Corbis Search Tips and Keyword Guide
Searching on Corbisimages.com
Helping you find the perfect images for your project is our priority. That’s why corbisimages.com comes with several refinement tools to make your search experience faster and easier.

Refine search
To focus an existing search, use the “Refine search” option on the left side of the screen.
You can select the image category and type of license (rights managed or royalty-free) you want, along with other specific criteria. Check off the relevant boxes and click “Go.”
Are you looking for images without people in them? Do you need to find images with model releases? Simply check off the relevant boxes and click “Go.”
Getting started
Type a keyword into the “Search images” box at the top of the home page, click “Go” and you could receive hundreds or even thousands of results. The following refinement tools will help avoid having to sift through a large number of images.

Advanced search
Sorting your results
If you’re looking for images from a particular photographer, date, location, provider, or angle, choose “Advanced search.” This will allow you to specify the image orientation and the number of people in a photograph. Select the options that apply and click “Go.”
Your results are listed in order of relevance to your keywords. You can also sort by photograph or upload date. This allows you to easily find images of the same model or location.
Click “Sort by best match” in the top right corner of the search results page and select one of the options from the drop-down menu.

Search tips
Image content search tips
You can also refine your search by adding more keywords to the search bar.
– or NOT eliminates terms (e.g. mountain NOT trees).
OR brings up more varied results (e.g. lake or stream).
* finds variations of the same word or date (e.g. travel* brings up travel, traveling,
and traveler, and 198* brings up images from the 1980s).
“ ” searches for specific phrases (e.g. “wedding dress”).
NOBODY brings up images without people (e.g. beach NOBODY).
CONCEPTS returns more abstract images, which is particularly useful when
paired with an idea.
Image format search tips
COPY SPACE returns images with space for text.
CUT-OUT finds images that are cut out from their backgrounds.
CLOSE-UP brings up images shot at close range.
EYE CONTACT finds models looking directly into the camera.
FULL-LENGTH returns full-length images of people.
HEAD SHOTS brings up head and shoulder portraits.
PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE returns images that give the impression the viewer
is an active participant in the image.
VANISHING POINT finds images of empty roads that vanish into the horizon, or
contain a point in the distance at which parallel lines appear to converge.
VIEW brings up a range of perspective options so that you can select the angle of
the shot.

Targeted search results
By combining keywords, you can focus your search to bring up the images most relevant to your project.Here are some examples:

Using Corbis’ keywordsOnce you have found an image you like, you can click on it to see the image details. Clicking on the “Corbis keywords” tab will give you a list of preselected keywords related to the image. Select the ones that best match your search criteria and click “Search now” to find more images that share these keywords.
IconsEach image in your search results will have a series of icons underneath it:
This lets you bring up images from the same photo shoot, featuring the same models or locations.
This brings up images available on the same CD.
Click this to add the image to your lightbox.
Choose this to calculate the price of the image, depending on the type of use and size you require.
This adds the image to your shopping basket.

If you’re looking for inspiration, try browsing the latest slideshows and galleries. To browse content in the creative and editorial collections, select a category from the drop-down menus next to “Advanced Search.” Choosing creative allows you to select rights-managed or royalty-free photography and illustration. You can also access the large collection of royalty-free CDs. Choosing editorial will allow you to browse the documentary, fine art, archival, current events, entertainment, or Outline™ categories.

Managing your lightbox
You must be signed in to your corbisimages.com account to work with lightboxes. Your lightbox is located in the display window to the left of your search results. To work with the images in your lightbox, click “My lightboxes” in the top right corner of the screen and select the lightbox you want. You’ll see your lightbox, along with additional features located in a bar along the top.
Create new lightbox
To create another lightbox for a new theme, click “Create new lightbox,” type in a name for your new lightbox, and save it.
Move lightbox
To make a lightbox a subfolder of another lightbox, click “Move lightbox,” select the lightbox you want to move the other one into, and click “Move lightbox” again.
Copy/Move items
To copy or move individual images between lightboxes, choose “Copy/Move items” and select the content you want to move. Then click “Move” or “Copy.”
Use this feature to print your lightbox as a contact sheet. Simply choose it and follow the instructions for your printer.
To share your lightbox, click “E-mail” and write a message to the recipient. Your message will be sent along with a link to the lightbox.
Transfer
You can also add a copy of your lightbox to another Corbis user’s account so that the recipient can edit it without affecting your version. Select “Transfer” and type in the user’s name.
