A UNIQUE WORLD ECOSYSTEM

The cork oak forest, which is concentrated in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, is an ecosystem of unique characteristics. The soil of this region is ideal for the cultivation of this exceptional species, the cork oak. In this beautiful region, Amorim sets aside several thousand hectares for the cultivation and harvesting of cork, which it then channels to its industrial units.

Amorim Award recognises best forestry management practices

Corticeira Amorim has set up and exclusively funds a National Award to recognise best forestry management practices. This is a protocol established with 4 other entities: The National Forestry Authority (AFN); the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (ICNB), Quercus and the WWF, under the European Business & Biodiversity initiative.

Quercus Suber L, the scientific name of the cork oak, lives on average for around 200 years. It is one of Nature’s most extraordinary creations and the only species in the world that produces a bark with the unique properties of cork.In 2011 the cork oak was officially nominated as the National Tree by the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic.

THE CORK OAK, PORTUGAL'S NATIONAL TREE

1 3C o r k

1 4 C o r k

The removal of the cork oak bark is called stripping. This is the beginning of the industrial cycle of cork, which does not end with the final product reaching the market because cork's special qualities allow it to be 100% recycled and systematically returned to the market in an almost eternal cycle. The cork is stripped from the cork oak - an extremely delicate manual operation - when the tree reaches 25-30 years of age. It is then repeated every nine years, without the tree being damaged or killed in any of these operations.

AN EXTREMELY DELICATE OPERATION CORK STRIPPING

1 6 C o r k

After harvesting, the cork is stacked to rest for a long period for the raw material to stabilise, in the Amorim Group's industrial units.

Cork oak forests play an irreplaceable role in the conservation of the environment and fight against climate change due to their extraordinary capacity to retain CO2.Amorim is the world leader of the cork industry and undertakes its responsibility as the main investor in its development on a global scale, thus contributing to the battle for the environment. The carbon fixed by the cork oaks is stored in the cork and in all cork products.

FSC Certification

FSC certification of forests and products is a crucial component of the worldwide environmental protection strategy. Amorim was one of the pioneers and main promoters of this certification in Portugal and is proud of that role which has already been recognised by some of the most important world market operators.

AN IRREPLACEABLE ROLE IN CONSERVATION CORK AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Amorim has implemented a worldwide cork stopper collection and recycling programme. It has also conducted countless initiatives to raise awareness and provide training on product recycling. It opened the first cork stopper recycling industrial plant in 2009. It currently has three such recycling plants.

THE CORK STOPPER, AN ECOLOGICALLY UNBEATABLE STOPPER

The cork stoppers produced each year by Amorim are responsible for the reduction of 25,000 tonnes of CO2. If we take into account their plant nature and the property of being a material that is 100% recyclable and 100% reusable, cork stoppers will continue to perform their retention function far beyond their useful life, almost for eternity, making this product ecologically unbeatable. NATURAL CORK STOPPER

3 2 C o r k

Amorim corks have gained special status in their role of sealing the world's best champagnes and sparkling wines, owing to the intensive scientific and technological research to ensure they produce top physical, chemical and winemaking performances. Champagne cork stoppers, designed for wines that combine high pressure with delicateness, have evolved since the bygone days of D. Pérignon, finding their definitive form in the combination of an agglomerate cork body and two natural cork discs at one of the ends, the one in contact with the wine.Their excellent mechanical behaviour and ease of bottling are key advantages and the reasons for their selection by the most important winemakers in the world.
