaguar that Lee had

secretly arranged to transport her to the church.

The couple’s wedding was painted with a glorious palette of colours,

from the chic royal blue of the bridesmaid dresses to the vibrant floral

arrangements, which combined bright pink, electric blue, zesty lime

and hot orange. Rachel even accessorised her gorgeous Eternity Bride

gown – a prize won in County Cream’s special draw at the 2011 Wed

Show - with colourful flowers in her hair.

The wedding ceremony at St. John’s Church in Truro began with a

slight drama. “Before we’d even said our vows in the church, one

of the bridesmaids fainted!” says Rachel. “We were unaware of her

swaying whilst we were at the altar; she was then brought to the front

to sit down and spent the rest of the service lying down on a pew.”

An emotional and personal ceremony ensued and the newly-weds

emerged from the church to a shower of confetti.

Guests proceeded to the elegant setting of Gyllyngdune Gardens

in Falmouth where they feasted on a carved buffet, which included

decorated ham, salmon and turkey breast, prawns and salads,

followed by mixed berry meringue nests with fruit coulis. Jon Martin

Magic circulated the celebration space performing magic tricks

while each table waited to be called for food. In the evening, PJ the

DJ ensured guests were pulling shapes on the dance floor until late

with his eclectic and crowd-pleasing play list, while pasties and the

sumptuous wedding cake by Truly Scrumptious Cakes tickled their

guests’ taste buds.

“Everything was just perfect,” comments Lee, reflecting on their day.

“I’d say the moment I saw Rachel walking down the aisle, in her dress,

was the moment that really got to me and brought a tear to my eye.”

“Plan everything gradually, this is what we did and our wedding day

went very smoothly,” the newly-weds advise, looking back on their

memorable wedding. “Make an itinerary of the day and give it to the

best man, bridesmaids and ushers. Then just relax, enjoy and take in

every second as it goes so quickly.”

regular | GOT WED | AMIE AND JAMES

Amie and JamesIt all started with a cheeky chat-up line during a lunch

service at Trevaskis Farm, near Hayle, where Amie works

as a waitress and James is the head chef. “From then on

we were inseparable,” says Amie. James got down on

one knee and asked Amie to be his wife in 2011. “She’d

already given me a beautiful little boy and I wanted our

family to be complete”, he reveals.

Amie fell for a glamorous Amanda Wyatt dress embellished

with ruffles and sparkle, which she accessorised with her dream

bouquet of purple orchids. The flowers beautifully reflected the

vibrant peacock colour scheme of rich purples and teals with a

smattering of peacock feathers and sparkly butterflies.

After the ceremony at Crowan Church, Amie and James

supped champagne in an open-top Rolls Royce en route to the

reception at St Michael’s Hotel in Falmouth. Following a fruit

punch drinks reception on the lawn, guests tucked into potato

and leek soup, roast chicken and meringue with summer

berries and lemon cream. “It was just beautiful. Nothing was

too much trouble for any of the staff and the venue looked

amazing,” Amie reflects.

Paul Simmons supplied much of the soundtrack to the day,

playing keyboard and singing Etta James’s ‘At Last’ during

Amie’s entrance at the church and ‘Your Love Is Lifting Me

Higher’ on the newly-weds’ exit; he also performed many

family favourites during the drinks reception and wedding

breakfast. In the evening, DJ Tony Douglas took the helm with

his varied play list of crowd-pleasing tracks. “Our first dance

was Jason Mraz’s ‘I Won’t Give Up’. When we stopped to listen

to the words it just fitted us perfectly!” Amie comments.

Full of happy memories, Amie reflects on her highlight of the

day: “When we said ‘I do’. Nothing can beat the feeling of such

happiness.”

She warns other brides not to brood on things beyond their

control. “Don’t worry too much – you’ll never enjoy the day to

its full. Also, put the weather to the back of your mind as you

can’t change it!” And James’s advice to other grooms? “Enjoy

your moment of saying ‘I do’. Nothing makes you prouder than

to become husband to the woman who is your everything.”

Morwenna and JoeyMorwenna and Joey first met through mutual friends almost a decade ago,

but it was some years later that Joey finally got around to asking her out.

After nearly two years together, Morwenna was astonished when Joey

proposed on her birthday. “Whilst walking our dogs on a beautiful part

of Nare Head, cuddled up together in the rain Joey pulled out the most

amazing diamond ring. Amongst the tears I said yes and suddenly the sun

came out and we sat there for nearly an hour looking out over the sea,” she

recalls.

The couple decided on a small ceremony in the elegant Georgian climes of The

Vean followed by a relaxed marquee reception at Morwenna’s parents’ house. “I

wanted the day to be colourful and pretty with individual and vintage details,” she

says. They decorated the marquee with hedgerow flowers, bunting, lace, teacup

candles, straw bales and a clipboard of pictures of the couple growing up.

Morwenna’s beautiful lace gown by Claire Pettibone perfectly reflected the mood

and the couple became husband and wife in a wonderfully intimate ceremony. “We

had only 60 guests in the cosy dining room and, as we took our vows surrounded

by our family and friends, it felt perfect,” she says.

The newly-weds’ entrance into the marquee proved a further highlight. “We

walked in to our guests applauding and the Formula One theme tune, ‘The Chain’,

which was quite apt as Joey has spent most of his life racing cars,” she recalls.

Served on vintage china from Too Pretty By Far, guests were treated to a

sumptuous buffet from Beetham Food, which featured a seafood platter, beef

sirloin and red onion jam and goat’s cheese tart, vanilla and lemon roulade and

velvet chocolate torte. A personal play list entertained revellers throughout the

course of the evening, while cupcakes and pasties kept appetites deliciously at bay.

Animals featured throughout the country occasion. The couple’s two dogs Archie

and Rocco attended the whole day and their pet sheep was memorably vocal

during the speeches when Morwenna’s dad took to the microphone!

“Quite a few guests braved the torrential rain and camped in the field overnight

where we all had bacon sandwiches the following morning and reminisced over the

day,” says Morwenna.

Morwenna imparts some words of wisdom for couples planning an individual event:

“Be original. It’s your chance to show your personality and let it shine! Stick to your

decisions and the things you like and try using local businesses and friends’ and

family’s talents. It makes it all more special and gets everybody involved.”

Jane and StuartIt was a case of love at first wink for Jane and Stuart. When

Jane ‘winked’ at Stuart on a dating website he replied

straight away. “Emails turned to phone calls and a month

later Stuart came over to Ireland. Finally, after 15 months

of trips back and forth to see each other, I moved over to

Cornwall,” reveals Jane. Stuart’s proposal came just after

midnight on Christmas Day 2010. “We had been wrapping

presents and getting the turkey ready when he called me

into the living room. When I walked in, he dropped down

on one knee and asked me to marry him,” says Jane.

Their elegant wedding was peppered with Celtic details. Stuart’s

Scottish roots were reflected in the ‘Flower of Scotland’ kilts worn

by the groomsmen, while the bridesmaids wore complementing

pale sage green dresses. Jane donned a dazzling Ellis Bridals gown,

teamed with vintage inspired florals. “We chose vintage style

flower arrangements in colours of ivory, green and pale pink,” says

Jane. “My bouquet consisted of akito and cool water roses, white

bouvardia and white hydrangea with eucalyptus foliage.”

The ceremony took place at St. Petroc’s Church in Bodmin. “After

arriving at the church a little later than planned, I was glad to be

reunited with Stuart again and we enjoyed the most amazing

ceremony,” says Jane. The wedding party then jumped into

Strawberry Leisure’s VW campervans, stopping for a champagne

break at Porth Beach en route to their reception at the Headland

Hotel.

A Pimm’s reception welcomed guests before the wedding

breakfast, which featured such scrummy highlights as

homemade terrine of pork, roast topside of Cornish beef

and vanilla seed crème brûlée. “Stuart and Lee, the best man,

were both feeling nervous about making their speeches. Stuart

was particularly nervous as he had left his speech at home!

Nevertheless, I think the speeches from both them and my dad

were one of the highlights of the day,” Jane comments. Later in

the evening, a hog roast was served while guests danced the night

away courtesy of Robbie’s Roadshow Disco.

“The whole day was amazing!” says Jane. She has one definite

piece of advice for other couples: “Get married as early in the day

as possible because the whole day flies by so quickly that you’ll

want to have the maximum time to enjoy it!”

Natasha and TomAlthough Natasha and Tom met on their first day at boarding school at the age of

13, they didn’t get to know each other until years later when a chance encounter

while skiing in France led to a blossoming romance. “Tom is a Royal Navy helicopter

pilot and I was still at medical school, so we spent much of our relationship

commuting across the country and world until settling in Cornwall where I work as a

doctor at Treliske and Tom as an instructor at RNAS Culdrose,” Natasha explains.

More than seven years after that fateful encounter in France, Tom popped the question

during an early morning walk through an olive grove in the mountains in Mallorca. Quickly

abandoning her vision for a simple and low-key wedding without a flowing gown or

bridesmaids, the couple settled on a classic affair in the beautiful setting of Scorrier House

with Natasha donning a gorgeous Faragé gown and Tom his naval uniform.

“I was insistent on using details such as garden-grown flowers, embroidered vintage

tablecloths collected from charity shops and the sloe vodka we’d made over the autumn,”

Natasha says. Family members gathered to create jam-jar floral arrangements, while the

hessian table runners crafted by Natasha’s mum and the sloe vodka favours and wedding cake

made by Natasha and Tom enhanced the homespun dimension of the day. “Seeing it come

together on the day with the flowers provided by George Mackay (who decorated the stairs)

was the first moment of many I cried on the day – it looked so beautiful,” she says.

While Natasha looked resplendent in her gown, her bridesmaids wore dresses to complement

their individual styles, tying the looks together with matching silk shawls and hummingbird

necklaces.

The highly personal ceremony, which was conducted by Tom’s registrar mum, Colleen,

was peppered with light-hearted moments: Natasha walked down the stairs to Etta James’s

‘At Last’ and Tom spontaneously carried her up the stairs to rapturous applause after the

ceremony.

Caterer Fee Turner served up a delicious feast of Cornish produce, from Porthilly Estuary

oysters, smoked St Ives sea trout and Cornish lamb to strawberries and Rodda’s clotted

cream. Continuing the theme, they chose amusing local place names such as Goongumpas and

Ventongimps as their table names.

“The amazing Roger Styles, an acoustic guitarist with a difference, took a break from his

packed schedule to play at our wedding and kept the dance floor rocking all night,” Natasha

says.

She is full of advice for others in the throes of wedding preparations: “Enjoy the planning.

The day itself goes so quickly, but the planning and anticipation of seeing everything come

together should be part of the enjoyment. Make it a ‘wedding weekend’ rather than just a day,

as there are too many people to speak to in one eight-hour period,” she adds. “Also, you need

bridesmaids – what was I thinking?”

Amy and Jason Amy and Jason go way back. They knew each other distantly at

school, but their official meeting came at Bodmin Boxing Club four

years ago. “We were put together as sparring partners and every

week Jason would ask me when I was going to go out with him.

After much persuasion on his part, I gave him a chance. We began

dating and really hit it off!” Amy says.

After Jason’s romantic riverside proposal at Penpol Creek – complete

with a picnic, Amy’s favourite chocolates and Jason bending down on one

knee despite the muddy riverbed – planning commenced for their vintage

country wedding.

“I fell in love with peacock blues and cherry reds so they became the

chosen colours for our wedding,” Amy says. The pretty hues made for

glorious floral arrangements by Fleurtations, from the colour-pop bouquets

to the ethereal floral headdresses. Keen for their wedding to be awash with

unique details, many elements were handmade by the couple’s family and

friends, including the bunting, flower girls’ dresses, the original artwork for

the invites and hand-painted butterflies for the table names.

“I grew up in Lanivet and the church is very important to me. There is

nowhere else in the world I would have got married,” Amy says. Seeking

somewhere close to the church for their vintage reception, they decided on

the grade II listed War Memorial Hall just outside of Lanhydrock. “It was a

blank canvas which meant we were able to put our stamp on the wedding!”

Amy explains.

After the ceremony, the newly-weds headed to Lanhydrock and Respryn

with the wedding party and their beloved dogs for some photographs.

On their arrival at the reception, they were greeted by the Bodmin

Morris Dancers who danced them inside, setting the tone for the evening

celebrations where a disco and folk/gypsy band Biere De Luxe filled the

dance floor with their uplifting tunes. Caterer Tink Gaskell’s culinary

wizardry added to the day’s delights, from the delectable canapés to the

gastro buffet wedding breakfast.

“The whole day was magical, unique and totally us,” Amy reflects. “It was

a lovely handmade affair and turned out better than we could have wished

for!”

She has plenty of words of wisdom for brides-to-be: “Definitely make a

scrapbook and/or a Powerpoint presentation of all your wedding ideas.” She

adds, “It’s not about the venue you choose – it’s about the people you have

at your day. Making memories with my new husband and all my important

family and friends is the thing I will never forget.”

BE CREATIVE WITH FLOWERSMix it up: use an eclectic assortment of interesting

pots, vases, urns or glassware for table centrepieces.

Darling details: tie brooches, seashells, buttons or

little things that mean a lot to you into the bouquets.

Bloom room: use a mixture of flower garlands and

bunting to decorate your celebration space.

Drama queen: chandeliers wrapped in flowers

and suspended above the table make a stunning and

dramatic focal point.

Rural romance: daisy wreaths dotted around a

in a similar age group together. Always aim for 50/50

percent of existing and potential friends on each table.

Top tags: giving guests’ nametags with an interesting

fact about them is a great icebreaker.

Playful puzzles: creating a crossword puzzle about

you and your fiancé which each table has to complete

is a brilliant way to get guests chatting.

JAZZ UP GROUP PHOTOSTop props: use fun props such as balloons and hats to bring a playful feel to

your photos.

Word up: give your guests signs to hold bearing funny quotes.

Pretty pictures: use scenic backgrounds such as a bridge, beach or woodland.

The fun factor: dance, jump around and generally have fun for the camera.

Pose off: encourage your guests to be creative with their poses.
