    Message from the Director

What a whirlwind of change! Just over 5 year ago I was asked

by Board Member Steve Quaid if I wanted to work as a

bookkeeper at Corbin Senior Activity Center. Little did I know

that Corbin would become family in so many ways. This

wonderful community of seniors worked their way into my

heart, and I cannot imagine working anywhere else. Now as I

write as the new Executive Director, I just want to say thank

you for all the kind word’s and encouragement. I am truly

    humbled.

Thank you, to all the people who have stepped up and donated items to our auction on October

5th. Thanks to the generosity of our members and the area community I am confident that we

will have another successful auction. If you want to be part of the success, we have a few seats

left. This year we have contracted with Nectar Catering for our dinner. You will be served

Caesar salad, seared chicken breast with mushroom marsala, mashed potatoes, season

vegetables, and rolls. We again are serving Nothing Bundt cakes for dessert. Don’t forget Paula

Davis will be serving up her appetizers, Paul and Judy serving free wine, and a couple of hundred

items you get to bid on. It is always an evening to remember.

As always, my door is open. I am always to willing to help in anyway I can. However, I know I

cannot do it all and want to encourage you to ask our new office staff for help. Jane Mills is our

new bookkeeper/room rental coordinator and Jessica Bockelie is our new newsletter/event

coordinator. I consider Corbin blessed to have these two great ladies join our team in the office.

I am sure that , in true Corbin fashion our community will embrace them into the family!

I finish with saying thank you to all who put up with the paint smell the last couple of weeks. I

am finally finished… for now! Come in and take a look.

Annual Open Enrollment is just around the corner—OCTOBER 15th to DECEMBER 7th—so it’s time for some important reminders and news about a group of doctors who make

house calls! Most importantly, remember to pay attention to the Annu-al Notice of Change letter you got in the mail. Make sure you know about and understand how any changes in your Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan will affect your healthcare next year. You don’t want any surprises.

Now, I’m also very excited to tell you about Heal…a group of doctors who make House Calls. Aetna has teamed up with Heal to bring “back to the future” healthcare to Spokane County in 2020. Enroll in an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan and choose Heal as your primary doctor and the doctor will come to you . A board-certified doctor and a medical assistant will come to your door-usually within two hours of calling for an appointment—8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Imagine not having to wait three to four weeks for an appointment or bundling up to shovel the driveway so you can get to your doctor—in the dead of Winter! Why not have your doctor come to you?The Heal team travels with state-of-the-art technology and performs 99% of the same tests a doctor does in the office--and at $0 co-pay. Ex-cept for emergency calls, your designated Heal doctor sees you for all scheduled appointments. It’ so convenient.Other Heal Benefits Include: • Point of care tests, prescriptions and lab draws—all in the privacy of

your own home. • No extra costs, wasted ER trips, germy waits in the Urgent Care. • A team to coordinate your care and refer you to specialists-assist

with supplies and equipment—chronic disease management—order transfer of medical records.

Finally, if you have a United Healthcare Medicare Advantage plan and a Columbia Medical Associates doctor, you have a decision to make; ei-ther find a new doctor or enroll in a Kaiser-Permanente Medicare Ad-vantage plan. And of course, if you have any questions about Medicare, changing plans and doctors, or curious about Heal—please call me, Nancy Maupin at 981-8239. I’m here to help.

    WII BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Eight WII bowlers from Corbin competed in the September

13, 2019 All City Wii Bowling Tournament that was held at

the Spokane Valley Baptist Church on McDonald. There

were approximately 124 Wii bowlers from across the city

with 10 teams participating. Each bowler bowls one

game. We watched a lady bowl a 300 perfect game while

we were waiting for lunch. But we hung in there and did the best we could. We were short a few bow-

lers after Bonnie fell and was in the hospital instead of with us. We were also missing Ira and Ron who

were both not well. After a zucchini casserole lunch and our best try, we came home with the sixth -

place trophy with a five-person average of 227. Carril Cramer was our best bowler of the day with 256.

Mary Kay Bryan bowled a 248, Phoebe Daniels bowled 247 and Theresa Topp bowled a nice 202. Barba-

ra Ann Bonner bowled a 183. The other Corbin bowlers playing today were Betty Rash and Paul Ruch

and Keith Bagge. Its great having Keith back with us. The trophy we won will be in the multipurpose

    room for exhibit.

The next all-city tournament will be held on October 11th at the same place. Anyone interested in

playing in the tournament please, let Mary Kay Bryan know.

  • Corbin has always benefitted from the rich experiences of our members. For the

past 3 years, our Thrifty Boutique has been blessed by the entrepreneurial spirit

of Joan Higgins. Joan married her high school sweetheart in Montana where

they then began to set up their first business on a farm. Together, they provid-

ed french fries and hash browns for over 60 restaurants throughout Montana.

After decades of living the successful farm life, they sold the farm and then

opened up a clothing store. The next several years would see a successful ven-

ture in the restaurant industry as well as opening up a large antique and second

hand store. However, in 2011 Joan and her husband of 57 years wanted to be

closer to the grandchildren. They moved to Spokane where she eventually

found her way to Corbin in 2016. Since joining Corbin, Joan has served in the

boutique where her great depth of experience has been a blessing. In her spare

time, Joan loves playing tennis and hits the tennis courts several times a week.

She enjoys spending time with her 2 children, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great

grandchildren. If you drop by the boutique on Tuesdays you’ll get to see Joan in

action. Thank you Joan for all you do for Corbin.

Six birthdays were celebrated on September 6 this year! Our birthday friends are Eric Hietala, Nancy Gilbert, Phoebe Daniels, Belva Williams, Jeanne Walser. The lovely cake and gift certificate were provided by Fairwood Retirement Vil-lage & Assisted Living. The lunch was delicious, with a great variety of food. All guests celebrating a birthday, will be entered to win the $20.00 gift certificate. If it is your birthday month, please let the volunteers at the reception desk know before October 10th.

The next Birthday Pot Luck is Oct. 11, 2019. (Due to Auction activities) Bring a dish, enjoy the company and celebrate, even if it’s not your birthday. The lunches are a lot of fun and you may even win a prize.
