President’s Letter Since my last newsletter, the Country has been hit by tragedy after tragedy and I know that you will all be thinking of those who have lost their lives and their loved ones.

Yet again the Country faces a period of uncertainty and consequently so does the legal profession, but this is now something we are all getting used to! The newly appointed Lord Chancellor once again does not have a legal background so watch this space. The EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into force in May 2018. The regulations require companies to adopt much stricter processes in dealing with client/customer data. There will be substantial fines and potentially criminal action for failing to comply with the regulations. CLS organised a workshop in Truro on 22nd June to detail the implications. A similar presentation was due to take place on 5th July in Launceston but has been cancelled due to lack of bookings. If you wish to attend a workshop in the Autumn, please contact Margot. There are numerous courses coming up in the next few months so please continue to support CLS by attending. Sam and Elliott, our Junior Lawyer reps, held their first social this month which was well attended. If you have any JLs at your firm please support them in being part of the future of the profession and CLS. Thank you to Sam and Elliott. Myself, Zoe and Margot represented CLS at the annual Presidents’ and Secretaries’ Conference at Chancery Lane in May. Unfortunately, we felt that the conference was directed towards the larger societies and it is therefore important that we maintain our membership of The Association of South West Law Societies to ensure a collective approach to important issues. Helen Davies has been a longstanding Council member of The Law Society and has worked very hard on behalf our members. Helen is due to stand down at the end of the summer. I would like to thank Helen on behalf of all at CLS for her efforts and she will be a hard act to follow! Finally, on behalf of Zoe, Margot and the committee I would like to wish you all a lovely summer break!

The Allen Knight Memorial Golf Trophy 2017 The annual golfing match between the local law societies of Cornwall, Plymouth and Devon & Somerset is to take place this year at Exeter Golf & Country Club on Thursday 14 September. Plymouth Law Society won last year’s match which took place at Tavistock Golf Club and by all accounts they are keen to successfully defend the Trophy. We therefore need a strong band of golfers from Cornwall to cross the Tamar and wrestle it back from them! If there is anyone out there who may be interested in playing this year, then please contact Andrew London (either by telephone on 01326 563045 or by email [email protected]) so that you can be included in the team. Andrew looks forward to hearing from you!

Have you ever thought you’d like to give something back to your local community? School governance is an area that has changed enormously over the past decade. More than ever, it requires people with professional skills able to take a strategic overview of an organisation that not only impacts directly on the futures of our children, but one that needs to react swiftly to ever-changing regulatory, inspection and political environments. Gone are the days when being a school governor was about having reserved seating for the school play. As increasing numbers of schools become academies, and as local authority influence and control wanes, school governors and academy directors make significant decisions. They can influence everything from personnel and safeguarding to budgets and premises – and, of course, must hold the educationalists to account for the standards attained and progress made by the children. “I really hope that law firms would consider school governance as an important area of focus for their efforts in terms of corporate social responsibility,” said Bex Couch, governance development officer at the education department in the Diocese of Truro. “School governors and academy directors are increasingly recruited according to their professional skills. All boards are encouraged to regularly review their skill-sets, and lawyers would frequently have plenty to offer”. “This is not about the schools getting a ‘legal freebie’. They should all have their own arrangements for obtaining legal advice where necessary, however, the skills used by experienced legal professionals would be hugely helpful on many occasions. A lawyer would have a unique perspective on many of the challenges faced by the modern school.” Many firms choose to give ‘governor time’ to employees or partners who take up such a role. “People frequently feel they get a lot back from governance roles. The improvements that well-led schools make can be tangible – you can make a difference to children’s education, and within a relatively short space of time that brings visible results,” said Bex. If you or your company is interested in finding out more about governance, please contact Bex on 01872 360042 or [email protected]

and finally... Thank you to those who have signed up for the forthcoming seminars. I realise your working time is precious and it isn’t always easy to find time to attend “face to face” seminars or courses but without the support of you, the CLS members, it may not be possible to continue with a training programme.

If anyone would like to contribute to the next edition (due out in the latter half of September), then please let me have the content by Monday 11 September 2017. I understand the weather is due to break over the coming days but hopefully we haven’t seen the last of the sun this summer!
