Core Curriculum Tools in Banner

1. Determine if the student is core complete. Faculty and Advisors – Self-Service The easiest way to determine if a student is core complete or not is to view the Student’s test scores in self-service: From the Student Information Menu, select “View Test Scores.”

A student that is core complete by transfer will have a “Core Complete by TRANSFER” listed (the score reported is not relevant – only the listing itself). Transfer student NOT complete when they arrive here will have no “test” listed at all.

If a student is complete by transfer, there is no need to review a core evaluation. In fact, you are advised NOT to review a Banner core evaluation. Any core evaluation that may have been done was against the Sul Ross core requirements – which may be different from the transfer institution’s core requirement. In Degree Works, a student complete by transfer will simply show that core is complete – without listing individual courses used to satisfy the core. All such courses will either be used to satisfy degree and major requirements or be used to satisfy elective requirements. If the student is core complete at Sul Ross, the student will have a “Core Complete at SRSU” test listed (the score is not relevant – only the listing itself). Students that are not core complete will have no “test” listed at all.

For such students, both the Banner core evaluation and the Degree Works evaluation will list the courses used to satisfy core. The two evaluations may differ. If so, the Banner evaluation is “official”. Contact the Registrar to correct Degree Works.

Faculty and Advisors – Native Banner Log in to native Banner and enter SZAPGMS in the “Go To” field.

Enter the ID number of the student, then perform Next Block.

This is how a student complete by transfer will appear. Note that the completed date and “Other Institution” is populated but no courses are listed (no evaluation was performed).

This is how the transfer student with transferred core courses but core not complete appears on SZAPGMS:

If neither of the above options are available to you (student self-service or native Banner), contact Enrollment Services at ext. 8048 or 8049 for assistance. Do NOT advise a student on core until you know if the student is core complete or not.

Students - LoboOnLine Students may view their core information in LoboOnLine (self-service). From the Student tab, select “Student Records”.

Choose “View TSI, DROP Limit and Core Curriculum” from the Student Records menu.

For transfer students that have completed core at the transfer institution, the completion of core is noted. The coursework used to satisfy core is not listed because an official evaluation is not required and not advisable. (Since core curricula requirements may not match up, an evaluation of a transfer institution’s courses against our requirements wouldn’t necessarily show the student complete and would be misleading.)

In the next example, the core is not complete. Courses taken at transfer institutions that satisfied core are noted by institution. Note that although AGB 2302 is not a core course here, it satisfied core at TAMU – Commerce in the 080 area (Social and Behavioral Sciences). We must accept it here as well.

2. If the student is NOT complete, review the latest core evaluation. Banner Self-Service On the Student Information menu and select “Degree Evaluation”.

Select “Previous Evaluations.”

If one or more evaluations have been performed, you will see a list with the most recent evaluation at the top. Official evaluations are performed for current students at the end of each term, so dates will usually fall in the week after the end of the term. Choose the most recent evaluation.

At the top of the report, a summary is presented. Note that the catalog term is fall 2013 (which will match the student’s term in Banner for all official evaluations). In this example, the student has not met the requirements of the core in effect in fall 2013.

Scroll down the report to view details. This is how an area that has been met will appear.

This is how an area that has not been met will appear.

Let’s suppose that the student in the above example (with catalog term fall 2013) was considering transitioning to the “new” core. The Registrar’s Office can perform another evaluation as if the catalog term was fall 2014 (or any valid term thereafter) to see how the change would affect the core completion status. Once the evaluation was run, the results would be viewable as a previous evaluation. If you would like a “what-if” analysis performed, call the Registrar’s Office at ext. 8048 (Associate Registrar) or 8049 (Registrar).

If the student decides to transition to the “new” core as a result of the analysis, a catalog term of fall 2014 or later must be elected using the change of information form.

Degree Works (students on a fall 2015 catalog or later) From the Sul Ross homepage, select “mySRSU” and log in with your ID (the first part of your @sulross.edu e-mail address) and your e-mail password.

Choose the My Degree Plan link.

Students: You will be taken directly to YOUR degree plan and evaluation. Advisors: Type in the student A number and ‘enter’.

The student’s degree plan and evaluation will be displayed. The Texas Core Curriculum requirement appears just below the degree requirements. Notice that course applied are listed. Courses still needed are identified.

If you still have questions about the applicability of the core curriculum, please contact the Registrar at (432) 837-8049 or 8048.
