Test Your Knowledge A couple of weeks ago, I made an error in the Pastor’s Notes. I think when we make mistakes, it’s God’s way of keeping us humble. We make corrections and move on. The mistake I made was that I used the wrong word. I wrote that David was Saul’s son. I meant to say successor. Jesse was David’s father, not Saul. So I thought what we could do is have a little fun. There are many errors in the following excerpts from the biblical narrative. See if you can spot them.

After they were expelled from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Each of these two sons brought offerings to God. God accepted Cain’s offering of the fruit of the ground, but rejected Abel’s gift. In his pride, Cain killed Abel to show that he was the dominant son.

Moses was a great leader of the Jews, and often spoke to God on their behalf and relayed to them what God had said. Although Moses was God’s chosen one, God did not let Moses cross the Nile and enter into the promised land of Egypt.

Once the Israelites had entered the promised land, God encouraged them to intermarry with the local peoples in order to bring the Gospel to as many people as possible.

God said that King David was a man after His own heart. Under King David’s leadership, the city of Galilee became the center of the Jewish world. Even after David had gravely sinned and committed adultery with his cousin Bathsheba and had her husband deported, God forgave him. King David’s son Jeroboam was also a great king in Israel.

Matthew often quotes the prophet Jeremiah in his Gospel. Matthew wants to emphasize that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the coming Messiah. Also, a detailed account of the birth of the Messiah is given in the Old Testament book Hezekiah.

The Three Kings came to visit Jesus on the night He was born in a manger in Bethlehem. They brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. Myrrh was often used in ancient times as a cleansing ointment for newborn babies, which is why they brought it all the way from Russia.

Only in the Gospel of John do we find the parable of the Prodigal Son, which is mostly about the Golden Rule. The father in the parable shows favoritism to his older son because he always did good deeds for others.

Jesus chose His twelve disciples, each of whom were professional fishermen, to make them “fishers of men”. In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn about how the Apostles sold their fishing businesses and donated the proceeds to the Church.

In Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews, he says that it is by faith that Noah became the father of many nations, and that for us, without faith it is impossible to please God.

Finally, in the Book of Revelations, St. John of Patmos records a vision he received from God. In it, he saw seven angels who visit seven churches and tell them what they need to do. All of these prophecies refer to 21st century conditions which is why there are so many end-time predictions today.

Pon a prueba tus conocimientos

To all members of Notre Dame Parish

We have recently made a report to the members of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of San Antonio of clergy sexual abuse of minors from 1940 through the present. The following priests who have been accused of sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of San Antonio were assigned to minister in your parish: Cayetano Romero was assigned to your parish from 1950-1955. He died in 1978. Louis White was assigned to your parish from 1978-1981. He was laicized in 1989. The full report can be found on our webpage at archsa.org. I share this information with you with the hope that any members of our community affected by sexual abuse will feel encouraged to seek all needed pastoral support or counseling as part of their healing process. If we can be of assistance to you, or if you have questions or concerns in regard to these priests, please contact Mr. Steve Martinez, Director of the Office of Victim Assistance and Safe Environment at 210-734-7786 or 877-700-1888. I pledge my commitment to continue working to make every Catholic Church, school and institution a safe harbor for all of our children. Please join me in prayer as we reach out to any and all who may be victims of sexual abuse. Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, M.Sp.S

Arzobispo Gustavo García-Siller, M.Sp.S.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. New librarians Doug and Deborah Harris, gave me an article about Fulton Sheen by Joseph Pronechen. Here is the fourth installment: [Sheen said,] “The answer is: these are great and wonderful days in which to be alive. I thank God… that I can live in these days, because these are days of testing.” Since 1974 the testing pressure has increased. Sheen explained it was easy to be Christian in the three decades before his talk [in 1974]. “The atmosphere was Christian; morals were Christian; there was no great problem in adapting ourselves to a Christian society. But now, when everything is turned around, these are days when the masks have got to come off, and we reveal ourselves just as we really are.” “Today the current is against us. And today the mood of the world is, ‘Go with the world, go with the spirit.’ Listen, dead bodies float downstream. Only live bodies resist the current. And so the good Lord is testing us.” “And he is testing Western Christians with worldliness, and how many of us are falling?” Would Bishop Sheen be surprised on how far the decadence and corruption have piled up? He gives the example of the Israelites being tested by God in the desert. “That is what he is doing to us. We are showing what we really are now,” Sheen said. “St. John says in his Epistle: ‘They did not love us really from the beginning. That is why they left us.’ And so the souls that are falling away have just failed to meet the test. It is very much like the test that the Jews had.” The farsighted bishop highlighted how the majority of Israelites scouting the Promised Land told the people they couldn’t enter because the dwellers there were too strong. But “the majority is not always right!” Only Caleb and Joshua, “the minority report,” disagreed. They were right. Sheen warned “what we are going to have in the Church is a minority report: a minority report of sisters, a minority report of priests, a minority report of laity — not the minority that is aggressive and troublemaking, but the minority that like Caleb and Joshua, trusts in God. So we are tested just as the Jews were tested.” He went on, “not far after our time, and perhaps in the time of some, then will come the battles and the testing. Our Lord said, Satan would sift you as wheat. And we are being sifted as wheat. So we can all thank God that we live in these days. Really, it’s beautiful. Now we can say, ‘aye’ or ‘nay,’ and we can bear up under assault, criticism and ridicule, because this is the lot of the Christian in the

days of the spirit of the world. (Continued next week)
